Download or read book Memorials of the Dead in Boston written by Thomas Bridgman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of the Dead in Boston: Containing an Exact Transcript From Inscriptions, Epitaphs and Records on the Monuments and Tombstones in Copp's Hill Burying Ground, in the City of Boston Street as far as Salem Street. Eastward from the church, a gradual descent led to the North Battery, which was considered the bottom of the hill. South-easterly the slope was still more gradual, and terminated at the foot of the North Square, leaving a knoll on the right, where at present stands the meeting-house of the Second Church. Copp's Hill rose gradually from Hudson's Point, so called from William Hudson, who owned it in 1635. This point and. Part of the hill were once the property of Joshua Gee, and Gee'st noted shipyard lay at the foot of the hill northerly, a short dis tance from his house in Prince Street. It was afterwards used for a fortification, and called the North Battery. On the hill, Admiral Graves raised a battery of six guns and howitzers, and opened a fire on the American works in Charlestown, on the 17th of June, 1775. Charlestown was set on fire by bomb shells thrown from this height, and by a body Of marines, who landed in the easterly part Of that town from the Somerset frigate. The scene has been described by writers with terrific splendor, while the battle of Bunker Hill was kindling that blaze of glory which finally triumphed in the deliverance of an oppressed people, and in the foundation of a great empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marlborough, Massachusetts, Burial Ground Inscriptions: Old Common, Spring Hill, and Brigham Cemeteries The printing of the Vital Records, the Burial Ground Inscriptions, and the Proprietors Records of Marlborough is a realization in small part of a plan formed in 1885 to copy and print the records of several of the old Massachusetts Towns in the pathway of the westward emigration from the coast from 1635 to 1660. Some of the details of this plan were discussed at length in certain quarters, and with competent authorities, but I received little encouragement to proceed in an undertaking which seemed to the majority of those gentlemen to be attended with insurmountable difficulties. I gratefully remember, however, that there were two or three who took the opposite view, and who offered assistance. Four of the towns contemplated in the project were Water-town, Concord, Sudbury and Marlborough, and I felt assured that even the announcement of the beginning of work in these important places would give an impetus to record publication in other parts of the State, which was then my principal object. During the next three years the enterprise was under consideration, but various other interests interposed to delay it, and before arrangements could be perfected I unexpectedly found myself involved in the undertaking of printing the second series of the Worcester Records, from which, in consequence of certain unforeseen and singular difficulties, I was not wholly freed until 1898. During the period 1876-1882 I had completed the Worcester Records to 1783, including the Proprietors Book, and also the Records of the Worcester County Court of General Sessions from 1731 to 1737, the latter being, I believe, the first example of printed county records in Massachusetts. Considerable activity in record work was manifested in various places in the State from 1880 to 1890, mostly through individual effort. Dr. Samuel A. Book The American Resting Place

Download or read book The American Resting Place written by Marilyn Yalom and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated cultural history of America through the lens of its gravestones and burial practices—featuring eighty black-and-white photographs. In The American Resting Place, cultural historian Marilyn Yalom and her son, photographer Reid Yalom, visit more than 250 cemeteries across the United States. Following a coast-to-coast trajectory that mirrors the historical pattern of American migration, their destinations highlight America’s cultural and ethnic diversity as well as the evolution of burials rites over the centuries. Yalom’s incisive reading of gravestone inscriptions reveals changing ideas about death and personal identity, as well as how class and gender play out in stone. Rich particulars include the story of one seventeenth-century Bostonian who amassed a thousand pairs of gloves in his funeral-going lifetime, the unique burial rites and funerary symbols found in today’s Native American cultures, and a “lost” Czech community brought uncannily to life in Chicago’s Bohemian National Columbarium. From fascinating past to startling future—DVDs embedded in tombstones, “green” burials, and “the new aesthetic of death”—The American Resting Place is the definitive history of the American cemetery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In colonial America, the system of "warning out" was distinctive to New England, a way for a community to regulate those to whom it would extend welfare. Robert Love's Warnings animates this nearly forgotten aspect of colonial life, richly detailing the moral and legal basis of the practice and the religious and humanistic vision of those who enforced it. Historians Cornelia H. Dayton and Sharon V. Salinger follow one otherwise obscure town clerk, Robert Love, as he walked through Boston's streets to tell sojourners, "in His Majesty's Name," that they were warned to depart the town in fourteen days. This declaration meant not that newcomers literally had to leave, but that they could not claim legal settlement or rely on town poor relief. Warned youths and adults could reside, work, marry, or buy a house in the city. If they became needy, their relief was paid for by the province treasurer. Warning thus functioned as a registration system, encouraging the flow of labor and protecting town coffers. Between 1765 and 1774, Robert Love warned four thousand itinerants, including youthful migrant workers, demobilized British soldiers, recently exiled Acadians, and women following the redcoats who occupied Boston in 1768. Appointed warner at age sixty-eight owing to his unusual capacity for remembering faces, Love kept meticulous records of the sojourners he spoke to, including where they lodged and whether they were lame, ragged, drunk, impudent, homeless, or begging. Through these documents, Dayton and Salinger reconstruct the biographies of travelers, exploring why so many people were on the move throughout the British Atlantic and why they came to Boston. With a fresh interpretation of the role that warning played in Boston's civic structure and street life, Robert Love's Warnings reveals the complex legal, social, and political landscape of New England in the decade before the Revolution.
