Book Global Trade in Services

Download or read book Global Trade in Services written by J. Bradford Jensen and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He finds that, in spite of US comparative advantage in service activities, service firms' export participation lags manufacturing firms. Jensen evaluates the impediments to services trade and finds evidence that there is considerable room for liberalization-especially among the large, fast-growing developing economies. The policy recommendations coming out of this path-breaking study are quite clear. The United States should not fear trade in services. It should be pushing aggressively for services trade liberalization. Because other advanced economies have similar comparative advantage in service, the United States should make common cause with the European Union and other advanced economies to encourage the large, fast-growing developing economies to liberalize their service sectors through multilateral negotiations in the General Agreement on Trade in Services and the Government Procurement Agreement.

Book WTO Trade in Services

Download or read book WTO Trade in Services written by Rüdiger Wolfrum and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the establishment of the WTO, trade in services became part of the world trade order. Volume 6 is dedicated to these rather recent developments. It covers the core agreement, the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) with annexes, as well as the additional instruments , which have been adopted later on to govern the liberalization in specific sectors. Those are the Understanding on Commitments in Financial Services, the Second Protocol on Financial Services, the Third Protocol on the Movement of Natural Persons, the Fourth Protocol on Basic Telecommunications and the Fifth Protocol, which contains further rules for financial services. This volume will be a valuable reference tool for the WTO community as a whole, as well as for professionals and researchers, who deal with one of the sectors concerned, e.g. financial services and telecommunications. Furthermore, it is highly relevant in view of those sectors, which are the subject of ongoing liberalization efforts or earmarked for future negotiations, namely accounting, legal services, transport, tourism, environmental services, legal and educational services.

Book Trade in Services in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Trade in Services in the Asia Pacific Region written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the tremendous growth of the service sector—including international trade in services—has outstripped that of manufacturing in many industrialized nations. As the importance of services has grown, economists have begun to focus on policy issues raised by them and have tried to understand what, if any, differences there are between production and delivery of goods and services. This volume is the first book-length attempt to analyze trade in services in the Asia-Pacific region. Contributors provide overviews of basic issues involved in studying the service sector; investigate the impact of increasing trade in services on the economies of Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong; present detailed analyses of specific service sectors (telecommunications, financial services, international tourism, and accounting); and extend our understanding of trade in services beyond the usual concept (measured in balance of payment statistics) to include indirect services and services undertaken abroad by subsidiaries and affiliates.

Book Coherence and Divergence in Services Trade Law

Download or read book Coherence and Divergence in Services Trade Law written by Rhea Tamara Hoffmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses topical questions concerning the legal framework of trade in services, and assesses how these issues are dealt with in GATS and in selected preferential trade agreements. In addition, the chapters discuss whether the differences and similarities (if any) are evidence of greater coherence or greater divergence. The book combines the individual analyses to provide a more comprehensive picture of the current law on services trade liberalisation.A quarter of a century after the conclusion of the General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS), international law on trade in services is still in a state of flux: on the one hand, countries increasingly conclude bilateral and regional trade agreements with sections on trade in services that aim at a further liberalisation of services trade. On the other, the GATS structure remains the dominant model and serves as the basis for many preferential trade agreements. In addition, new aspects such as electronic commerce, data protection and taxation are now emerging, while issues that had already manifested in the mid-1990s such as financial services regulation, labour mobility, and telecommunications continue to be problematic. Usually, the debates focus on the question of whether preferential trade agreements serve as a stepping-stone or stumbling block for trade liberalisation at the multilateral level. However, it can be assumed that rules on trade in services in preferential trade agreements will coexist with the global GATS regime for the foreseeable future. This raises the question of whether we’re currently witnessing a drive towards greater coherence or more divergence in agreements on trade in services.

Download or read book Services Trade and Growth written by Aaditya Mattoo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The competitiveness of firms in open economies is increasingly determined by access to low-cost and high-quality producer services - telecommunications, transport and distribution services, financial intermediation, etc. This paper discusses the role of services in economic growth, focusing in particular on channels through which openness to trade in services may increase productivity at the level of the economy as a whole, industries and the firm. The authors explore what recent empirical work suggests could be done to enhance comparative advantage in the production and export of services and how to design policy reforms to open services markets to greater foreign participation in a way that ensures not just greater efficiency but also greater equity in terms of access to services.

Book Asian Trade and Investment in Europe

Download or read book Asian Trade and Investment in Europe written by Prana Krishna Biswas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides deep insight into the flow of foreign direct investment from Asia to Europe. It assesses the topic of trade and investment from the reverse direction, considering Asian countries as the capital investors in the EU countries. Each chapter analyses either the international trade or investment of one or more Asian countries in correlation with one or more European states. The book analyses a significant number of countries, which are included in various economic associations, such as the Visegrad Group, the Three Seas Initiative, the European Free Trade Association, or are states from the same geopolitical region – for instance, the Iberian Peninsula, Baltic States, and Nordic countries. It examines Indian outward foreign direct investment trends in the UK before and after Brexit, based on select case studies, to emphasize the impact of Brexit, as well as to encourage trade and investment among Asian and European countries before and during COVID-19, to highlight the influence of the pandemic on the target country’s economy. The authors use a variety of analytical methods in the book, such as numerical presentations, econometric analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, an examination of time-series dynamics, the modelling of functions, and semi-structured interviews with company executives. The regional perspectives bring new and useful insights to the topic, and the case study approach allows for a wider exploration of the research questions as well as their theoretical evolution. The book provides a "big picture" for economists, researchers, business analysts, and PhD students of economics, international trade, and business.
