Download or read book The Ordeal of Thomas Barton written by James P. Myers and published by Lehigh University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the career of Rev. Thomas Barton. Barton's ministry illuminates life on Pennsylvania's pre-Revolutionary frontier. As missionary for the church of England, Barton championed the interests of the Anglican church and the proprietary of William Penn's children in a turbulent borderland best by both threats from the French and their Native American allies and challenges to English authority from a largely Scots-Irish Presbyterian population. Ultimately, his hopes were destroyed when revolution swept him to a life of loss in New York City, where he died. This study examines the tragic life of a mid-level Anglo-Irish placeman who sought to expand his opportunities in pre-Revolutionary Pennsylvania.--Dust jacket.

Download or read book The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States written by Charles Colcock Jones and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Charles Colcock Jones's 'The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States', the author explores the importance of religious education for African Americans during the antebellum period. Jones delves into the impact of Christianity on the enslaved population, discussing how religious teachings were used to control and manipulate them. Written in a persuasive and informative style, the book sheds light on the complex relationship between religion, race, and power in American society. Jones also includes firsthand accounts and biblical references to support his arguments, making this work a valuable contribution to the study of African American history and religious practices in the United States. In addition, Jones's detailed analysis of the cultural and social factors influencing the religious education of African Americans provides readers with a deeper understanding of the complexities of race relations in early America. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the intersection of religion, race, and power dynamics in American history.

Download or read book Roland Allen written by Steven Richard Rutt and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roland Allen (1868-1947) is remembered as one of the foremost missionaries of the last century. Throughout his life, Allen travelled the world, following his vocation and building his missionary methods centred on a theology of indigenisation. From his early days as a Chaplain in China (during which Allen was forced to flee to the British Legation in Beijing), through to his continued mission to India, Canada and South Africa, he developed as man, missionary and theologian. The first of two volumes, Roland Allen: A Missionary Life is an intellectual biography which explores the people and ideas that influenced Allen while tracing the ways in which his missionary ecclesiology evolved during his life. Through extensive examination of unpublished archival papers, including lesser known letters and sermons, Steven Richard Rutt has uncovered the growth of a forthright, morally indefatigable churchman, who was also a loving family man with close and long-running friendships. Rutt unpacks Allen's Church-centred missionary ecclesiology and 'missiology of indigenisation', which were based on Allen's knowledge, gained from experience. Roland Allen: A Missionary Life and Roland Allen: A Theology of Mission explore the thought of a Christian whose writings provided farsighted clarity on global Christian missionary work that is still relevant today.
