Book Laboratories in Mathematical Experimentation

Download or read book Laboratories in Mathematical Experimentation written by Mount Holyoke College and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text is composed of a set of sixteen laboratory investigations which allow the student to explore rich and diverse ideas and concepts in mathematics. The approach is hands-on, experimental, an approach that is very much in the spirit of modern pedagogy. The course is typically offered in one semester, at the sophomore (second year) level of college. It requires completion of one year of calculus. The course provides a transition to the study of higher, abstract mathematics. The text is written independent of any software. Supplements will be available on the projects' web site.

This book was released on 1905 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose with which this book has been written is sufficiently indicated by its title. I have selected a number of the 'classical' experiments of Experimental Psychology, and have tried to present them in such a way that their performance shall have a real disciplinary value for the undergraduate student. Within this general purpose, my aim has been two-fold. I have sought to show, in the first place, that psychology is above the laboratory: that we employ our instruments of precision not for their own sake, but solely because they help us to a refined and more accurate introspection. And secondly, just as in my Outline of Psychology and Primer of Psychology I gave the results of experimentation a prominent place in the psychological system, so here I have treated the selected experiments not as separate exercises, but as points of departure for systematic discussion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you interested in using argument-driven inquiry for middle school lab instruction but just aren’t sure how to do it? Argument-Driven Inquiry in Physical Science will provide you with both the information and instructional materials you need to start using this method right away. The book is a one-stop source of expertise, advice, and investigations to help physical science students work the way scientists do. The book is divided into two basic parts: 1. An introduction to the stages of argument-driven inquiry—from question identification, data analysis, and argument development and evaluation to double-blind peer review and report revision. 2. A well-organized series of 22 field-tested labs designed to be much more authentic for instruction than traditional laboratory activities. The labs cover four core ideas in physical science: matter, motion and forces, energy, and waves. Students dig into important content and learn scientific practices as they figure out everything from how thermal energy works to what could make an action figure jump higher. The authors are veteran teachers who know your time constraints, so they designed the book with easy-to-use reproducible student pages, teacher notes, and checkout questions. The labs also support today’s standards and will help your students learn the core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and scientific practices found in the Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, the authors offer ways for students to develop the disciplinary skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Many of today’s middle school teachers—like you—want to find new ways to engage students in scientific practices and help students learn more from lab activities. Argument-Driven Inquiry in Physical Science does all of this while also giving students the chance to practice reading, writing, speaking, and using math in the context of science.

Book Laboratory Experiments in Physics for Modern Astronomy

Download or read book Laboratory Experiments in Physics for Modern Astronomy written by Leslie M. Golden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents experiments which will teach physics relevant to astronomy. The astronomer, as instructor, frequently faces this need when his college or university has no astronomy department and any astronomy course is taught in the physics department. The physicist, as instructor, will find this intellectually appealing when faced with teaching an introductory astronomy course. From these experiments, the student will acquire important analytical tools, learn physics appropriate to astronomy, and experience instrument calibration and the direct gathering and analysis of data. Experiments that can be performed in one laboratory session as well as semester-long observation projects are included.

Book excerpt: Ideal for use with any introductory physics text, Loyd's PHYSICS LABORATORY MANUAL is suitable for either calculus- or algebra/trigonometry-based physics courses. Designed to help students develop their intuitive abilities in physics, the third edition has been updated to take advantage of modern equipment realities and to incorporate the latest in physics education research. In each lab, author David Loyd emphasizes conceptual understanding and includes a thorough discussion of physical theory to help students see the connection between the lab and the lecture. Each lab includes a set of pre-lab exercises, and many labs give students hands-on experience with statistical analysis. Equipment requirements are kept at a minimum to allow for maximum flexibility and to make the most of pre-existing lab equipment. For instructors interested in using some of Loyd's experiments, a customized lab manual is another option available through the Cengage Learning Custom Solutions program. Now, you can select specific experiments from Loyd's PHYSICS LABORATORY MANUAL, include your own original lab experiments, and create one affordable bound book.
