Download or read book GIS Tutorial written by Wilpen L. Gorr and published by ESRI, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study guide meets a growing demand for effective GIS training by combining ArcGIS tutorials and self-study exercises that start with the basics and progress to more difficult functionality. Presented in a step-by-step format, the book can be adapted to a reader's specific training needs, from a classroom of graduate students to individaul study. Readers learn to use a range of GIS functionality from creating maps and collecting data to using geoprocessing tools and models for advanced analysis. the authors have incorporated three proven learning methods: scripted exercises that use detailed step-by-step insturctions and result graphics, Your Turn exercises that require users to perform tasks without steo-by-step instructions, and exercise assignements that pose real-world problem scenarios. A fully functioning, 180-day trial version of ArcView 9.2 software, data for working through the tutorials, and Web-based teacher resources are also included.

Download or read book Web Cartography written by Jan-Menno Kraak and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps and atlases are created as soon as information on our geography has been clarified. They are used to find directions or to get insight into spatial relations. They are produced and used both on paper as well as on-screen. The Web is the new medium for spreading and using maps. This book explains the benefits of this medium from the perspective of the user, and the map provider. Opportunities and pitfalls are illustrated by a set of case-studies. A website accompanies the book and provides a dynamic environment for demonstrating many of the principles set out in the text, including access to a basic course in Internet cartography as well as links to other interesting places on the Web. Professor Kraak looks at basic questions such as "I have this data what can I do with it?" and discusses the various functions of maps on the web. Web Cartography also looks at the particularities of multidimensional web maps and addresses topics such as map contents (colour, text and symbols), map physics (size and resolution), and the map environment (interface design/site contents).

This book was released on 2006-02-15 with total page 1373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources stored by dams and reservoirs play an essential role in water resource management, hydropower and flood control. Where there is an extensive network of dam infrastructures, dams have made a major contribution to economic and social development, providing considerable storage capacity per capita. However, dams and reservoirs may also have an important social and environmental impact, and should be studied within the framework of integrated water resource management and sustainable development. Dams and Reservoirs, Societies and Environment in the 21st Century presents the latest research on the role played by dams and reservoirs in 21st century societies, in developed, emergent and developing countries. It analyses the viability of dams and suggests alternative solutions from a holistic perspective, considering the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects. Other issues covered include the social acceptability of dams, public involvement and dam awareness. The book covers subjects ranging from dam engineering, through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, to their social and environmental impact, and contains numerous case studies of the constructive contributions that reservoirs have made to water development and management. The book is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water managers, governmental organizations and commercial enterprises responsible for dam development and management.

Download or read book Geographic Information Systems in Fisheries Management and Planning written by Gertjan de Graaf and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many fishery biologists and policy makers involved in inland fisheries management and planning are unaware of GIS technology and its potential for fisheries planning and management. The FAO Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service (FIRI) has been active for the last 19 years in promoting the use of GIS and remote sensing in fisheries and aquaculture. Promotional activities have been carried out through training, projects, field missions, and oral presentations and publications. However, a manual to use along with GIS software for the fisheries biologists in the field explaining GIS in a way that is understandable to non-GIS users had not been produced until now. This manual was written to overcome this knowledge-gap, it is a "do-it-yourself" manual giving a short introduction to GIS software and its applications in fishery science. The overall objective of this manual is to encourage fishery managers to use this tool (GIS) to foster the sustainable use of natural resources. There are five main sections in the manual: GIS concepts and functions and key tools provided by ArcView 3.x, Geographic coordinate system and map projections, Raster data and analysis, Regression analysis, and Application case studies. All sections are accompanied by exercises that have been designed to illustrate key applications of GIS in inland and marine fisheries management. Also, a custom-designed ArcView grid regression extension is included to show the integration of GIS with surplus production models.

World renown spatial analysts explain and demonstrate their new and insightful models and methods. The applications are in areas of societal interest such as the spread of infectious diseases, migration behaviour, and retail and agricultural location strategies. In addition, there is emphasis on the uses of new technologoies for the analysis of spatial data through the application of neural network concepts.
