Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave goodbye to the American dream. Just a heartbeat into the future, America is being dragged to its knees by social unrest and economic inequality. The furious pace of technological advancement has made medicine capable of near-miracles but has also enabled the widespread displacement of workers by automated systems. As unemployment and poverty levels rise to dangerous heights, those with fortunes to lose are pitted against those with nothing left. The threat of rebellion looms greater every day. When a chance meeting in a Washington, D.C., slum leads journalist Richard LaPointe to a heinous discovery, he and his wife, internationally respected physician and medical technologist Allie MacKay, start down a path that exposes just how far those in power will go to protect themselves from the impending crisis. When their daughter, Skyie, an online video activist sensation, gets involved after pulling off a spectacular protest stunt, they are all plunged into a world in which no one is safe. What they find behind the curtain is not an America made great again. It is an empire in ruin.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Gothic Fiction

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Gothic Fiction written by Jerrold E. Hogle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-29 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gothic as a form of fiction-making has played a major role in Western culture since the late eighteenth century. In this volume, fourteen world-class experts on the Gothic provide thorough and revealing accounts of this haunting-to-horrifying type of fiction from the 1760s (the decade of The Castle of Otranto, the first so-called 'Gothic story') to the end of the twentieth century (an era haunted by filmed and computerized Gothic simulations). Along the way, these essays explore the connections of Gothic fictions to political and industrial revolutions, the realistic novel, the theatre, Romantic and post-Romantic poetry, nationalism and racism from Europe to America, colonized and post-colonial populations, the rise of film and other visual technologies, the struggles between 'high' and 'popular' culture, changing psychological attitudes towards human identity, gender and sexuality, and the obscure lines between life and death, sanity and madness. The volume also includes a chronology and guides to further reading.

Book excerpt: When the most successful film studio in Hollywood is racked with failed projects, financial reversals and bizarre accidents, rumors swirl that legendary long-time studio head Nero is on the chopping block. The notorious and increasingly erratic Nero engineers a pre-emptive strike against the studio’s parent company by staging a star-studded film shoot in the desert and then orchestrating a series of increasingly traumatic accidents—prematurely triggered pyrotechnic effects, blanks switched out for live ammo, and worse—guaranteed to make the project fail so lethally that it brings down the very studio that he created. The cast and crew settle into their temporary desert home blissfully unaware that the entire location sits on top of a radioactive waste dump. As the film’s magnetic lead actor Tony Billings scrounges for drugs and cheap thrills, he is stalked by an obsessive entertainment journalist, Frederick M Barclay, who pursues his ultimate objective to once and for all lay open his subject in the most gruesome possible way.

Book Chokepoint Capitalism

Download or read book Chokepoint Capitalism written by Rebecca Giblin and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A call to action for the creative class and labor movement to rally against the power of Big Tech and Big Media Corporate concentration has breached the stratosphere, as have corporate profits. An ever-expanding constellation of industries are now monopolies (where sellers have excessive power over buyers) or monopsonies (where buyers hold the whip hand over sellers)—or both. In Chokepoint Capitalism, scholar Rebecca Giblin and writer and activist Cory Doctorow argue we’re in a new era of “chokepoint capitalism,” with exploitative businesses creating insurmountable barriers to competition that enable them to capture value that should rightfully go to others. All workers are weakened by this, but the problem is especially well-illustrated by the plight of creative workers. From Amazon’s use of digital rights management and bundling to radically change the economics of book publishing, to Google and Facebook’s siphoning away of ad revenues from news media, and the Big Three record labels’ use of inordinately long contracts to up their own margins at the cost of artists, chokepoints are everywhere. By analyzing book publishing and news, live music and music streaming, screenwriting, radio and more, Giblin and Doctorow deftly show how powerful corporations construct “anti-competitive flywheels” designed to lock in users and suppliers, make their markets hostile to new entrants, and then force workers and suppliers to accept unfairly low prices. In the book’s second half, Giblin and Doctorow then explain how to batter through those chokepoints, with tools ranging from transparency rights to collective action and ownership, radical interoperability, contract terminations, job guarantees, and minimum wages for creative work. Chokepoint Capitalism is a call to workers of all sectors to unite to help smash these chokepoints and take back the power and profit that’s being heisted away—before it’s too late.

Book excerpt: In Obscure Narrative, we come across psychosocial fragments that fuel the mental combustion responsible for the feelings and sensations that blind our most subtle perceptions, transforming us into nefarious and underhanded actors, acting on an immense stage called life, which transits through a fine line between the genius and the execrable; however, the author warns that these poems may cause discomfort in sensitive reactionary people.
