Download or read book A Statement of the Claims of Charles T Jackson M D To the Discovery of the Applicability of Sulphuric Ether to the Prevention of Pain in Surgical Operations Classic Reprint written by Martin Gay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Statement of the Claims of Charles T. Jackson, M.D., To the Discovery of the Applicability of Sulphuric Ether to the Prevention of Pain in Surgical Operations Two distinct claims are to be considered. The first is, the discovery by Dr. J ackson, that by sulphuric ether, a state of general unconsciousness may be safely and speedily induced, of brief duration, and followed by rapid and entire recovery from its effects. The question is not, Whether he discovered the induction of a state of insensibility danger ous, and in other respects objectionable; the insensibility produced by ether was so considered by physiologists be fore Dr. Jackson made his observations but whether he discovered that this opinion is erroneous, and that a state of unconsciousness may be produced, characterized by the qualities above described, and especially its safety. The second claim is, that Dr. J ackson made the discovery of the applicability of sulphuric ether for the prevention of pain in surgical operations; and that he caused the applica tion of it to be made in such a manner, and under such circumstances, that the credit is due to him of having made the application, in the high and true sense of the term. The second claim is the real question at issue between Dr. J ackson and Mr. Morton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The patience of the public has been long since thoroughly wearied out by the ether controversy. More than two dozen pamphlets have appeared on the subject, which, collected together (as they have been in the Boston Library), fill three respectablysized octavo volumes.* I have no intention to renew this controversy. I shall merely make such extracts from five of these pamphlets as I think appropri The following is a list of these pamphlets in the order of publication: -- 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an eminent surgeon and historian comes the “by turns fascinating and ghastly” (The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice) story of surgery’s development—from the Stone Age to the present day—blending meticulous medical research with vivid storytelling. There are not many life events that can be as simultaneously frightening and hopeful as a surgical operation. In America, tens-of-millions of major surgical procedures are performed annually, yet few of us consider the magnitude of these figures because we have such inherent confidence in surgeons. And, despite passionate debates about health care and the media’s endless fascination with surgery, most of us have no idea how the first surgeons came to be because the story of surgery has never been fully told. Now, Empire of the Scalpel elegantly reveals surgery’s fascinating evolution from its early roots in ancient Egypt to its refinement in Europe and rise to scientific dominance in the United States. From the 16th-century saga of Andreas Vesalius and his crusade to accurately describe human anatomy while appeasing the conservative clergy who clamored for his burning at the stake, to the hard-to-believe story of late-19th century surgeons’ apathy to Joseph Lister’s innovation of antisepsis and how this indifference led to thousands of unnecessary surgical deaths, Empire of the Scalpel is both a global history and a uniquely American tale. You’ll discover how in the 20th century the US achieved surgical leadership, heralded by Harvard’s Joseph Murray and his Nobel Prize–winning, seemingly impossible feat of transplanting a kidney, which ushered in a new era of transplants that continues to make procedures once thought insurmountable into achievable successes. Today, the list of possible operations is almost infinite—from knee and hip replacement to heart bypass and transplants to fat reduction and rhinoplasty—and “Rutkow has a raconteur’s touch” (San Francisco Chronicle) as he draws on his five-decade career to show us how we got here. Comprehensive, authoritative, and captivating, Empire of the Scalpel is “a fascinating, well-rendered story of how the once-impossible became a daily reality” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).
