Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade after the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board decision, it became clear to students, parents, and community members alike that court cases were insufficient in the pursuit of educational justice. This book explores what made it difficult for educational equality to become obtainable after the Brown decision as well as the resilience and activism of younger Black students who sought to enforce equality—even when the government could not. The 1954 ruling enabled public schools to reach a degree of desegregation but did not enable them to become “the learning institutions they could have become” due to the actions of white officials and local white communities who construed Black youth’s articulation of educational redress as “adversarial” instead of as a “communal enterprise.” Importantly, Audacious Agitation does not portray Black youth as objects of study but rather highlights their powerful agency in increasing opportunity for themselves through the educational system.

Book German Communism Workers Protest and Labor Unions

Download or read book German Communism Workers Protest and Labor Unions written by Larry Peterson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-02-28 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the rise of the German Communist Party in the crucial period between the Kapp Putsch and the stabilization of the Weimar Republic. Based on extensive archival research, its reconstruction of Communist participation in union and protest movements in the key industrial region of Rhineland-Westphalia offers the first detailed social analysis of Communist support, organization and political strategy in German labor unions. By viewing German Communism against the backdrop of industrial structures and economic conditions, this study illuminates the deeper divisions in the German workers' movement that contributed to the tragedy of the Weimar Republic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "honorable men" who ruled the Old South had a language all their own, one comprised of some obviously outlandish features yet revealing much about the lives of masters and the nature of slavery. As Kenneth Greenberg skillfully demonstrates, the language of honor embraced a complex system of phrases, gestures, and behaviors that centered on deep-rooted values--asserting authority and maintaining respect (deserved or not).

Book Cuban Insurrection 1952 1959

Download or read book Cuban Insurrection 1952 1959 written by Ramon L. Bonachea and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cuban Insurrection is an in-depth study of the first stage of the Cuban Revolution, the years from 1952 to 1959. The volume depicts the origins of the conflict, details the middle years, and ends with Fidel Castro's victorious arrival In Havana on January 8, 1959. Based on a wealth of hitherto unpublished original material, including confidential military reports, letters from various leaders of the insurrection and data gathered from interviews held In Cuba and abroad, the book Is a descriptive historical analysis of the struggle against military dictator Fulgencio Batista. The authors challenge the traditional premise that Cuba's insurrection began in the rural areas and only later expanded into urban areas. Instead they argue that the insurrectionary struggle was based upon combined urban-rural guerrilla warfare against the regular army. Basically, The Cuban Insurrection treats two major movements involved in the struggle—The Directorio Revolucionario and the M-26-7—and examines the growth, ideology, conflicts, and military strategies of their respective rural and urban organizations. The book includes a detailed analysis of combat, strikes, uprisings, and expeditions. Original maps and charts illustrate battles, maneuvers, and guerrilla political structures.

Book A Colonial Economy in Crisis

Download or read book A Colonial Economy in Crisis written by Ian Brown and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book challenges the orthodox argument that rural populations which abandoned self-sufficiency to become single commodity producers, and were supposedly very vulnerable to the commodity price collapse of the 1930s Depression, did not suffer as much as has been supposed. It shows how the effects of the depression were complicated, varying between regions, between different kinds of economic actors, and over time, and shows how the 'victims' of the depression were not passive, working imaginatively to mitigate their circumstances.
