Book Instructions for the Visitors and the Enchiridion

Download or read book Instructions for the Visitors and the Enchiridion written by Phillip Melanchthon and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume III in the Complete Works of Philipp Melanchthon. This new American English translation of Luther's 1528 "Unterricht der Visitatoren, an die Pfarrherrn im Kurfürstenthum zu Sachsen" or "Instructions for the Visitors of Parish Pastors in Electoral Saxony", followed by his 1522 Enchiridion. Together these make up his core works on the subject of education, earning him the title given by Luther: "Germany's teacher". The original German texts follow the English translation for easy reference and this edition contains a new 2023 Afterword by the Translator. Melanchthon’s 1522 Enchiridion sought to teach theology in the family home as a replacement for the state-run religious institutions. Named after Augustine's Enchiridion, which in turn was named after Epictetus' Enchiridion, Melanchthon sought to provide an ethical foundation for Protestantism, which was in disarray. The rampant Antinomianism which rejected all “legalism” and stated there is no moral code to which Christians should adhere to caused a related problem for the reformation. Knowledge of the Ten Commandments and the Old Testament was key to fixing this problem to Melanchthon, so together with Luther they published extensive educational reforms and school material. The Elector of Saxony saw this sorry state of affairs in Protestant Germany in terms of education, and asked Luther to fix it. Melanchthon took lead, and issued this 1527 Instructions for the Visitors of Parish Pastors in Electoral Saxony, and visited the local churches. A great deal of Melanchthon’s work was in the field of education, leading to his title of "Germany's teacher".

Book Law and The Christian Tradition in Scandinavia

Download or read book Law and The Christian Tradition in Scandinavia written by Kjell Å Modéer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive history of law and religion in the Nordic context. The entwinement of law and religion in Scandinavia encompasses an unusual history, not widely known yet important for its impact on contemporary political and international relations in the region. The volume provides a holistic picture from the first written legal sources of the twelfth century to the law of the present secular welfare states. It recounts this history through biographical case studies. Taking the point of view of major influential figures in church, politics, university, and law, it thus presents the principal actors who served as catalysts in ecclesiastical and secular law through the centuries. This refreshing approach to legal history contributes to a new trend in historiography, particularly articulated by a younger generation of experienced Nordic scholars whose work is featured prominently in this volume. The collection will be a valuable resource for academics and researchers working in the areas of Legal History and Law and Religion.

Book The Regensburg Article 5 on Justification

Download or read book The Regensburg Article 5 on Justification written by Anthony N. S. Lane and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the justification of sinners is one of the most complex regions of Christian theology. The Regensburg article on justification proposed a solution that it was hoped would be acceptable to both sides, Protestant and Catholic. In 1541 at the Regensburg Colloquy, three leading Protestant theologians (Melanchthon, Bucer, and Pistorius) and three leading Catholic theologians (Eck, Gropper, and Pflug) debated with the aim of producing a commonly agreed statement of belief. The colloquy as a whole eventually failed, but it began with a statement on justification by faith agreed by all the parties, Article 5", leading to an initial burst of optimism. There were two contrasting reactions to Article 5. Some, like Calvin, maintained that it contained the substance of true doctrine; others, like Luther, called it an inconsistent patchwork. These two rival assessments have persisted over the centuries. The aim of this book is to decide between them. It does so by viewing the article in the light of the publications of the key participants and observers, as well as by comparing it with the Tridentine Catholic Decree on Justification. Anthony Lane puts the Regensburg article under the microscope, offering both a wide-ranging study of the article's history and a line-by-line analysis of its content, presenting the original Latin text together with an English translation and running commentary.

Book John Calvin and the Daughters of Sarah

Download or read book John Calvin and the Daughters of Sarah written by John Lee Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of the dissertation then compares Calvin's exegesis of key scriptural texts concerning women with the exegesis of six of his predecessors and a dozen of contemporaries. Two lines are pursued: First, the "regular" doctrine of woman of these exegetes is established by examining their commentary on woman's status as the image of God and on the biblical arguments for woman's subordination. Second, in order to probe these exegetes' "openness to change," their commentary on the exceptional deeds of the patriarchs is surveyed, along with their corresponding view of the matriarchs and prophetesses as exceptional women and as potential precedents. Both lines of research establish Calvin as almost always in the mainstream of commentators and by no means an innovator in women's advocacy.

Book The Enchiridion of Epictetus Complete and Unabridged with Notes

Download or read book The Enchiridion of Epictetus Complete and Unabridged with Notes written by Epictetus and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin term 'enchiridion' connotes a small, essential handbook that sums up a particular matter or subject. So it was with the well-regarded enchiridion of Epictetus, who successfully tranposed the most important principles of Stoicism into this text. Important for students and enthusiasts of ancient philosophy, or for those interested in undertaking a Stoical life, this book exemplifies the tenets of an ethical and Stoic philosophy. For its unstinting commitment to such, this text remained influential and much read among Greek, Roman and later Christian scholars through the centuries following antiquity. The ethical outlook of Epictetus would notably gain favour and quotation from Marcus Aurelius, the 'philosopher king' of the Roman Empire. This paperback edition includes the respected and much-consulted translation by George Long, and is complete with the translator's annotations.
