Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: Jeremiah Joyce was one of the accused in the famous Treason Trials of 1794 which marked the suppression of radical agitation in Britain for the ensuing twenty years. He was a political radical who imbibed the traditions of the 'commonwealthman' and actively campaigned for a more democratic and representative state. Through the early 1790s he acted as the metropolitan political agent for his patron the Earl of Stanhope and he liased between radical groups whilst also distributing radical literature including Tom Paine's Rights of Man. He was one of the very few artisans at the end of the eighteenth century adopted by the literary and scientific intelligentsia and was unique in training to become a Unitarian minister at the age of 23 after serving a seven-year trade apprenticeship and having worked as a journeyman. This work traces the legacies, traditions and visions of the English Enlightenment as they are expressed through Joyce's life and literary production. It explores the evolution of these traditions against the threatening background of the French revolution and the developing imperatives for education in general, and science education in particular. By tracing the linkages between political, educational, scientific and publishing cultures, it reflects on the issues of late eighteenth century patronage, the literary forms of popular science and the evolution of the metropolitan book trade. In so doing the book recovers the life of a hitherto much neglected science writer and political activist and contributes to the histories of politics, education, science and the developing discipline of book history.

Book Introducton to the Study of Chemical Philosophy

Download or read book Introducton to the Study of Chemical Philosophy written by William A. Tilden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introducton to the Study of Chemical Philosophy: The Principles of Theoretical and Systematic Chemistry It is now twenty-five years since the first publication of this little book, and in the history of a branch of science like Chemistry this is a long time. In the successive editions which have been called for, efforts have been made to introduce from time to time an account of such new discoveries or new theories as appeared likely to be useful to the student. The time has now come when new matter can no longer be incorporated into the old text. The influence of the new doctrines - especially those relating to stereo-chemistry, to electrolysis, and to the properties of solutions - is felt throughout every department of the science, and phraseology is necessarily so modified to suit the new points of view that no process of patching can be regarded as sufficient to bring old statements of fact or hypothesis into harmony with present ideas. Accordingly the book has been completely recast, and in large part re-written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
