Book excerpt: Although Scots-Irish immigrants settled this area in the 1740s, completion of a rail spur from Hillsborough to a point 1 mile west of Chapel Hill in 1882 was the critical event that spawned Carrboro. The rail line was built to transport ore from an iron mine that closed after a few years, but the spur provided a vital means to transport local goods to market. Thomas Lloyd realized the commercial potential and built a gristmill and cotton gin beside the rail head in 1883. These enterprises prospered, and in 1898 Lloyd built the Alberta Cotton Mill, establishing the mill town identity that persists today. In the century since its founding, Carrboro has evolved from mill town to a progressive and diverse community. Images of America: Carrboro provides a visual history of the transition of Carrboro from humble agrarian origins to an important center for innovation in the performing arts.

Book Always a Blessing in the End

Download or read book Always a Blessing in the End written by Paulette Ivy Harris and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Always a Blessing in the End is a two-fold exploration of the African American experience in the United States within the genre of a family history. After addressing the development of the African slave trade, it highlights the attitudes and accomplishments in the arenas of slavery and equality for black Americans during each presidential administration from Washington to Carter. Paulette Ivy Harris then presents her genealogies of four lineages, namely the Ivys, the Baileys, Goldsons, and the Thompsons. She takes the reader on an empathetic sojourn through the lives of the ancestors she finds long buried in Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri. Her ancestors seem to resurrect from the dust of their internment and take on flesh to live again between the pages. By incorporating genealogical details about her ancestors into her research of African American history, she reconstructs the lives they endured. She discovers that the Christian faith of her ancestors was unfailingly rewarded with what truly mattered. Those who enjoy reading family histories will learn about the struggles of several generations. Beginners and seasoned family history sleuths will be able to glean sources from Always a Blessing in the End to help them with their own ancestry puzzle.

Book Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane

Download or read book Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane written by Amanda Cook Gilbert and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious work chronicles 250 years of the Cromartie family genealogical history. Included in the index of nearly fifty thousand names are the current generations, and all of those preceding, which trace ancestry to our family patriarch, William Cromartie, who was born in 1731 in Orkney, Scotland, and his second wife, Ruhamah Doane, who was born in 1745. Arriving in America in 1758, William Cromartie settled and developed a plantation on South River, a tributary of the Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina. On April 2, 1766, William married Ruhamah Doane, a fifth-generation descendant of a Mayflower passenger to Plymouth, Stephen Hopkins. If Cromartie is your last name or that of one of your blood relatives, it is almost certain that you can trace your ancestry to one of the thirteen children of William Cromartie, his first wife, and Ruhamah Doane, who became the founding ancestors of our Cromartie family in America: William, Jr, James, Thankful, Elizabeth, Hannah Ruhamah, Alexander, John, Margaret Nancy, Mary, Catherine, Jean, Peter Patrick, and Ann E. Cromartie. These four volumes hold an account of the descent of each of these first-generation Cromarties in America, including personal anecdotes, photographs, copies of family bibles, wills, and other historical documents. Their pages hold a personal record of our ancestors and where you belong in the Cromartie family tree.
