Book Archaeological Insights Into the Custer Battle

Download or read book Archaeological Insights Into the Custer Battle written by Douglas D. Scott and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August, 1983, a grassfire raged up Deep Ravine and across the dry, grass-covered battlefield where, in 1876, men of the Seventh U.S. Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer had fought and died at the hands of a Sioux and Cheyenne force led by Sitting Bull. The removal of the normally dense ground cover revealed enough evidence to suggest that an archaeological survey would be fruitful and perhaps could address some unanswered questions about the battle. Describing archaeological investigations during the first year (1984) of a two-year survey, this book offers a detailed analysis of the physical evidence remaining after the battle. Precise information regarding the locations of artifacts and painstaking analyses of the artifacts themselves have uncovered much new information about the guns used in the battle by the victorious Indian warriors. Not only have the types of guns been identified, but through the use of archaeological and criminal-investigative techniques the actual numbers of firearms can now be estimated. This analysis of the battlefield, which represents a significant advance in methodology, shows that the two forces left artifacts in what can be defined as "combatant patterns." What did happen after Custer’s trumpeter, John Martin-dispatched with an order for Captain Benteen to "be quick"-turned and saw the doomed battalion for the last time? Written to satisfy both professional and layman, this book is a vital complement to the historical record.

Book Insights Into the Role of Microorganisms on Food Quality and Food Safety

Download or read book Insights Into the Role of Microorganisms on Food Quality and Food Safety written by Jinxuan Cao and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of growth, survival and biochemical activity of microorganisms in the food matrix are the result of stress reactions in response to the changes in the physical and chemical conditions in the food microenvironment. The microorganisms colonize the food matrix and grow into spatial heterogeneity with in situ cell-to-cell ecological interactions, which often happen during food processing and preservation. Ecological approaches to studying the evolution of microbial flora would be beneficial and recommended for better comprehending the microbiological processes involved in food processing, ripening, and preservation, improving microbiological safety, and evaluating the effective compositions of the microbial populations in developing the food quality including appearance, flavor, and nutrients. This topic addresses the mechanisms of microorganisms on the formation and development of the food matrix's appearance, flavor, and nutrients, as well as strategies for preventing and reducing microorganism contamination throughout the processing and preservation of the food matrix. Thus, we are concerning several key problems: How can we understand microorganism roles in improving food safety or removal of toxic compounds? What are the key factors that affect the growth and metabolism of microorganisms during the processing and preservation? What are the mechanisms for inducing the changes in nutritional value and organoleptic quality of the food matrix by microorganisms?

Book New Insights into the Iron Age Archaeology of Edom Southern Jordan

Download or read book New Insights into the Iron Age Archaeology of Edom Southern Jordan written by Erez Ben-Yosef and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 1079 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated south of the Dead Sea, near the famous Nabatean capital of Petra, the Faynan region in Jordan contains the largest deposits of copper ore in the southern Levant. The Edom Lowlands Regional Archaeology Project (ELRAP) takes an anthropological-archaeology approach to the deep-time study of culture change in one of the Old World's most important locales for studying technological development. Using innovative digital tools for data recording, curation, analyses, and dissemination, the researchers focused on ancient mining and metallurgy as the subject of surveys and excavations related to the Iron Age (ca. 1200-500 BCE), when the first local, historical state-level societies appeared in this part of the eastern Mediterranean basin. This comprehensive and important volume challenges the current scholarly consensus concerning the emergence and historicity of the Iron Age polity of biblical Edom and some of its neighbors, such as ancient Israel. Excavations and radiometric dating establish a new chronology for Edom, adding almost 500 more years to the Iron Age, including key periods of biblical history when David, Solomon, and the Egyptian pharaoh Shoshenq I are alleged to have interacted with Edom. Included is a 7 gigabyte DVD with over 55,000 files of additional data and photographs from the project.

Here, a unique set of innovative studies begins to uncover details of the lives, medical practice and research of some famous and less well-known Portuguese physicians, the Portuguese response to past pandemics, and analyses of a wide range of items of medical material culture and materia medica. The contributions here elucidate topics as wide-ranging as Graeco-Roman medicine and surgery, the history of spectacles, defence against plague and other epidemics, the history of medicinal emeralds and cinchonine, and echoes of the first female forensic physician in Portugal. This book will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of science, and especially those who enjoy the history of medicine and pharmacy.

Book Insights into Inclusive Growth Employment and Wellbeing in India

Download or read book Insights into Inclusive Growth Employment and Wellbeing in India written by Arup Mitra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-12 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What changes are occurring at the macro and the sectoral levels, how the labour market changes are taking place and what impact is felt on the low income households are some of the questions that the present volume focuses on. It begins by examining the sectoral composition of growth, revisiting the issues related to industry-services balance, and also brings out the spatial dimension of growth. On the one hand the industry does not seem to have played a major role in the context of employment generation as imported technology is by and large capital intensive in nature. On the other hand, the services-led growth is seen to have reduced the pace of poverty reduction. Given the services-led growth the possible impact of trade in services on employment both in the formal and informal sectors have been worked out, indicating limited positive spill-over effects. The labour market outcomes are brought out with great details suggesting that rapid economic growth in India could not result in productive employment generation on a large scale. The gender dimensions of employment are brought out to verify if reduction in labour market inequality can result in improving the position of women in other spheres encompassing the decision making process both within the household and outside the household. Issues relating to urbanisation and rural-urban migration are also covered to understand the dynamics of urban poverty and to bring out the challenges of population transfer given the spatial concentration of growth. The job search practices pursued by the low income households are often pursued in terms of informal networks. What problems are associated with such mechanisms in experiencing improvements in wellbeing levels are covered in the present volume. On the whole, the volume offers an explanation of limited poverty reduction in a situation of rapid economic growth on the basis of an inter-disciplinary framework though efforts are being made to keep the methodology quantitatively rigorous.
