Book Inspiration through Adversity

Download or read book Inspiration through Adversity written by Gerald Ziedenberg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerald Ziedenberg was born in Toronto on October 22, 1939. He had a serious arm defect called Erb’s palsy. His immigrant parents provided a foundation for his life, but school and upper-level education were not encouraged. Despite his weight and arm defect, Gerald Ziedenberg struggled and managed to get through pharmacy school. He went on to have a highly successful career with Shoppers Drug Mart, where he eventually simultaneously had three very profitable downtown drug stores. He efficiently managed these three stores with twelve full-time pharmacists, two hundred employees, and sales in excess of 35 million dollars annually. Gerald completed several marathons and frequently bicycled more than 100 miles a day. As he approached retirement, he was struck down by extremely severe osteoarthritis, and this completely curtailed all his physical activities. His arm defect compounded his problems. After six major surgeries, he was finally approaching a complete cure. During these nine long years of pain and frustration, Gerald returned to the University of Toronto, where he graduated with high distinction in 2003, with a BA in modern history. This was upgraded to an Honors BA in modern history in 2005 (also with high distinction). Gerald won a scholarship for being the “best part-time graduate history student” in 2008. Gerald is now approaching the finalization of his master’s degree in modern history at the University of Toronto. In addition, Gerald has made himself into a public speaker and consultant. He frequently speaks and organizes programs at Beth Tikvah Synagogue. He has appeared on nine different cruises, lecturing on historical people and events of interest as well as destination ports. Gerald also spent large amounts of time lecturing and consulting to Superpharm, a large Israeli drugstore chain and sister company to Shoppers Drug Mart. In the face of severe pain and lack of mobility, Gerald still has made significant contributions to the Jewish community of Toronto and his synagogue. In spite of all the pain, which was excruciating at times, Jerry managed to travel to almost all the places he dreamt of as a child. After a long and successful career as an entrepreneurial pharmacist, Gerald truly managed inspiration through the adversity of his senior years, when he virtually lost a decade of his life.

Book Critical Pedagogies in Physical Education Physical Activity and Health

Download or read book Critical Pedagogies in Physical Education Physical Activity and Health written by Julie Stirrup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Pedagogies in Physical Education, Physical Activity and Health explores critical pedagogy – and critical work around the body, health and physical activity – within physical education. By examining the complex relationships between policies and practice, and how these are experienced by young people, it elucidates the need for critical pedagogy in contemporary times. With contributions from leading international experts in health and physical education, and underpinned by a critical, socio-cultural approach, the book examines how health and physical education are situated across various international contexts and the influence of policy and curriculum. It explores how health is constructed by students and teachers within these contexts as well as how wider spaces and places beyond formal schooling influence learning around the body, health and physical activity. Finally, it considers what progressive pedagogies might ‘look like’ within health and physical education. Chapters utilise empirical work within the field to explore various topics of relevance to critical pedagogy, drawing on theoretical insights while providing practical applications and concluding with reflection points to encourage readers to consider the relevance for their own contexts. Designed to support pedagogical study in a range of contexts, this book will be of particular interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students, teachers and researchers with an interest in physical education, physical activity and health and the role they play in young people’s lives.

Book Clothing and Fashion 4 volumes

Download or read book Clothing and Fashion 4 volumes written by José Blanco F. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 2438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique four-volume encyclopedia examines the historical significance of fashion trends, revealing the social and cultural connections of clothing from the precolonial times to the present day. This sweeping overview of fashion and apparel covers several centuries of American history as seen through the lens of the clothes we wear—from the Native American moccasin to Manolo Blahnik's contribution to stiletto heels. Through four detailed volumes, this work delves into what people wore in various periods in our country's past and why—from hand-crafted family garments in the 1600s, to the rough clothing of slaves, to the sophisticated textile designs of the 21st century. More than 100 fashion experts and clothing historians pay tribute to the most notable garments, accessories, and people comprising design and fashion. The four volumes contain more than 800 alphabetical entries, with each volume representing a different era. Content includes fascinating information such as that beginning in 1619 through 1654, every man in Virginia was required to plant a number of mulberry trees to support the silk industry in England; what is known about the clothing of enslaved African Americans; and that there were regulations placed on clothing design during World War II. The set also includes color inserts that better communicate the visual impact of clothing and fashion across eras.
