Download or read book Social Communication written by Klaus Fiedler and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the fascinating topic of social communication - fascinating because communication is ubiquitous, in that one cannot not communicate. And yet, the art of effective communication can be extremely demanding and elusive, because a tricky trade-off problem has to be solved. For communication to be successful, it must be at once informative - somehow indicating an intended direction of thought or action - as well as subtle - somehow concealing intentions and instrumental goals. Failure to meet the former criterion renders communication uncontrolled and haphazard; failure to meet the latter raises suspicion and reactance. The chapters in this volume focus on the tools and repertoires evolved by social communication in order to deal with this demanding trade-off. They represent prominent paradigms of current research at the interface of communication and social psychology, presented by leading scholars who have played crucial roles in the development of those paradigms. The sixteen chapters are grouped into four major sections: communication within and between groups and cultures; strategic communication; social communication, affect, and behaviour regulation; and social communication and adaptive behaviour regulation. Individual chapters are devoted to such intriguing topics as stereotypes and intergroup affairs, language and culture, deception and lie detection, persuasion, discussions in groups, logic of conversation, nonverbal cues, conversational implicatures, the impact of conversation situations and social distance, and the evolution of verbal communication. The volume is framed by an introduction and an epilog. Social Communication is essential reading for senior undergraduates, graduates, and researchers working in the field of social communication, language and social psychology, and related areas in social science such as communication science, linguistics, and gender studies.

Download or read book Communication in a Civil Society written by Shelley D. Lane and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the concept of “civility” as the major theme, this fully updated second edition offers a unique and alternative way to teach and learn about communication. The book brings together discrete areas that explore the fundamentals of communication and intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and public speaking. Every chapter includes theories, concepts, and examples that allow students to use civil and ethical communication skills in their personal relationships, in collaboration with colleagues, and in giving public speeches and professional presentations. This new edition highlights advances in and concepts related to mediated and technology-based communication, such as chatbots, technostress, and dating apps, and shows how students can engage in civil face-to-face and mediated interaction. Additionally, each chapter includes a real-world incident that students are asked to analyze in terms of specific chapter information and skills related to civility. Communication in a Civil Society is an ideal textbook for Introduction to Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Public Speaking courses. Materials for instructors including PowerPoint slides, a test bank, and an instructor’s manual, are available at www.routledge.com/9781032513263.
