Book Characterisation of Neonicotinoid Resistance in the Cotton Aphid Aphis Gossypii from Australian Cotton

Download or read book Characterisation of Neonicotinoid Resistance in the Cotton Aphid Aphis Gossypii from Australian Cotton written by Kate L. Langfield and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a highly polyphagous pest that inflicts serious damage to a broad range of agricultural, horticultural and greenhouse crops. In Australia, A. gossypii is a significant pest of cotton and is difficult to control with insecticides because of its high propensity to develop resistance. Neonicotinoids are among the most effective insecticides used to control A. gossypii but the most recent detection of resistance threatens their longevity. Consequently, I aimed to restore neonicotinoid efficacy against A. gossypii through elucidation of underlying resistance mechanism(s). Bioassay was used to measure thiamethoxam (neonicotinoid) response in three field strains collected from commercial cotton. A second trial investigated the use of phorate (an organophosphate) as an alternative pre-germination treatment to thiamethoxam. PCR-Sequencing was employed to identify if mutation R81T known to confer resistance to neonicotinoid compounds was present in Australian A. gossypii. High-throughput sequencing of the A. gossypii transcriptome found differences in gene expression associated wit hthiamethoxam resistance. Two transcripts involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics (putatively annotated as cytochrome p450 gene 6K1-like) were found differentially expressed between resistant and suceptible strains. Transcript expression was further validated by qRT-PCR and showed a similar tendency in upregulation of expression. As such I identified this gene as the strongest candidate for thiamethoxam resistant A. gossypii. This study has generated a comprehensive transcriptome resource for A. gossypii that has characterised the expression of numerous important transcripts encoding proteins involved in insecticide resistance. Consequently, my study will contribute to future research relating to molecular characterization of insecticide resistance mechanisms in A. gossypii and other insect pests.

Book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition

Download or read book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition written by Helmut F van Emden and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are among the major global pest groups, causing serious economic damage to many food and commodity crops in most parts of the world. This revision and update of the well-received first edition published ten years ago reflects the expansion of research in genomics, endosymbionts and semiochemicals, as well as the shift from control of aphids with insecticides to a more integrated approach imposed by increasing resistance in the aphids and government restrictions on pesticides. The book remains a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work on the biology of aphids, the various methods of controlling them and the progress of integrated pest management as illustrated by ten case histories.

Book Bioassays with Arthropods

Download or read book Bioassays with Arthropods written by Jacqueline L. Robertson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a statistics book for bioassays written by a statistician. Next, imagine a statistics book for bioassays written for a layman. Bioassays with Arthropods, Third Edition offers the best of both worlds by translating the terse, precise language of the statistician into language used by the laboratory scientist. The book explains the statistical basis and analysis for each kind of quantal response bioassay in just the right amount of detail. The first two editions were a great reference for designing, conducting, and interpreting bioassays: this completely revised and updated third edition will also train the laboratory scientist to be an expert in estimation of dose response curves. New in the Third Edition: Introduces four new Windows and Apple-based computer programs (PoloJR, OptiDose, PoloMixture and PoloMulti) for the analyses of binary and multiple response analyses, respectively Replaces out-of-date GLIM examples with R program samples Includes a new chapter, Population Toxicology, and takes a systems approach to bioassays Expands the coverage of invasive species and quarantine statistics Building on the foundation set by the much-cited first two editions, the authors clearly delineate applications and ideas that are exceptionally challenging for those not already familiar with their use. They lead you through the methods with such ease and organization, that you suddenly find yourself readily able to apply concepts that you never thought you would understand. To order the PoloSuite computer software described in Bioassays with Arthropods, Third Edition, use the order form found at www.leora-software.com or contact the LeOra Software Company at [email protected].

Book Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods

Download or read book Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods written by Richard Roush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce E. Tabashnik and Richard T. Roush Pesticide resistance is an increasingly urgent worldwide problem. Resistance to one or more pesticides has been documented in more than 440 species of insects and mites. Resistance in vectors of human dise8se, particularly malaria-transmit ting mosquitoes, is a serious threat to public health in many nations. Agricultural productivity is jeopardized because of widespread resistance in crop and livestock pests. Serious resistance problems are also evident in pests of the urban environ ment, most notably cockroaches. Better understanding of pesticide resistance is needed to devise techniques for managing resistance (Le. , slowing, preventing, or reversing development of resistance in pests and promoting it in beneficial natural enemies). At the same time, resistance is a dramatic example of evolution. Knowledge of resistance can thus provide fundamental insights into evolution, genetics, physiology, and ecology. Resistance management can help to reduce the harmful effects of pesticides by decreasing rates of pesticide use and prolonging the efficacy of environmentally safe pesticides. In response to resistance problems, the concentration or frequency of pesticide applications is often increased. Effective resistance management would reduce this type of increased pesticide use. Improved monitoring of resis tance would also decrease the number of ineffective pesticide applications that are made when a resistance problem exists but has not been diagnosed. Resistance often leads to replacement of one pesticide with another that is more expensive and less compatible with alternative controls.

Book Aphids on the World s Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs 2 Volume Set

Download or read book Aphids on the World s Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs 2 Volume Set written by R. L. Blackman and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2007-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are well-known as pests of agriculture, horticulture and forestry, but they are also one of the most biologically interesting groups of plant-feeding insects, and thus have attracted the attention of biologists in many research fields such as ecology, biodiversity, physiology, behaviour and genetics. Following the successful format of previous books on the world's aphids by the same authors, these two volumes provide a comprehensive species-by-species account of the aphids on the world's herbaceous plants and shrubs. They can be used not only as an identification guide and information source for entomologists and taxonomists throughout the world, but also as a unique database for studies of biodiversity and insect-plant relationships. In all, 3120 aphid species in 340 genera are covered, feeding on 2150 genera of host plants. Volume 1 features comprehensive host lists and keys to the aphids colonizing each plant genus. This information is supplemented in Volume 2 by a systematic account of all the aphid species, which provides information on their appearance in life, host range, geographical distribution and life cycles. There are 357 original line drawings, 252 photographs of slide-mounted specimens and 1000 references. Aphids on the World's Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs is the culmination of many years of work by two leading specialists and provides an essential research tool and standard reference work for entomologists in universities and research institutes throughout the world.

Book Insecticide Resistance

Download or read book Insecticide Resistance written by Ian Denholm and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1999 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resistance by insects and other arthropod pests to chemically-based control strategies is a major problem in crop protection as well as in medical and veterinary entomology. For every new approach to pest control, it seems that resistance is likely to develop. This book addresses these topical issues and is based on a Discussion Meeting held at the Royal Society, London, in April 1998. Contributors include scientists from leading research groups in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. The book is essential reading for agricultural, medical and veterinary entomologists concerned with pest management.
