Book The Self Aware Image

    Book Details:
  • Author : Victor I. Stoichita
  • Publisher : Harvey Miller Pub
  • Release : 2015-04-30
  • ISBN : 9781909400115
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book The Self Aware Image written by Victor I. Stoichita and published by Harvey Miller Pub. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the painting as an art object is a relatively recent invention. The Self-Aware Image offers an impressive and complex account of the origins and development of this invention from the late Renaissance through the end of the baroque age. In comparison to the old image characterized by its preeminently liturgical function and its display in a predetermined space, the painting as the new image is increasingly autonomous and movable. As a modern art object, the painting becomes the focus of an aesthetic contemplation through its insertion into a gallery or a collection. As a result of the Protestant iconoclasm and the advancement of scientific knowledge, the essence and role of the image is put into question and thematized not only by theologians and scholars, but especially by artists. The painting thus becomes a field of visual experimentation in which art reflects on itself, its potential, its limits, its truth, and its nothingness. The representation of windows, doors, niches, mirrors, and paintings enable artists to embed the image within the image, to frame the fictiveness of the image in order to deceive, puzzle, and challenge the beholder. The pictorial devices through which artists introduce their authorial self into the image and stage the making of the image itself form the foundation of a new poetics: the poetics of metapainting. First published in French in 1993, Victor Stoichita's Self-Aware Image has become a classic of the history of art. This new, updated, and improved English edition marks the twentieth anniversary of a work that radically changed the perception of seventeenth-century art and that constitutes an ever-valid reference for contemporary scholarship. An introduction by Lorenzo Pericolo illustrates the great importance of the book for our comprehension of baroque painting.

Book Live Imaging In Zebrafish Insights Into Development And Disease

Download or read book Live Imaging In Zebrafish Insights Into Development And Disease written by Karuna Sampath and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-08-30 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The zebrafish embryo has now been well established as an organism of choice for the genetic and cell biological basis of vertebrate development. Large-scale forward genetic screens together with reverse genetic tools have resulted in a flood of new information on the regulation of vertebrate development. Furthermore, the unique transparency of the zebrafish embryo allows unprecedented access to cells and tissues and many important discoveries on gene function have already been made using live imaging techniques in this organism. This book successfully brings together state-of-the-art methodologies of live imaging, such as the use of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), that will be useful for investigators in the field of developmental biology to address their favorite problem using cell biological approaches in the zebrafishOne of the key reasons that has made the zebrafish such a popular vertebrate model is its transparency and its potential for high-resolution cell biology and imaging. However, there is no comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the new “live imaging” tools that can now be used in the zebrafish. Furthermore, there are many new microscopy methods that have been adapted for use in zebrafish, and this book can be a good guide even for scientists already familiar with the imaging advantages of this model.

  • Author : Courtney R. Baker
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2015-08-30
  • ISBN : 0252097599
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Humane Insight written by Courtney R. Baker and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-08-30 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of black America, the image of the mortal, wounded, and dead black body has long been looked at by others from a safe distance. Courtney Baker questions the relationship between the spectator and victim and urges viewers to move beyond the safety of the "gaze" to cultivate a capacity for humane insight toward representations of human suffering. Utilizing the visual studies concept termed the "look," Baker interrogates how the notion of humanity was articulated and recognized in oft-referenced moments within the African American experience: the graphic brutality of the 1834 Lalaurie affair; the photographic exhibition of lynching, Without Sanctuary ; Emmett Till's murder and funeral; and the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Contemplating these and other episodes, Baker traces how proponents of black freedom and dignity used the visual display of violence against the black body to galvanize action against racial injustice. An innovative cultural study that connects visual theory to African American history, Humane Insight asserts the importance of ethics in our analysis of race and visual culture, and reveals how representations of pain can become the currency of black liberation from injustice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in honour of Michael Vertin the distinguished philosopher and Lonergan scholar at the University of Toronot, The Importance of Insight brings together a number of thoughtful essays by leading Lonergan scholars. These essays investigate the importance of Lonergan's articulation of insight, and how it can be applied within the fields of cognitional theory, theology, ethics, and politics. The contributors address several issues emerging from the post-Enlightenment crisis of meaning and value, as well as more specific contemporary concerns, such as the nature of Christian revelation, the articulation of Church doctrine, and the ethical training health care professionals should receive. By indicating what there is to be gained by understanding and applying insight in a number of different contexts, this collection highlights the relevance of Lonergan's thought in the contemporary intellectual and cultural milieu, and, at the same time, makes a significant contribution to the development of Lonergan's thought itself. In this way, The Importance of Insight offers a window into cutting-edge Lonergan scholarship and some of its central concerns and preoccupations.

Book The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering

Download or read book The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering written by Sanjoy Mahajan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tools to make hard problems easier to solve. In this book, Sanjoy Mahajan shows us that the way to master complexity is through insight rather than precision. Precision can overwhelm us with information, whereas insight connects seemingly disparate pieces of information into a simple picture. Unlike computers, humans depend on insight. Based on the author's fifteen years of teaching at MIT, Cambridge University, and Olin College, The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering shows us how to build insight and find understanding, giving readers tools to help them solve any problem in science and engineering. To master complexity, we can organize it or discard it. The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering first teaches the tools for organizing complexity, then distinguishes the two paths for discarding complexity: with and without loss of information. Questions and problems throughout the text help readers master and apply these groups of tools. Armed with this three-part toolchest, and without complicated mathematics, readers can estimate the flight range of birds and planes and the strength of chemical bonds, understand the physics of pianos and xylophones, and explain why skies are blue and sunsets are red. The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering will appear in print and online under a Creative Commons Noncommercial Share Alike license.
