Book excerpt: Dependence upon neurotoxic chemicals as a means to control pest insects has lead to several problems: environmental hazards associated with broad-spectrum pesticides, negative impacts on non-target organisms such as natural enemies and pollinators, and the development of resistance to these chemicals among target species. Researchers have sought al

Book Ecofriendly Pest Management for Food Security

Download or read book Ecofriendly Pest Management for Food Security written by Omkar and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecofriendly Pest Management for Food Security explores the broad range of opportunity and challenges afforded by Integrated Pest Management systems. The book focuses on the insect resistance that has developed as a result of pest control chemicals, and how new methods of environmentally complementary pest control can be used to suppress harmful organisms while protecting the soil, plants, and air around them. As the world’s population continues its rapid increase, this book addresses the production of cereals, vegetables, fruits, and other foods and their subsequent demand increase. Traditional means of food crop production face proven limitations and increasing research is turning to alternative means of crop growth and protection. Addresses environmentally focused pest control with specific attention to its role in food security and sustainability. Includes a range of pest management methods, from natural enemies to biomolecules. Written by experts with extensive real-world experience.

Book Bioactive Compounds from Plants

Download or read book Bioactive Compounds from Plants written by Derek J. Chadwick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Useful throughout history for their medical as well as other benefits, plant-derived compounds have gained particular importance recently, due to environmental factors. The isolation and characterization of plant products, the identification of their role in the plant, and ways of synthesizing identical compounds or more potent analogues are covered. Also includes methods of culturing plant tissues and genetic engineering as a means of increasing the yield of desired substances from plants. Special emphasis is placed on plants previously unknown to Western scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book Gathers Together Informations From Various Known Sources And From Knowledges Accumulated Through The Practices Of Crop Husbandry Presented In Various Publications As Historical Anecdotes And Reviews. It Covers Topics Like The Genesis Of Pest Problems Of Crops, Characteristics Of Inflicting Injury To The Crops By Insects, Methods Of Assessment Of Level Of Infestation And Intent Of Damage And Finally Strategies To Minimise The Avoidable Loss Due To Pest Infestation. Further To Accommodate The Changing Concepts In Dealing With Pest Problems Emphasis Has Also Been Given On The Topics Like Ecology And Agroecosystem, Advantages And Limitations Of Unilateral Adoption Of Any Of The Different Pest Control Tactics And Ultimately How The Different Methods Can Be Integrated To Offset The Undesirable Effects As Insecticidal Method Of Pest Control Is Commonly Practised For Convenience And Immediate Results Brief Accounts Of Insecticides And Application Equipments, Various Facets Of Application Technology And Passage Of These Undesirable Chemicals To Non-Target Areas Have Been Included Which Are Relevant From The Point Of View Of Environmental Hazards This Compendium Has Been Designed In The Form Of Text Book For Students Of Entomology And Will Also Serve As A Companion Hand Book For All Engaged In Insect Control And Studies.

Book Experimental Techniques in Host Plant Resistance

Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Host Plant Resistance written by Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest land-plants evolved around 450 million years ago from aquatic plants devoid of vascular systems. The diversification of flowering plants (angiosperms) during the Cretaceous period is associated with speciation in insects. Early insect herbivores were mandibulate, but the evolution of vascular plants led to the co-evolution of other forms of herbivory, such as leaf feeding, sap-sucking, leaf mining, tissue borer, gall forming and nectar-feeding. Plant defense against biotic stress is an adaptive evolution by plants to increase their fitness. Plants use a variety of strategies to defend against damage caused by herbivores. Plant defense mechanisms are either inbuilt or induced. Inbuilt mechanisms are always present within the plant, while induced defenses are produced or mobilized to the site where a plant is injured. Induced defense mechanisms include morphological, physiological changes and production of secondary metabolites. Host plant resistance (HPR) is one of the eco-friendly methods of pest management. It protects the crop by making it less suitable or tolerant to the pest. While books on theoretical aspects of HPR are available, an exclusive book on the practical aspects is lacking. There is a wide gap between the theory and the experimental procedures required for conducting studies on plant resistance for the post graduate students and young researchers. A dire need for a book on practical aspects was strongly felt. Initially a practical manual was prepared which eventually evolved into the present book. We hope this book provides information on major aspects of screening crop germplasm, sampling techniques, genetic and biochemical basis of HPR, behavioural studies on pheromone and plant volatiles, and some of the recent approaches in HPR. Further, the references provide the scientific articles and books as additional information to readers and workers alike.

Book Synthesis of Pesticides Chemical Structure and Biological Activity Natural Products with Biological Activity

Download or read book Synthesis of Pesticides Chemical Structure and Biological Activity Natural Products with Biological Activity written by H. Geissbühler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Pesticide Science, Part 2: Synthesis of Pesticides, Chemical Structure and Biological Activity, Natural Products with Biological Activity is a collection of papers presented at the Fourth International Congress of Pesticide Chemistry, held in Zurich, Switzerland on July 24-28, 1978. This book is composed of forty eight chapters, and begins with the synthesis of pesticides. The succeeding chapters deal with heterocyclic synthesis by rearrangement, synthesis and transformations of nitrogen and sulphurcontaining bicyclic heterocyclic systems. These topics are followed by discussions on synthesis of bmc-analogous n-heterocycles from 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-, and 1,5- diamines. Other chapters describe the synthesis and herbicidal activity of 4-acylpyrazole derivatives, the synthesis and properties of plant growth regulators, the carboxyphenyl derivatives of five and six membered heterocycles and potential phosphorus-containing intermediates for the synthesis of pesticides. The final chapters consider the influence of antagonistic fungi on the spore-formation of rust fungi. This book will prove useful to agriculturists and organic chemists.
