Book excerpt: Point Molate is a natural space just north of the Richmond Bridge on the NW side of the Point San Pablo Peninsula. It is a 290 acre bio-critical landmass at the division of San Francisco and San Pablo Bays with rich human history. The Miwok and Ohlone peoples used this land for many centuries, followed by Spanish, Mexican, Chinese and Italian (brewery). Many buildings remain from the brewery as well U.S. Naval structures from a stint in the area. The 4.5 miles of shoreline include a public shoreline park, mudflats and wetlands used by shorebirds. Extensive inter tidal eel grass beds and rare coastal prairie and coastal bluff native plant communities host a wide range of native bees and other pollinates. Point Molate is bountifully rich in flora, fauna and other natural features due to irregular human presence and geographic remoteness. In fall 2020 the Richmond city council voted to sell a large portion of Point Molate to developers, which led to an insect survey to determine what will be lost.

Download or read book Making and Unmaking of the San Francisco Bay written by Gary C. Howard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 180 pages. The forces that built it began with plate tectonics and involved the collision of the Pacific and North American plates and the subduction of the Juan de Fuka plate. Key selling features: Summarizes a complex geological, geographical and ecological history Reviews how the San Francisco Bay has changed and will likely change in the future Examines the different roles and various drivers of Bay ecosystem function Includes the role of humans - both first peoples and modern populations - on the Bay Explores San Francisco Bay as an example of general bay ecolgical and environmental issues
