Download or read book From the Salon to the Schoolroom written by Rebecca Rogers and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a nation educates its children tells us much about the values of its people. From the Salon to the Schoolroom examines the emerging secondary school system for girls in nineteenth-century France and uncovers how that system contributed to the fashioning of the French bourgeois woman. Rebecca Rogers explores the variety of schools--religious and lay--that existed for girls and paints portraits of the women who ran them and the girls who attended them. Drawing upon a wide array of public and private sources--school programs, prescriptive literature, inspection reports, diaries, and letters--she reveals the complexity of the female educational experience as the schoolroom gradually replaced the salon as the site of French women's special source of influence. From the Salon to the Schoolroom also shows how France as part of its civilizing mission transplanted its educational vision to other settings: the colonies in Africa as well as throughout the Western world, including England and the United States. Historians are aware of the widespread ramifications of Jesuit education, but Rogers shows how French education for girls played into the cross-cultural interactions of modern society, producing an image of the Frenchwoman that continues to tantalize and fascinate the Western world today.
Download or read book The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters written by Bart Hellinckx and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For far too long Catholic teaching sisters have been denied their rightful place in the history of education. It is only during the past twenty-five years that researchers in many countries have begun to reveal the fundamental role played by these women in the schooling of children of both the masses and the elite during the 19th and 20th centuries. This essay provides for the first time a detailed overview of the historiography of the teaching sisters in Western Europe, North America, Latin America and Australasia, surveying scholarship since 1985. It reviews the literature on six major themes: contribution to schooling, teaching orders and schools, educational philosophy, content and practice, life and lived experience of teachers and students, the professionalization of teaching, and changes in the composition of the teaching staff. Very rich in bibliographical references, this book is indispensable for all further research on this significant but underexplored group of women teachers."--Publisher's website.

Download or read book Educating the Faithful written by Sarah Ann Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Catholic primary schooling in France from 1830 through World War I, Curtis shows how religious education played a key role in transforming France into a modern nation. She finds persuasive evidence that the French Catholic teaching orders created the culture needed for the development of a modern educational system. Curtis focuses her extensive research on the province of Lyon, though many of her findings can be applied more generally. Her argument that decisions about schooling were driven by pragmatic as well as ideological considerations, for example, is a model for further investigation. Educating the Faithful is the first major study in English of religious education in modern France.
