Book Strategies Used to Recruit and Retain Band Students in Urban Schools

Download or read book Strategies Used to Recruit and Retain Band Students in Urban Schools written by Jenna Lake and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this multiple case study research was to examine recruitment and retention strategies used by successful urban school band directors. Participants were four urban school band directors and two urban school administrators. The directors were purposely selected based upon having successful and well-known band programs in schools that exhibited characteristics common to urban schools, including (a) a large percentage of low-SES students, (b) low, mean standardized test scores for students, (c) limited parental involvement in the band program, and (d) constrained budgets to support the band program. A survey and interviews were used to collect data on the teachers, their programs, and their administrators. Interview questions were developed based upon a review of literature and research questions regarding strategies used to recruit and retain students within urban school band programs. Using a semi-structured format, directors were interviewed to learn about their background in music, education, and current teaching situation. Two administrators were also interviewed regarding their perceptions of the recruitment and retention of students in the band programs in their school. Each band director participant described similar approaches to recruitment and retention, utilizing techniques such as demonstration concerts, informational handouts, testing of students on instruments, and holding a recruitment night for parents. They also noted the importance of administrative and parental support.

Book Recruiting and Retaining Non traditional Secondary Music Students Through Modern Band

Download or read book Recruiting and Retaining Non traditional Secondary Music Students Through Modern Band written by Luke P. Besong and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the numerous research studies promoting popular music education, many school districts need to implement an ensemble that teaches popular music. On average, only 24 percent of high school students participate in an ensemble throughout their high school careers, and music educators are trying to address this through modern bands. This qualitative, postpositivist, existential-phenomenological study identifies how the implication of modern bands can increase and retain music enrollment in secondary schools and analyzes the effects on other traditional instrumental and vocal ensemble enrollments. This study examined secondary music directors’ perceptions of the impact of modern bands on traditional ensembles. To ascertain how modern bands can help increase enrollment and learn the effect on traditional ensembles, music educators with modern band programs from across the United States provided their perspectives through a qualitative survey. Additionally, music teachers were encouraged to discuss their views on how modern band affects traditional ensembles. The results of this study show that popular music may help increase enrollment in music programs without adversely impacting traditional ensembles. This research study will help music educators and district administrators understand the leverage modern band must increase music ensemble enrollment and its relationship with traditional ensembles. In addition, this research study could encourage more school districts to adopt popular music education to reach students that may have otherwise eluded the music program.

Book A Plan for Recruiting and Retaining Instrumental Musicians in an Urban Middle School Band Program

Download or read book A Plan for Recruiting and Retaining Instrumental Musicians in an Urban Middle School Band Program written by Cameron M. Watkins and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to formulate a plan for recruiting students into a beginning level band program and retaining instrumental students throughout the middle school grade levels. Instrumental music educators need to have a recruitment plan for enticing students into the band program as well as a plan to retain those students. Through the development of a thorough plan that details specific approaches and methods, music educators are able to recruit students into the instrumental program as well as retain students through the higher levels of said program. Plans based on experiences from existing programs and research may allow educators to identify students who are potentially interested in the instrumental programs, providing strategies to target all groups of students to increase participation. Teachers will benefit, and consequently better develop an ideal instrumental program, through the implementation and improvement of their recruitment and retention plan. The developed plan identified specific activities for each month and included such things as working with teachers and administrators in the elementary school, planned interactions between middle school director and elementary school students, community involvement and performance opportunities. With the implementation of a well-developed plan, music educators develop and maintain a successful comprehensive program for students to grow, develop, and foster musicianship.

Book Recruitment and Retention Strategies for the Secondary Instrumental Music Program

Download or read book Recruitment and Retention Strategies for the Secondary Instrumental Music Program written by Stefanie Buscher and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project explored research and pedagogical literature related to the recruitment and retention of students involved in school music ensembles at the secondary level. Additionally, literature regarding advocacy for school instrumental programs was reviewed. Although music courses serve an important purpose in a well-rounded education and should be made easily available to all students, there are cases in which policymakers or administrators do not prioritize the need for music education. To facilitate strong student participation in school music programs, the literature points to the benefits of music educators implementing a year round recruitment, retention, and advocacy plan. As part of this capstone project, a twelve-month plan for recruitment, retention, and advocacy was created, grounded in the research and pedagogical literature in music education. The plan outlines strategies such as frequent contact with new recruits and their parents, positive student-teacher relationships with current students, and providing culturally relevant performances that meet the community's expectations. All of the findings are applicable to strategically improving the quality and quantity of the band program in the Valley Park, Missouri school district.

