Download or read book Herbal Medicines for Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Diseases Novel Pharmacological and Toxicological approaches Volume I 2nd edition written by Muhammad Hasnat, and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is part of a series with: Herbal Medicines for Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Diseases - Novel Pharmacological and Toxicological approaches, Volume II Ethnopharmacology deals with the exchange of knowledge about people's use of herbal medicines and their pharmacological effects. The information related to therapeutic agents of plant origin and their toxic effects was preserved by oral tradition as well as recorded in materia medica. Many drugs that are now available on the market have been developed from this valuable information. Today, scientists that specialize in medicinal chemistry use these existing herbal drugs to develop and produce more therapeutically active agents with less toxic side effects. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is a multi-organ system, consisting of bacteria, and digestive enzymes that have the capacity of degrading food and other molecules. Diseases associated with this organ system include peptic ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease, gastric cancer to name a few. The liver receives seventy percent of its blood supply from the GIT via the hepatic portal vein. The disruption in the gut–liver axis is associated with liver diseases including alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and autoimmune liver disease (AILD). NAFLD can cause non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which can develop into liver cirrhosis through inflammation and fibrosis. Liver cirrhosis is categorized as an end-stage of chronic liver disease, which impairs innate immunity-related genes. Growing evidence from preclinical studies proposes that the gut–liver axis leads to targeted therapeutic modalities for various liver injuries. Therefore, therapeutic treatment of these conditions is essential to prevent progression to these more harmful late-stage diseases.

Book excerpt: Liver Pathophysiology: Therapies and Antioxidants is a complete volume on morphology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and treatment of liver diseases. It uses an integral approach towards the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of hepatic injury, and how their deleterious effects may be abrogated by the use of antioxidants. Written by the most prominent authors in the field, this book will be of use to basic and clinical scientists and clinicians working in the biological sciences, especially those dedicated to the study and treatment of liver pathologies. Presents the most recent advances in hepatology, with a special focus on the role of oxidative stress in liver injury. Provides in vivo and in vitro models to study human liver pathology. Explains the beneficial effects of antioxidants on liver diseases. Contains the most recent and modern treatments of hepatic pathologies, including, but not limited to, stem cells repopulation, gene therapy and liver transplantation.

Book Gastrointestinal and Liver Effects of Fruits and their Synergism with Drug Therapy Exploring Possible Mechanisms of Action

Download or read book Gastrointestinal and Liver Effects of Fruits and their Synergism with Drug Therapy Exploring Possible Mechanisms of Action written by Irwin Rose Alencar De Menezes and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, there is a significant increase in demand for food and food products that provide health benefits beyond their nutritional aspects. These benefits can be used to treat or prevent several diseases through the interactions of phytoconstituents with biological targets or through antioxidant properties. Another important aspect is the synergism of therapy with drugs and phytoconstituents originating from fruits, which can modify the bioavailability or efficacy, increasing future opportunities for drug development. In addition, these phytochemicals can be incorporated as an alternative for development, with new applications for multitarget therapeutic using a better understanding of biochemical and electrical effects or molecular interaction in a biologic system.

Book Advances in Novel Drugs and Targets for Hepatic and Gastrointestinal Diseases

Download or read book Advances in Novel Drugs and Targets for Hepatic and Gastrointestinal Diseases written by Yong Gao and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global incidence of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases has been gradually increasing in recent years, which seriously threatens human health and increases the economic burden. More importantly, gastrointestinal and hepatic malignancies have the highest incidence and mortality rates among all tumors, such as liver cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer. There are also non-neoplastic diseases such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, chronic atrophic gastritis, ulcerative colitis, and reflux esophageal disease that also affect patients' quality of life. Although progress has been made in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases, and corresponding therapeutic drugs have been also developed, the specific mechanisms of the diseases are still not revealed and there is a lack of specific drugs. In view of this, this topic aims to explore new molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis and potential therapeutic agents and pharmacological effects of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases.
