Book The Flower of Youth

Download or read book The Flower of Youth written by Mary di Michele and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a kind of historical narrative in verse, the poems in this collection depict the coming of age and sexual awareness of the great Italian writer and film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini. The time of this story is World War II; the place is German-occupied northern Italy. Unlike his younger brother, Guido, who took up arms to fight in the resistance, Pasolini chose to help his mother set up a school for the boys too young to fight or be conscripted. The situation ignited an internal war for the young Pasolini that nearly eclipsed the historical moment: a battle within between his desire for boys and his Catholic faith and culture. In addition to the poems that juxtapose Pasolini’s struggle against the backdrop of political and cultural fascism, the book also includes a prologue and an epilogue that details the author’s pilgrimage to the site and her research into the time that shaped Pasolini as a man and as an artist.

Book excerpt: Frederick Buechner's Godric "retells the life of Godric of Finchale, a twelfth-century English holy man whose projects late in life included that of purifying his moral ambition of pride...Sin, spiritual yearning, rebirth, fierce asceticism--these hagiographic staples aren't easy to revitalize but Frederick Buechner goes at the task with intelligent intensity and a fine readiness to invent what history doesn't supply. He contrives a style of speech for his narrator--Godric himself--that's brisk and tough-sinewed...He avoids metaphysical fiddle, embedding his narrative in domestic reality--familiar affection, responsibilities, disasters...All on his own, Mr. Buechner has managed to reinvent projects of self-purification and of faith as piquant matter for contemporary fiction [in a book] notable for literary finish...Frederick Buechner is a very good writer indeed." -- Benjamin DeMott, The New York Times Book Review "From the book's opening sentence...and sensible reader will be caught in Godric's grip...Godric glimmers brightly." -- Peter S. Prescott, Newsweek "Godric is a memorable book...a marvelous gem of a book...destined to become a classic of its kind." -- Michael Heskett, Houston Chronicle "In the extraordinary figure of Godric, both stubborn outsider and true child of God, both worldly and unworldly, Frederick Buechner has found an ideal means of exploring the nature of spirituality. Godric is a living battleground where God fights it out with the world, the Flesh, and the Devil." -- London Times Literary Supplement "Wityh a poet's sensibly and a high reverent fancy, Frederick Buechner paints a memorable portrait." -- Edmund Fuller, The Wall Street Journal

Download or read book The Bones of Cuttlefish written by Eugenio Montale and published by Oakville, Ont. : Mosaic Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of Montale's poems is one of the greatest of modern poetry. Its place is just next to Alfred Prufrock and Other Observations, The Elegies of Duino, Signe ascendant by Andre Breton and other important books of poetry of this century. Although it has been translated into English at various occassions, Antonio Mazza's translation should be praised and recognized as one of the best. Mazza has been translating Montale for some years. this choice would seem to be a matter of faithfulness to the voice whose language, also Mazza's mother tongue, is Italian, with all its musical, rhythmical, incantatory and lexical implications.

Book excerpt: “A compelling, blood-soaked portrait of a young Tutsi rebel who rose to become one of the leading generals in the Congolese Army.” —Details Lieve Joris has long been considered “one of the best journalists in the world” and in The Rebels’ Hour she illuminates the dark heart of contemporary Congo through the prism of one lonely, complicated man—a rebel leader named Assani who becomes a high-ranking general in the Congolese army. As we navigate the chaos of his lawless country alongside him, the pathologically evasive Assani stands out in relief as a man who is both monstrous and sympathetic, perpetrator and victim (Libération, France). “Lieve Joris is of the caliber of Naipaul or Ryszard Kapuscinski, 50% traveler, 50% journalist, 100% writer.” —Elle (France)

And then to travel the world, singing in historic theaters from La Scala in Milan to Vienna, Paris, London, and beyond? What does it take to be hailed as one of the great operatic baritones of all times, heir to a tradition of Verdi baritones that stretches back for generations? And how does it feel to face losing your voice and your livelihood and the sometimes mean-spirited nature of the operatic world?...Sherrill Milnes's story is a true American saga. This book tells the entire story in warm, engaging prose. For anyone interested in the mystique of opera - and what really goes on behind and in front of the scenes - it makes fascinating reading. In American Aria Sherrill Milnes opens his artistic and personal life with great candor and considerable heart, revealing himself to everyone." -- Book jacket