Book SEL and Community Engagement Strategies for the Recruitment and Retention of Suburdan Middle School Band Students

Download or read book SEL and Community Engagement Strategies for the Recruitment and Retention of Suburdan Middle School Band Students written by Gina Vingara and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has not yet found a correlation between community engagement and social-emotional learning (SEL) in a manner that benefits the recruitment and retention of suburban middle school band students. Teachers who create community engagement initiatives can boost the number of student recruits as the program becomes more widely recognized as a valuable asset of the school. This explanatory sequential mixed methods design study examined strategies regarding community engagement and SEL for recruiting and retaining middle school instrumental music education students. Perspectives on community engagement and SEL benefiting recruitment and retention of middle school band students emerged. Research revealed a connection between community engagement and social-emotional learning regarding middle school band recruitment and retention strategies. The researcher surveyed sixty-four suburban middle school band teachers regarding their perceptions of community engagement and SEL and their effects on recruitment and retention in their programs. The researcher interviewed four suburban middle school band teachers to gather their experiences and identify strategies in this area. This research can further advance middle school band teachers' approaches to recruiting and retaining students. Based on the findings of this research, researchers can conduct similar studies on recruitment and retention that embrace social-emotional learning competencies and community engagement initiatives for other types of music and elective courses.

Download or read book Urban Music Education written by Kate Fitzpatrick-Harnish and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevailing discourse surrounding urban music education suggests the deficit-laden notion that urban school settings are "less than," rather than "different than," their counterparts. Through the lens of contextually-specific teaching, this book provides a counternarrative on urban music education that encourages urban music teachers to focus on the strengths of their students as their primary resource. Through a combination of research-based strategies and practical suggestions from the author's own experience teaching music in urban settings, the book highlights important issues for teachers to consider, such as culturally relevant pedagogy, the "opportunity gap," race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, musical content, curricular change, music program development, student motivation, and strategies for finding inspiration and support. Throughout the book, the stories of five highly successful urban music teachers are highlighted, providing practical, real-world advice for music teachers across the domains of general, choral, band, and string music teaching. Recognizing that the term "urban" can encompass a wide variety of different school and community settings, this book challenges all teachers who work in under-served and under-resourced settings to take a critical look at their own music classroom and work to tailor their pedagogy to meet the particular needs of their students.

Book Curriculum Development for Beginning Band

Download or read book Curriculum Development for Beginning Band written by Thomas Langford and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite efforts in many schools to offer quality music education to all students, issues still prevent many minority students from participating in band programs. There are important and unique implications for minority students and students who live in poverty and their ability or desire to participate in a band program. Developing curriculum and teaching strategies to reach minority students and students living in poverty is one way to bridge the educational gap and provide an avenue for students to make a better way for themselves. The study examined existing literature to determine factors attracting or retracting this student population from band program participation. In the research, the obstacles found were financial constraints, family priority, and academics. The socioeconomic factor plays a significant role in students joining or staying in a band program. This qualitative historical study examined past patterns to understand the band curriculum's role in recruiting and retaining these students. With an understanding of the role of curriculum in the past, this study offers an outline of a curriculum approach to attract and retain impoverished minority students. The curriculum design followed the ADDIE method, including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research found that the curriculum choices should be culturally relevant, repertoire selected by students, and have varying genres.

Book Recruitment and Retention

Download or read book Recruitment and Retention written by Julianna Ellen Frost and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music educators at the secondary level are faced with many challenges when trying to recruit students for instrumental or choral programs. Recent studies have looked at recruitment challenges including socioeconomic issues, parental involvement, intellectual competency, music aptitude and extra-curricular activities. Most students' music career does not start when they enroll in beginning band or choral ensembles, as they may have been exposed to music classes as early as kindergarten. General music teachers have the task of introducing students to singing, playing a variety of instruments and creating compositions. With this early exposure to music and the methods used by the general music teacher, students can begin to create their own music preferences, which may influence their choice of ensembles at the secondary level. This thesis looks at whether the methods of the general music teacher and typical activities associated with these methods are related to the numbers of students who choose band, choir or orchestra as the secondary level.
