Book On the Cultivation of Gardens

Download or read book On the Cultivation of Gardens written by Walahfrid Strabo and published by Ithuriel's Spear. This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Writing. Gardening. Widely regarded as the first gardening book in European history, and currently the only translation available in English, this book was written in the ninth century by Walafrid Strabo, Abbot of the Carolingian monastery at Reichenau Island. It tells us what our medieval gardener is growing in his garden, explains the benefits and medicinal properties of the plants, and gives an idea of how they are to be looked after. James Mitchell introduces and translates this classic from the original Latin hexameters, and S.F. Bay Area gardening columnist Richard Schwarzenberger provides a foreword.

Book Horoscopes and Public Spheres

Download or read book Horoscopes and Public Spheres written by Günther Oestmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the specific role of horoscopic astrology in Western culture from antiquity to the nineteenth century. Focusing on the public appearance of astrological rhetoric, the essays break new ground for a better understanding of the function of horoscopes in public discourse. The volume's three parts address the use of imperial horoscopes in late antiquity, the transformation of doctrines and rhetorics in Islamic medieval contexts, and the important status of astrology in early modern Europe. The combination of in-depth historical studies and methodological considerations results in an important contribution to religious and cultural studies.

Book Ladies Can t Climb Ladders

Download or read book Ladies Can t Climb Ladders written by Jane Robinson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a myth that either of the World Wars liberated women. The Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act of 1919 was one of the most significant pieces of legislation in modern Britain. It marked at once political watershed and a social revolution; the point at which women of 21 and over were recognised in law as being as competent as men. But were they? What actually happened when this bill was passed? This is the story of what happened next. Ladies Can't Climb Ladders focuses on the lives of six women - six pioneers - forging paths in the fields of medicine, law, academia, architecture, engineering and the church. Robinson's startling study into the public and private lives of these women sheds light not on the desires and ambitions of her subjects but how family and society responded to the working woman and what their legacy looks like today. This book is written in their honour. It is a book about live subjects: equal opportunity, the gender pay gap, and whether women can expect, or indeed deserve, to have it at all. 'An important and crackingly good read.' - Telegraph

Book In Laudem Iustini Augusti Minoris

Download or read book In Laudem Iustini Augusti Minoris written by Flavius Cresconius Corippus and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The few scraps of information which we have about Flavius Cresconius Corippus come almost exclusively from his two poems, the lohannis and the In laudem lustini Augusti minoris. Despite this he was still the last important Latin author of Late Antiquity. Corippus's poem on the accession of Justin II is considered a most unusual work. Unlike the lohannis, so far as we know the only other product by the same author, it tells of no epic battles against barbarian peoples. Instead we have a narrative poem, covering in great detail the accession of an emperor, the first week of his reign and (in part, for the poem breaks off before the end) his inauguration as consul. This is the first book to utilize or interpret this immensely valuable body of evidence as a whole. Cameron has contributed to one of the most urgent tasks of modern scholars of late antiquity and (still more) of the Byzantine period-the provision of a readable text with translation and commentary of this important work which until now was only available in plain and inadequate editions.
