Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook grew out of the experiences of the teachers and students at the Read/Write/Now Adult Learning Center, a community-based literacy program in Springfield, Massachusetts. It is both a documentation of the experiences of the program and a guide for teachers. The four sections of the handbook contain a number of modules, each of which indicates type of activity, time estimate, purpose, research notes, and steps or activities. Section 1, Creating a Community of Learners, consists of a series of group activities, each requiring from 30 minutes to 2 hours, that can be used with mixed groups of students and volunteer tutors to set the climate for adult literacy classes. Section 2 includes suggestions for one-to-one goal setting conferences and for using individual learning contracts. Three short group activities for introducing the individual activities and evaluating the progress of the group are also in this section. Section 3 contains group activities to help participants and tutors examine their reading history, activities to acquaint students with what good readers do, and other reading-related activities teachers can use with individuals or groups of students. Section 4 includes activities to introduce students to the writing process and suggestions for writing, publishing, and sharing student work. Each section ends with reference notes. (KC)

Book excerpt: The pressure to drop out of adult literacy programs can be extreme for many learners, especially minority learners, trying to cope with personal, family, financial, and health problems. When learners drop out, their volunteer tutors--upon whom many programs depend--may suffer a drop in morale, or worse, may resign. These problems can be a major challenge for many programs. "Fighting to Finish" presents an innovative, effective, theory based, but tutor friendly method devised to encourage learners' persistence and perseverance, and to strengthen the training, preparation, and retention of tutors. The method employs learners' personal stories or oral histories to develop learners' literacy abilities, to problem solve, and to manage conflict. It enhances learners' determination to achieve their literacy and educational goals. Learners' efforts help tutors become more inspired and motivated, and thus more committed to the program. "Fighting to Finish" explains and illustrates how this method can be easily adapted by adult literacy programs and used by their volunteer tutors for the benefit of their learners and themselves.

Book excerpt: This handbook is designed to provide guidance particularly to inexperienced coordinators of adult literacy volunteer tutor programs or to those isolated from support personnel or structures. It is not a curriculum to be followed from beginning to end, but a selection of materials from all states in Australia. Each section contains references and illustrative examples placed throughout the text, together with their sources. Section 1 is an introduction with chapters on how to use the handbook, the place of volunteers in the development of adult literacy and basic education in Australia, and underlying principles. The five chapters in section 2 deal with management of volunteer tutor programs: volunteer tutor programs, program management, management structure models, areas of program management, and program development. Section 3 on working with volunteer tutors contains chapters on the following: policies and practices for volunteers; recruitment, selection, and training of volunteer tutors; tutor training programs; and ongoing training, support, and evaluation. Appendixes are as follows: state volunteer centers around Australia; volunteers' rights and responsibilities; selection and appointment of volunteers; criteria for selecting tutors; tutor application form; names and addresses of professional support agencies; list of bookshops and suppliers of resource materials; annotated list of 32 articles from "Good Practice in Australian Adult Literacy and Basic Education"; and acronyms.
