Book Developing and Implementing Novel Methods to Control German Cockroaches and Bed Bugs

Download or read book Developing and Implementing Novel Methods to Control German Cockroaches and Bed Bugs written by Chen Zha and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German cockroach, Blattella germanica L. (Blattodea: Blattellidae), and the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), are two common indoor pests of significant medical, economical, and social importance. In my studies, I evaluated several novel approaches for managing German cockroaches and bed bugs in apartment buildings. My researches involved both field and laboratory studies. In my first study, I determined the effect of a community-wide cockroach integrated pest management (IPM) on cockroach and pyrethroid residue reduction in a complex consisting of 258 units within 40 buildings in New Brunswick, New Jersey. At 7 mo after IPM implementation, 85% of the cockroach infestations found in the initial survey were eliminated. After 7 mo, the average number of detected pyrethroids decreased significantly from 6 ± 1 mean (± SEM) and 5 ± 1 to 2 ± 1 and 3 ± 1 in the kitchen and bedroom, respectively; the average concentrations of targeted pyrethroids residue decreased significantly from initial concentrations of 1.45 ± 0.39 and 3.31 ± 2.22 ng/cm2 to 0.29 ± 0.17 and 0.80 ± 0.61 ng/cm2 in the kitchen and bedroom, respectively. In my second study, I investigated the spatial distribution patterns of German cockroach infestations in a 188-unit high-rise apartment building before and after building-wide IPM implementation, and determined the optimum cockroach monitoring method in apartments. I found that the cockroach infestations among the apartments within the building were not independently distributed at 0 mo; infestations facing each other across the hallway, sharing walls, and sharing ceiling/floor were correlated to each other. However, infestations at 12 mo after IPM implementation were independent from each other. New infestations at 6 and 12 mo after IPM implementation were independent from existing infestations. Compared to 2 d trap placement, 14 d trap placement not only had higher trap catch, but also detected more infestations; therefore a longer period of trap placement is recommended for cockroach monitoring. In my third study, I evaluated the toxicities of various essential oils, silicone oils, and paraffin oil against bed bugs. The LD50 values of the most effective essential oil (blood orange), paraffin oil (C5-20 Paraffins), and the most effective silicone oil (Dodecamethylpentasiloxane) were 0.184 ± 0.018, 0.069 ± 0.012, and 0.036 ± 0.005 mg/bug, respectively. Direct spray of 1% water solution of 3-[Hydroxy (polyethyleneoxy) propyl] heptamethyltrisiloxane, the only silicone oil that mixes well with water, resulted in 92% bed bug mortality after 1 d. Results of this study indicated silicone oils and paraffin oil have the potential to be used as a safer alternative bed bug control materials. In my fourth study, I evaluated the effect of moxidectin, an anthelmintic drug, on bed bug feeding, development, fecundity, and mortality. High concentrations of moxidectin reduced the fecundity of bed bug females. One time feeding on rabbit blood containing 20 and 40 ng/ml moxidectin significantly reduced digestion rates and nymph molting rates. Therefore, moxidectin treatment is a promising addition to the existing bed bug management tools if its use on human can be approved in the future.

Book Biology and Management of the German Cockroach

Download or read book Biology and Management of the German Cockroach written by Changlu Wang and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a species, the German cockroach is one of the most widespread indoor urban pests worldwide. While numerous products have been developed to control their spread, German cockroaches continue to contaminate food, transmit disease and cause significant, long-term economic expense to homes, restaurants, hospitals and more. Biology and Management of the German Cockroach summarises the many advances in management technology, products, delivery systems, and basic and applied research over the past 25 years. Leading researchers explain why the German cockroach is a medically important pest and how its microbiome can provide new insights on cockroach physiology and potential novel targets for control. The authors also address the research from a practical standpoint, detailing why baits have replaced sprays as the primary method of control and how population genetic studies allow for better understanding of cockroach dispersal and population structure. Leading experts on integrated pest management (IPM) explore how studies on German cockroach control programs demonstrate the value and feasibility of IPM in urban environments. This book provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the German cockroach and will be a valuable reference for researchers, graduate students, pest management professionals, health workers and government agencies dealing with urban pests and pesticides.

Book Public Health Significance of Urban Pests

Download or read book Public Health Significance of Urban Pests written by Xavier Bonnefoy and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2008 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed important changes in ecology, climate and human behaviour that favoured the development of urban pests. Most alarmingly, urban planners now face the dramatic expansion of urban sprawl, in which city suburbs are growing into the natural habitats of ticks, rodents and other pests. Also, many city managers now erroneously assume that pest-borne diseases are relics of the past. All these changes make timely a new analysis of the direct and indirect effects of present-day urban pests on health. Such an analysis should lead to the development of strategies to manage them and reduce the risk of exposure. To this end, WHO invited international experts in various fields - pests, pest-related diseases and pest management - to provide evidence on which to base policies. These experts identified the public health risk posed by various pests and appropriate measures to prevent and control them. This book presents their conclusions and formulates policy options for all levels of decision-making to manage pests and pest-related diseases in the future. [Ed.]

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted with Bedbugs, Cimex lectularius German cockroaches, Blatella germanica and American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana strains obtained in Izmir Turkey during 1966-67 to determine their resistance to various concentrations of diazinon, malathion and dieldrin. Results indicate that 0.5% diazinon should control bedbugs and 0.05% diazinon should control German cockroaches and 3.0% malathion should control American cockroaches. For combined German and American cockroach infestations we recommend 3.0% malathion in the absence of American/diazinon data.

Book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects

Download or read book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects written by Mike Lehane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.
