Book excerpt: An inspiring account of teachers in ordinary circumstances doing extraordinary things, showing us how to transform education What School Could Be offers an inspiring vision of what our teachers and students can accomplish if trusted with the challenge of developing the skills and ways of thinking needed to thrive in a world of dizzying technological change. Innovation expert Ted Dintersmith took an unprecedented trip across America, visiting all fifty states in a single school year. He originally set out to raise awareness about the urgent need to reimagine education to prepare students for a world marked by innovation--but America's teachers one-upped him. All across the country, he met teachers in ordinary settings doing extraordinary things, creating innovative classrooms where children learn deeply and joyously as they gain purpose, agency, essential skillsets and mindsets, and real knowledge. Together, these new ways of teaching and learning offer a vision of what school could be—and a model for transforming schools throughout the United States and beyond. Better yet, teachers and parents don't have to wait for the revolution to come from above. They can readily implement small changes that can make a big difference. America's clock is ticking. Our archaic model of education trains our kids for a world that no longer exists, and accelerating advances in technology are eliminating millions of jobs. But the trailblazing of many American educators gives us reasons for hope. Capturing bold ideas from teachers and classrooms across America, What School Could Be provides a realistic and profoundly optimistic roadmap for creating cultures of innovation and real learning in all our schools.

Book excerpt: Mind Your Own Life: The Journey Back to Love At last! An authentic message of love and acceptance! Life-enhancing semi-autobiography. Raised a devout Christian in the South and endeavoring to uphold indoctrinated beliefs, Anson struggled to find true affirmation amongst the ambiguity of being gay with religious beliefs that espoused intolerance. After a brief military stint, he married and fathered two children, simultaneously battling depression, anger and fear before finally accepting that he was inherently a gay man. This book deals head on with the divisive issues of religion and politics that have for centuries caused rifts between, countries, families, and facilitated a recent spate of bullying and suicide among teens and gays. He secretly harbored for many years his struggle to suppress his nascent sexuality in hopes of escaping the paradox of being gay with Christian beliefs, hopeful that being gay would vanish and relieve this tremendous burden. Anson sought validation from a religion that despised him wholly. This book; targeting parents, adults, and teens; chronicles Ansons struggles with depression, denial, and acceptance in the face of extreme homophobia perpetuated by religion, politics and false beliefs. Anson assertively portrays an uncorrupted universal love and acceptance as our inherent birthright and explores the connection with our spirituality, sexuality, and morality. Anson tell his story with sublime prose and grace with inquisitive insight of our human experience. His story is beautifully rendered in a way that is challenging, thought-provoking and inspirational. It hits home for many and told in a way that you will not soon forget.

Book Norms and Illegality

Download or read book Norms and Illegality written by Cristiana Panella and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norms and Illegality: Intimate Ethnographies and Politics explores liminal and illegal practices in relation to political control and cultural normativity. The contributors draw on years of ethnographic experiences in Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Italy, Madagascar, Mali, Philippines, and Thailand to study the contradictions of what is legal and illegal. They explore the production of illegal subjects by the state, the creation of illegal and normative values by liminal and illegal actors, and the mutual entanglements of legal and illegal in the public domains of markets and trade networks. This volume shows that criminalization policies are not necessarily oriented toward erasing crime. Instead, the contributors maintain that opaque spaces ensure the efficacy of control and outwardly conform to the rhetoric and ethics of global neoliberalism. Within these contexts, the contributors shed light on moral economies and frames of value entailed in systems of representation that have been set up by individuals who are deemed illegal, liminal, or deviant in their confrontations with the state. This book is recommended for students and scholars of anthropology, political science, and urban studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterization is a vital issue in creative and imaginative writing for children. Within a communicative framework of systemic functional linguistics, this book reveals how the fantasy characterization is construed in the SL text, and how it is constructed and distorted in the Chinese translation, based on a description and interpretation of the translation shifts, before an explanation is given of the semiotic relationship between those shifts and the characterization. As a work of descriptive translation studies, this book provides approaches to transitivity construal of the characterization of fantasy in both the SL and TL texts. It can also provide empirical evidence for comparative text studies as well as critical discourse analysis. In addition, it will serve to provide implications for the creative writing of fantasy stories, as well as insightful implications for very practical purposes, such as the evaluation of clinical discourse.

Book Doing Good Great

Download or read book Doing Good Great written by Willie Cheng and published by Epigram Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From migrant workers and media freedom to housing slums, this book captures the gamut of social issues that plague Asia, telling the stories behind thirteen committed individuals who have effected great change in their respective causes. These stories are about the behemoths such as Dharma Master Cheng Yen from Taiwan and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed from Bangladesh who lead some of the world’s largest nongovernmental organisations; to Aki Ra from Cambodia and Sompop Jakantra from Thailand whose smaller teams have saved hundreds of lives from landmines and prostitution respectively. The social heroes portrayed have pursued seemingly quotidian causes that citizens of developed countries may take for granted, such as toilets in India, decent housing for the poor in Hong Kong, and mainly making life better for those whom society appears to have forgotten. Reader Reviews: “The people working to address social issues are not always as well-documented as the issues themselves…it is important to bring an awareness of them into the mainstream media. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by societal injustice, but these stories show that even when you can’t count on your government to protect your rights, individuals working in social justice can make positive change.” – Camille Neale, AWARE “This book is an excellent snapshot of 12 Asian countries and their circumstances and challenges.” – Cheong Suk-Wai, The Straits Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has stepped at the beginning of the Water-Carrier Age’s threshold. Its influence is gradually being felt in all areas of life. This is the time for spiritual renewal and the turning point for the shifting of consciousness. Contrary to the period of mental bondage, prejudice, and religious bigotry, which was the Piscean Era characteristic, we are awakening to another chapter of human history, leading to the realization of the Oneness of life and the human race’s interconnectedness. The world is currently undergoing radical socio-economic and political upheavals because we are transitioning from one chapter of human history to another. Some religious leaders and sensationalistic New Age writers have taken these dramatic changes as signs of the end of the world. Contrary to that, this work postulate that the challenging events indicate the close of one chapter of human history and the beginning of a new one. “We embrace and celebrate the coming of a new age of enlightenment, the awareness of human beings’ brotherhood.”
