Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutional Ethics Just at present evolutional ethics is in the ascend ency. Evolution is the watchword that explains all social phenomena. It is true that all the phenomena of society may be included in an ethical investigation; and farther, all of these phenomena may be reduced to an orderly arrangement and the law of this arrange ment may be enunciated, and then the various partial laws may be comprehended under one term, and that term may be evolution. But the question arises, does such an arrangement really explain the develop ment of events in society? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Objection is sometimes taken to the application of the term 'science' to such studies as these. It is said that a Science must necessarily have some department of actual existence for its subject-matter: and. There is no doubt that the term Ethical Science might, according to usage, denote studies that deal with the actually existent: viz. Either the department of Psychology that deals with pleasures and pains, desires and volitions, moral sentiments and judgments, as actual phenomena of individual human minds; or the department of Sociology dealing with similar phenomena, as exhibited by the larger organizations of which individual human beings are ele ments. We Observe, however, that comparatively few persons pursue these studies from pure curiosity, in order merely to ascertain what actually exists, has existed, or will exist in time. Most men wish not only to understand human action, but also to regulate it; they apply the ideas 'good' and 'bad, ' 'right' and 'wrong, ' to the conduct or institutions which they describe; and thus pass, as I should say, from the point of View. Of Psychology or Sociology to the point of View of Ethics or Politics. It is true that the mutual implication Of the two kinds of study is, on any theory, very close and complete, though the precise nature and extent of their connexion is. Download or read book The Beginnings of Ethics Classic Reprint written by Carroll Cutler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Ethics Judging from the course of many writers of text books on Ethics, the references here found in foot notes may be deemed either pedantic or useless, or both. But this is not intended merely as a text-book for classes in institutions of learning. It hopes to do something to direct and stimulate thought upon ethi cal questions in the wider world of thinking and practical men. And surely it ought not to be useless to refer college students and all intelligent readers to other accessible and interesting discussions of the same subject, if they are likely to be helpful or con firmatory or suggestive in any way. It is not ex pected in these days that college students or other readers will confine themselves doggedly to some one text, and not wish to look beyond it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ethics The most considerable alterations, however, occur in Book I. I have thought it desirable to add a good deal of new material on the development of the moral life and of the moral judgment. It may be held that these sub jests belong more properly to Sociology and Psychology than to Ethics in the stricter sense; but I have found that their absence is a more serious defect than their presence. I have also added, at the beginning of Book II., a short historical account of the leading points of view in ethical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tsing Hua Lectures on Ethics Before the students of the High School of Tsing Hua College, Peking, China, during the fall of 1917, when I was temporarily professor of psychology and lecturer on ethics in that institution. Each was pre sented without manuscript and then committed to writing while the matter was still fresh in mind. Very naturally, the original form of spoken discourse has been preserved. They represent the main view points and the gist of arguments which have consti tuted the content of a course in ethics at Hamline University during ten successive years. Book The Theory of Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory of Ethics Classic Reprint written by Arthur Kenyon Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Ethics The logical framework of the position which as a matter of theory I have here attempted to defend will be found more particularly in the first three chapters. These undertake to be a connected piece of reasoning which to some extent stands or falls as a whole. The two more essential features are the conception of value, and the naturalistic theory of duty as having its source in certain negative emotional restrictions on the positive life of desire. In view of the fact that I disagree with his conclu sions on almost every point, I should like to acknowledge a special obligation to the ethical writings of Mr. G. E. Bloore. I have drawn to some extent in the following pages upon articles published at various times recently in the Philo sophical Review. The analysis has however been sharp ened at a good many points; and I trust the argument has been made more convincing by being brought together in a connected form. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inductions of Ethics, And, the Ethics of Individual Life: Being Parts II and III of the Principles of Ethics As explained in the original preface fixed to Part I, that part was written, and issued by itself in 1879, under the im pression that ill-health might wholly prevent me from treat ing the subject of Ethics, if I waited till it was reached in the prescribed course of my work. More than ten years followed, partly occupied in further elaboration of T ice Principles of Sociology, and partly passed in a state of prostration which prevented all serious work. Along with partial recovery there came the decision to write at once the most important of the further divisions of The Prin ciples of Ethics - Part IV: Justice. This was issued sepa rately in June, 1891. As stated in the preface to it, I pro posed thereafter to write, if possible, Parts II and III, completing the first volume. This purpose has fortunately now been compassed; and Parts II and III are herewith issued, as proposed in the original programme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics A preface is generally the most interesting, and not seldom the only interesting, part of a book. It is useful to the hasty critic who wishes to avoid the trouble of reading at all, and to the more serious student who wishes to have the clue to the author's speculations put into his hands at the earliest possible period. I should be glad to be useful to both classes, to save some readers the trouble of getting through more than a couple of paragraphs, and to point out to others what is the kind of result which they may expect from a perusal of the whole work. Book Ethics General and Special Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ethics General and Special Classic Reprint written by Owen A. Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics, General and Special A word about the importance of our subject. This work is intended to throw some additional light on the topic of morality. For Ethics is our theme, and Ethics is the science of morality. And if any detail of thought has a vital bear ing on man's destiny, if any branch of study helps shape his life, that detail of thought is suggested by Ethics, morality is that study. Ethics is the science of putting order in man's free acts; and, when you reflect that all sin, and much trouble, and hell itself are only varying phases of disorder, it must be evident that this science, theoretically mastered and sys tematically reduced to practice, could effect a revolution in the world. And the revolutionists would be hailed as the Emancipators Of mankind. They would go down in history, and they do go down in history as the supremest benefactors of our race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Ethics: An Introduction to the Nature and Ethics of the State IN these days, when the social mind is troubled with a plethora of books, the writer who proposes an addition to the number should be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in him. There is no lack of social studies, but it seems to me that there is room for a book which treats social phenomena from a distinctively Christian point of view, and yet gives adequate place to the con elusions of science and philosophy. What is wanted is a Christian cosmic philosophy, for philosophy must be Christian to be cosmic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Ethics: A Guide to Professional Conduct IT is not more easy to find a solid basis for medical ethics than for general ethics, which latter problem has puzzled philosophers in all times. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were content to take common opinion, the current morality of the time, 'as a sufficient basis, but later criticism sometimes refuses to accept a standard which varies in different stages of civilisation and even among different classes of the same people living at the same time; yet, with the exception of the period during which the teaching of Christ was universally regarded as the inspired Word of God, no undisputed foundation for ethics than the better kind of current opinion has been proposed, and this book is merely an attempt to give expression to the views entertained upon the questions treated by what may be called representative medical opinion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Threshold of Ethics IN the following chapters I have tried to consider, in the briefest fashion, and with the least possible use of technical language, some of the crucial introductory problems which have to be faced by anyone who proposes to read, think or teach about ethics in general or Christian ethics in particular. Even if the book serves no other purpose than to illustrate the importance of ridding oneself of vagueness and ambiguity in the use of some of the com monest words in the language, the time spent upon it will not have been wasted. The chapter headings should indicate sufficiently the subjects which, in spite of all that has been written about them, seem still to require pains taking scrutiny from all to whom the problems of conduct are of serious concern. I have to thank my friend, the Rev. J. S. Bezzant, Fellow of Exeter College and Chancellor-designate of Liverpool Cathedral, for his great kindness in reading the proofs.
