Book Boston Marathon Bombing 10 Years Later

Download or read book Boston Marathon Bombing 10 Years Later written by Tracey Folly and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 15, 2013, two hours after the first runner had crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon, two bombs detonated in the crowd of onlookers, turning the event into a war zone. Brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were identified as the suspects responsible for dropping backpacks containing pressure cooker bombs into trash cans and detonating them remotely via cellphone. In "Boston Marathon Bombing 10 Years Later: Five Essays," a pool of talented writers comes together to offer their opinions and insights on the events of that terrible day. In April 2013, following the Boston Marathon Bombing, I commissioned five writers to create essays detailing their thoughts and opinions about the facts as we knew them then. These essays were written not long after the incident and lack the insights they might have contained if they were written as the aftermath played out. "Boston Marathon Bombing 10 Years Later: Five Essays" was written and originally posted in April 2013 under its original title "Boston Marathon Bombing: Essays and Reflections." Shortly thereafter, I made the decision to remove the booklet from publication. I wasn't ready. Now, more than a decade after the tragic incident of ten years ago, I've decided to dust off the manuscript and republish it as a tribute to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing, ten years later. All contributors have chosen to be identified by their pseudonyms.

Book Lessons Learned from the Boston Marathon Bombings Preparing for and Responding to the Attack

Download or read book Lessons Learned from the Boston Marathon Bombings Preparing for and Responding to the Attack written by Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs United States Senate and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-03 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the events of April 15, 2013 unfolded, we wrestled with the fact that we were witnessing the first successful terrorist bombing on U.S. soil since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Just as we did in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, we must learn from the Boston Marathon bombing. We will examine the preparations made by the city of Boston and by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to deal with a crisis of this nature. We will also assess how the city, State, and Federal Government responded once Boylston Street was rocked by the two homemade explosives. For more than a decade, our country has worked to promote effective emergency response systems that help cities and States to mitigate the effects of a terrorist attack. In the years since September 11, 2001, we have learned that it takes preparation, training, effective leadership, and a coordinated response plan to minimize the impact and devastation caused by disaster. By all accounts, Boston had many of these elements in place on April 15, and lives were saved as a result. Today's hearing will take a step toward identifying the lessons learned from the preparedness for and response to the marathon attacks.

Download or read book Maximum Harm written by Michele R. McPhee and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Maximum Harm, veteran investigative journalist Michele R. McPhee unravels the complex story behind the public facts of the Boston Marathon bombing. She examines the bombers' roots in Dagestan and Chechnya, their struggle to assimilate in America, and their growing hatred of the United States - a deepening antagonism that would prompt federal prosecutors to dub Dzhokhar Tsarnaev "America's worst nightmare." The difficulties faced by the Tsarnaev family of Cambridge, Massachusetts, are part of the public record. Circumstances less widely known are the FBI's recruitment of the older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as a "mosque crawler" to inform on radical separatists here and in Chechnya; the tracking down and killing of radical Islamic separatists during the six months he spent in Russia - travel that raised eyebrows, since he was on several terrorist watchlists; the FBI's botched deals and broken promises with regard to his immigration; and the disenchantment, rage, and growing radicalization of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar, along with their mother, sisters, and Tamerlan's wife, Katherine. Maximum Harm is also a compelling examination of the Tsarnaev brothers' movements in the days leading up to the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013, the subsequent investigation, the Tsarnaevs' murder of MIT police officer Sean Collier, the high-speed chase and shootout that killed Tamerlan, and the manhunt in which the authorities finally captured Dzhokhar, hiding in a Watertown backyard. McPhee untangles the many threads of circumstance, coincidence, collusion, motive, and opportunity that resulted in the deadliest attack on the city of Boston to date.

Book Lessons to be Learned from Three Mass Casualty Events

Download or read book Lessons to be Learned from Three Mass Casualty Events written by Vivian Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disaster preparedness is absolutely necessary as the number of both man-made and natural disasters increases worldwide. Not confined to any regions or people, disasters can result in mass casualties. The United States is not spared from these incidents. Ever since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States has tried to establish more effective and efficient emergency management systems at all levels in order to respond to any type of disaster. Due to the effort, much improvement in disaster preparedness was observed when mass casualty events happened within the last 10 years. Although there are many independent studies for each mass casualty event, there are very few studies done to compare multiple mass casualty incidents and find commonly shared lessons. This paper aims to determine whether there are any similarities among three mass casualty events - 2005 Hurricane Katrina, the 2009 Aurora Theatre Shooting, and the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. Because the response to the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing was the most seamless among the three, the most in-depth investigation was done on this incident. Through the examination, the study will also prove if any of the lessons learned from these events can be implemented in future mass casualty incidents. To do so, many current reports and literature reviews were analyzed. The conclusion gained from this study is that there are indeed commonly occurring challenges in disasters and various aspects of disaster preparedness that require practice and preparation. In addition, learning from others' unfortunate mass casualty incidents and their lessons is an important part of strengthening the existing disaster preparedness systems.
