Download or read book Installation and Operational Comparison of Five Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection Systems written by Richard A. Carello and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares the application and testing of the following five independent cathodic protection (CP) systems installed on three reinforced concrete bridge decks: 1) Coke Breeze; 2) Metallized Zinc; 3) Raychem "Ferex 100"; 4) Eltech "Elgard 210"; 5) Conductive Polymer. All five CP systems were installed under a single contract and work was performed by the same contractor during the summer of 1988. Construction methods, materials, and the difficulties encountered in installing each type of system are included. During the six year study period (November 1988 to November 1994), all five systems were monitored regularly. Parameters monitored were driving voltage, current density, and polarization decay. The efficiency of providing corrosion protection for each system based on these parameters is compared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five individual cathodic protection systems were installed on the U.S. 87 Missouri-Pacific Railroad overpass structure in Big Spring, Texas. The cathodic protection systems were installed in October 1988 as a demonstration project to compare the various systems. Three distributed anode types were used to protect the bridge deck: (1) titanium mesh; (2) conductive polymer; and (3) carbon strand. A hot-sprayed zinc conductive coating anode was applied to sidewalks and a median on the bridge deck, and a conductive paint anode was applied to a bridge bent. Performance data have been collected for each system since installation. The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of the five different cathodic protection systems installed on the Big Spring bridge.

Book A Slotted Cathodic Protection System for Bridge Decks

Download or read book A Slotted Cathodic Protection System for Bridge Decks written by Gerardo G. Clemeña and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A non-overlay, slotted cathodic protection system was installed two years ago on a concrete bridge deck in Virginia. The design, installation, and operation of this system are fairly straightforward. A protective current density of 1.6 mA/ft2 (17 mA/m2) as determined by E-log I curves has been applied constantly on the deck. Various tests have shown that polarization of the structure has been achieved. After more than 18 months in service, the various components of this system appeared to be in good condition.

Download or read book Initial Analysis of Cathodic Protection Systems on US 87 Railroad Overpass Bridge Big Spring Texas written by Harry W. Parker and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 130 pages. The titanium mesh anode continues to function while the conductive polymer anode has failed and the carbon strand anode exhibits instability. The hot-sprayed zinc anode system failed early in the study and the conductive paint anode system shows signs of failure.

The conference was aimed primarily at giving bridge owners and engineers an understanding of cathodic protection as the only means to stop corrosion on bridge decks.

Book Cathodic Protection of Concrete Bridge Decks Using Titanium mesh Anodes

Download or read book Cathodic Protection of Concrete Bridge Decks Using Titanium mesh Anodes written by Gerardo G. Clemeña and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anodes are a critical component of cathodic protection systems. A continuous research effort in Virginia is being aimed at searching for the most suitable anode for use in cathodic protection of the various types of concrete bridge components that are exposed to intrusion by chloride ions. As part of this effort, three different catalyzed titanium mesh anodes were tested, side by side, in a cathodic protection system that was designed and constructed (in conjunction with the rehabilitation of several concrete deck spans) to prevent further reinforcement corrosion-related damage to these structures. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this type of new anode is suitable for application in bridge decks, and if any of the three mesh anodes tested in this study excels over the other. It was observed during construction that the installation of these mesh anodes is compatible with the normal construction procedures involved in the rehabilitation of bridge decks. Observations made during the first four years of operation indicated that, among all the different types of anodes tested to date for bridge decks, the three mesh anodes tested in this study were the most effective. These newly tested anodes probably have a considerably longer service life than other anodes that have been tested to date. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the operational characteristics of the three mesh anodes tested in this study.

Book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks written by Donald R. Jackson (P.E.) and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bridge decks are expected to proved relatively maintenance-free service for approximately 40 years. It has been found, however, that some unprotected bridge decks require major repairs within 5 to 10 years, and often must be replaced after 15 years of service. This premature deterioration is frequently the direct result of an accelerated corrosion process on the reinforcing steel caused by the intrusion of deicing chemicals into bridge deck surfaces. A number of bridges on the Federal-aid system do not have a protective system on their decks. If these bridge decks were protected now, significant savings could be realized by avoiding more expensive repairs later. One positive method of stopping the corrosion process in reinforced concrete bridge decks is cathodic protection. Cathodic protection (CP) has been used for many ears to control the corrosion of buried pipelines and structures in saltwater environments. During the past 8 years, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), through its Demonstration Projects Division, has promoted the use of this technology as a means of preserving existing unprotected reinforced concrete bridge decks. Assistance has been provided to requesting highway agencies for the construction and evaluation of 22 cathodic installations in conjunction with Demonstration Project No. 34, Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks. This report provides a summary of the information furnished by participating highway agencies; it includes project selection criteria, design considerations, construction procedures and problems, and performance criteria and results"--P. i.
