Book UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS

Download or read book UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS written by D. C. Sachs and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project 1.7 of Operation TEAPOT was concerned with the measurement of surface and subsurface effects of an underground explosion of a 1.2-kt nuclear burst (Shot 7). The measurements included free-field earth and airblast effects, as well as loading on underground structural devices. This report deals with the presentation and analysis of the free-field data only; the structural data have been transmitted to the appropriate agencies for their analysis. From the 76 channels installed on TEAPOT Shot 7, 75 usable records were obtained. The free-field quantities measured include air-blast pressure, earth acceleration, earth stress and strain, and permanent earth displacement. The results are discussed by phenomenon and, in each case, the TEAPOT data are compared with pretest predictions. Also, where data are available, comparisons are made with previous underground nuclear test results. Some aspects of seismology and soil mechanics as applied to underground explosion phenomena are presented and, finally, the most pertinent high explosives results from subsequent tests conducted at the TEAPOT location are summarized. Download or read book Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring Field Performance written by John Dunnicliff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1993-10-06 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book on the subject written by a practitioner forpractitioners. Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring FieldPerformance Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring FieldPerformance goes far beyond a mere summary of the technicalliterature and manufacturers’ brochures: it guides readersthrough the entire geotechnical instrumentation process, showingthem when to monitor safety and performance, and how to do it well. This comprehensive guide: * Describes the critical steps of planning monitoring programsusing geotechnical instrumentation, including what benefits can beachieved and how construction specifications should bewritten * Describes and evaluates monitoring methods and recommendsinstruments for monitoring groundwater pressure, deformations, total stress in soil, stress change in rock, temperature, and loadand strain in structural members * Offers detailed practical guidelines on instrument calibrations, installation and maintenance, and on the collection, processing, and interpretation of instrumentation data * Describes the role of geotechnical instrumentation during theconstruction and operation phases of civil engineering projects, including braced excavations, embankments on soft ground, embankment dams, excavated and natural slopes, undergroundexcavations, driving piles, and drilled shafts * Provides guidelines throughout the book on the best practices

Book Development of Airblast and Thermal Radiation Instrumentation

Download or read book Development of Airblast and Thermal Radiation Instrumentation written by H. R. Kratz and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part of a continuing effort to develop instrumentation for use in underground nuclear tests. In particular, the development of instrumentation to measure airblast and thermal radiation is described. The initial development of an instrumented sphere to measure dynamic pressure in the supersonic flow behind a blast front was completed. Experiments are described that show that it is feasible to use a bar gauge to measure pressure on a surface parallel to the axis of the bar gauge by using a piston and fluid coupling combination. Work is described on sputtering a thin (2 micron) insulating film of sapphire onto the surface of a copper disc. Such films are required in a proposed thermal radiation gauge to measure the total radiation flux in an underground nuclear explosion. Measurements of pressure in the HE driver chamber on the DABS S-2 Test are also described. (Author).

Book The Development of Reciprocity Procedures for Utilizing Data from Underground Explosion Tests

Download or read book The Development of Reciprocity Procedures for Utilizing Data from Underground Explosion Tests written by Y. C. Fung and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure for predicting underground cavity motions resulting from surface air-blast loading is developed on the basis of a dynamic-reciprocity principle for a nonhomogeneous, anisotropic, linear, viscoelastic half space. A computer program for evaluating the integral equations for this medium is presented. Experimental measurements from the RAINIER Event of Operation PLUMBBOB are used to postulate cavity motions arising from a surface burst at the RAINIER site. The effects of variations in the cavity pressure signature, number of measured ground motions, and instrumentation errors are examined. Recommendations are made for experimental programs to obtain needed additional data, and, in general, to ascertain the applicability of the reciprocity to soils.
