Download or read book Pressing the Limits written by Michael Costello and published by Brass Rabbit Classics. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of Pressing the Limits is experimental monotype "imprinting" rather than "printmaking." "Imprinting" is more expansive, and opens the door to photographic work. "Imprinting" is also more intriguing, and conceptually seminal to the esoteric processes which are shared by all forms of printmaking. The often used term "printmaking" can tend to create the assumption of limitations, which we are battling against. Artists: Michael Costello: B.F.A. Printmaking, Art Institute of San Francisco. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected here, which consider artists from France to Russia and Finland to Greece, argue persuasively that Symbolist approaches to content, form, and subject helped to shape twentieth-century Modernism. Well-known figures such as Kandinsky, Khnopff, Matisse, and Munch are considered alongside lesser-known artists such as Fini, Gyzis, Koen, and Vrubel in order to demonstrate that Symbolist art did not constitute an isolated moment of wild experimentation, but rather an inspirational point of departure for twentieth-century developments.

  • Author : Elize Mazadiego
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2023-10-10

Download or read book Charting space written by Elize Mazadiego and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the late 1960s cartographic formats and spatial information had become a regular feature in many conceptual artworks. This volume offers a rich study of conceptualisms’ mapping practices that includes more expanded forms of spatial representation. The book presents twelve in-depth case studies that address artists’ engagement with matters of space at a time when space was garnering new significance in art, theory and culture. The chapters shed fresh light on an evident ‘spatial turn’ that took place from the postwar to the contemporary period, revealing how it was influenced by larger historical, social and cultural contexts. In addition to raising questions about conceptualism’s relationship to the world, the contributors illustrate how artists’ cartographies served as critical sites for formulating their politics, upsetting prevailing systems and graphing new, heterogenous spaces.
