She starts working in the transportation industry, where she does well. A few years later, she is back at Amazon, as the author of award-winning books and a well-ranked top reviewer. When Amazon's publishing platform experiences "issues" - fake reviews, plagiarism, "book-stuffing"- scams, and more - Hausmann holds on to her belief that Amazon is a highly efficient organization. She assumes that the company focuses on their big and expensive products instead of relatively cheap ebooks. Irritated with President Trump's economic policies and worried about the potential of a recession, Hausmann is happy to find out that Amazon opened a distribution center in her hometown and starts working there. However, to her utter surprise, she cannot find any applications of Jeff Bezos' famous leadership principles or his "Day 1"-philosophy. At times, working at the warehouse feels like working for a brand-new start-up. Things get worse during the Christmas Peak Season. By the time the Covid-crisis hits, Hausmann knows that the "issues" she sees are systemic but can no longer leave her job. A different kind of recession than the one she worried about has arrived. They survey the most up to date work in this field and present their own dynamic and spatial econometric analysis based on municipality level panel data spanning the entire Brazilian Amazon from 1970 to 1996. By observing the dynamics of land use change over such a long period the team is able to provide quantitative estimates of the long-run economic costs and benefits of both land clearing and government policies such as road building. The authors find that some government policies, such as road paving in already highly settled areas, are beneficial both for economic development and for the preservation of forest, while other policies, such as the construction of unpaved roads through virgin areas, stimulate wasteful land uses to the detriment of both economic growth and forest cover.

These data can serve as a baseline to check future changes or impacts in these rivers, which can be affected by development projects, such as highways, deforestation, mining and dams. Besides information on fish biology, the book also discusses fish uses, fisheries and its importance for riverine people, comparing these data for each fish species between sites located inside and outside conservation units. The book is an outcome of the research project ‘Linking sustainability of small-scale fisheries, fishers’ knowledge, conservation and co-management of biodiversity in large rivers of the Brazilian Amazon’, which was coordinated by the editor of this volume and funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NAS).

Based on ethnographic work conducted in several Chinese factories in the Amazon region of Brazil, whether private, partially private, or state-owned, it explores the impact of these factories on the lives of workers, specifically on wages, laws, and labor benefits, as well as the relationship between management and workers. Drawing on interviews with Brazilian workers, expatriate Chinese workers, union leaders, and factory managers, the author identifies a Chinese production model and sheds light on the implementation of externally defined work regimes that showed little engagement with the workforce in the region, together with practices that resulted in a technical or bureaucratic relationship with the worker, and the emergence of lower wages than the local average, as well as few concessions on labor benefits. This is more of a little book than a big one. Being a technologist, I tend to be concise in my writing. The printed version of this edition is about 220 pages. This may be too little for a few readers, too much for others, and hopefully, just right for the some. So, If you are looking for a 1,000-page treatise on Amazon that can be used as an example of perfect grammar in the High school English grammar class, then this book may not be the right book for you. There are several other books on Amazon which are written in perfect English but are perfectly boring. A book about Amazon can be pretty dry, so I have tried to add some humor. In my attempt to make this book funny, a few facts may have been stretched. I quote this passage from 21 Dog Years: Doing Time @ Amazon.com, written by Mike Daisey, a fellow Amazon alumnus-turned author: "Some facts were injured in the telling of this story. The truth, however, remains unharmed." That applies to this book as well. To respect the privacy of the people involved in this story, their names have been changed - with one exception.
