Book Insect Pests and Diseases of the Pecan Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Pests and Diseases of the Pecan Classic Reprint written by Jerry A. Payne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Pests and Diseases of the Pecan But it is often a waste of time and money to apply insect and disease control measures to poor varieties or to trees that lack vigor because of inadequate soil fertility, overcrowding, or general neglect. To produce profitable crops, the pecan grower must adhere to cultural practices that pro mote tree vigor, stimulate fruiting, and minimize the damage caused by pests. For example, trees weakened by inadequate nitrogen fertilization and rank weed growth are more susceptible to damage by some leaf-spotting fungi. Conversely, too much nitrogen, which promotes season-long growth, can produce tender shoots that are highly susceptible to the scab fungus. Many disease organisms thrive under conditions that favor summer growth flushes. Practices that allow good air circulation such as wide spacing of trees, removal of lower limbs, and maintenance of low ground cover and hedgerows in summer facilitate disease and insect control. Ground sanitation is partially effective against most fungus diseases because the overwintering stage can often be eliminated. Ground trash such as broken limbs, shucks, and insect-infested nuts should be removed from the grove during the winter. Disking to turn under trash is not ad visable unless no other means of debris disposal is available. (disking can spread crown gall, and the resulting root pruning can lead to nutrient deficiencies, especially rosette.) This publication is not concerned with specific chemical control; the grower should refer to Stateextension service bulletins, which are updated often, or contact local extension service agents. Rather, our objective is to describe the biology of the insects and diseases and their symptoms in the grove and to outline general control measures. Book The Obscure Scale on the Pecan and Its Control Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Obscure Scale on the Pecan and Its Control Classic Reprint written by Howard Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Obscure Scale on the Pecan and Its Control The Obscure scale is an important pest of all varieties Of pecans throughout a large portion Of the pecan belt. It attacks all parts Of the tree proper, developing first on the lower, inner portions of the trees and spreading gradually outward and upward. Limbs up to 3 inches in diameter are most frequently killed by its attacks. The greatest injury results from the gradual killing Of branches and the weakening of infested trees, which renders them more subject to attack by borers, other insects, and diseases. Eggs are first extruded between the middle of May and early in June, and crawlers Can be found a few days later. Both eggs and crawlers are present in large numbers throughout June and until the middle Of July, after which they gradually-decrease in numbers until by the first of August only a few remain. The first crawlers settle under Old scale covers, and those that emerge from beneath the cover of the parent scale settle within a short time and usually not far away. They gradually increase in size, and their covers assume the color Of the surface on which they 'are resting. Most of the Winter is passed by the male scale in the second larval stage and by the female in the stage preparatory to the second molt. Development is resumed late in the winter, and most specimens reach the adult stage by the middle of April, adult males emerging as the females are completing the final molt. Mating takes place at once and eggs are soon formed. There is but a single generation each year. Parasites, predators, and diseases exert a considerable influence in reducing the numbers of this scale, and in some instances appear to hold infestations in check without the aid of artificial control measures, though artificial control is usually necessary. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects and Diseases of Trees in the South This publication has been prepared to assist forest managers and home-owners in identifying pests of southern trees. The insects and diseases discussed are thet more common ones attacking forest and ornamental trees. Prompt identification and treatment of these pests may mean the difference between losing or saving a valuable shade tree. Underlying all successful forest and ornamental pest control efforts, however, is the necessity to keep trees in a healthy, vigorous condition. Chemical supression recommendations are not included in this publication. For pesticide information contact the local State or Federal extension forester, entomologist, or pathologist.
