Book The Royal Inscriptions of Esarhaddon King of Assyria 680 669 BC

Download or read book The Royal Inscriptions of Esarhaddon King of Assyria 680 669 BC written by Erle Leichty and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Inscription of Esarhaddon, King of Assyria (680–669 BC) is the inaugural volume of the Royal Inscriptions of the Neo-Assyrian Period Project. The volume provides reliable, up-to-date editions of all of the known royal inscriptions of Esarhaddon, a son of Sennacherib who ruled Assyria for twelve years (680–669 BC). Editions of 143 firmly identifiable texts (which mostly describe successful battles and the completion of building projects, all done ad maiorem gloriam deorum), 29 poorly preserved late Neo-Assyrian inscriptions that may be attributed to him, and 10 inscriptions commissioned by his mother Naqia (Zakutu) and his wife Esharra-hammat are included. To make this corpus more user-friendly to both specialist and laymen, each text edition (with its English translation) is supplied with a brief introduction containing general information, a catalogue containing basic information about all exemplars, a commentary containing further technical information and notes, and a comprehensive bibliography (arranged chronologically from earliest to latest). The volume also includes: (1) a general introduction to the reign of Esarhaddon, the corpus of inscriptions, previous studies, and dating and chronology; (2) translations of the relevant passages of three Mesopotamian chronicles; (3) 19 photographs of objects inscribed with texts of Esarhaddon; (4) indexes of museum and excavation numbers and selected publications; and (5) indexes of proper names (Personal Names; Geographic, Ethnic, and Tribal Names; Divine, Planet, and Star Names; Gate, Palace, Temple, and Wall Names; and Object Names). The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing transliterations of selected inscriptions arranged in a ‘musical score’ format. The Royal Inscriptions of the Neo-Assyrian Period (RINAP) series will present up-to-date editions of the royal inscriptions of a number of late Neo-Assyrian rulers, beginning with Tiglath-pileser III (744–727 BC). This new series is modeled on the publications of the now-defunct Royal Inscriptions of Mesopotamia (RIM) series and will carry on where its RIMA (Royal Inscriptions of Mesopotamia, Assyrian Periods) publications ended. The project is under the direction of G. Frame (University of Pennsylvania) and is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Pastoral Care written by Pope Gregory I and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Care, or The Book of the Pastoral Rule, is a treatise on the responsibilities of the clergy written by Pope Gregory I in which he contrasted the role of bishops as pastors of their flock with their position as nobles of the church: the definitive statement of the nature of the episcopal office. Gregory enjoined parish priests to possess strict personal, intellectual and moral standards which were considered, in certain quarters, to be unrealistic and beyond ordinary capacities. The influence of the book, however, was vast and became one of the most influential works on the topic ever written. It was translated and distributed to every bishop within the Byzantine Empire.

Book The Cuneiform Inscriptions and the Old Testament Vol 2

Download or read book The Cuneiform Inscriptions and the Old Testament Vol 2 written by Eberhard Schrader and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cuneiform Inscriptions and the Old Testament, Vol. 2: Translated From the Second Enlarged German Edition I have once more the pleasure of acknowledging the ever ready and helpful kindness Of Prof. Schrader in pre paring this volume for the press. The English edition is enriched by his own recent brilliant combinations on the field Of early Babylonian History whereby he arrives at the identification of the Biblical Amraphel with king Hammu rabi. A translation of an important Excursus in his own monograph, read before the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin, will be found in the Notes and Addenda at the close of this volume. Dr. Schrader has moreover added valuable Appendices on Assyriological literature as well as On the Moods and Tenses of the Assyrian verb. This edition also owes much to Mr. Pinches of the British Museum whose great erudition and ready command of cuneiform literature are at the service Of every inquirer. My indebtedness to him has been duly notified in each case. A word of grateful acknowledgment is due for the kindly welcome accorded to the first volume. Among the nume rous friendly notices I would especially mention the long and able review signed 'e', which appeared in the 'expositor' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
