Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR NONFICTION • An acclaimed journalist sets a new standard for bold, in-depth reporting in this first-hand account of life inside the penal system at Sing Sing. “Newjack is about as good as it gets—by turns gripping, funny, frightening, and sad.” —The Washington Post Book World When Ted Conover’s request to shadow a recruit at the New York State Corrections Officer Academy was denied, he decided to apply for a job as a prison officer himself. The result is an unprecedented work of eyewitness journalism: the account of Conover's year-long passage into storied Sing Sing prison as a rookie guard, or "newjack." As he struggles to become a good officer, Conover angers inmates, dodges blows, and attempts, in the face of overwhelming odds, to balance decency with toughness. Through his insights into the harsh culture of prison, the grueling and demeaning working conditions of the officers, and the unexpected ways the job encroaches on his own family life, we begin to see how our burgeoning prison system brutalizes everyone connected with it. An intimate portrait of a world few readers have ever experienced, Newjack is a haunting journey into a dark undercurrent of American life.

Book excerpt: Jai l Time, What you need to know... ...Before you go to federal pr i son Jail Time was a book I never wanted to write. Federal Prison was a place I never wanted to be. Sometimes things just happen that you really can't explain or even know why they happened. They just do. Life is funny that way- one day you are on top of the world and the next day you're in a bottomless pit-you think. But later you discover that the pit's bottom is even deeper. There are many challenges facing those individuals entering federal prison. These challenges are not easy, but they are controllable. Controllable, if you have the proper knowledge, resources, and motivation. The motivation is to get home to your family as soon as possible. This is where Jail Time can help. Jail Time offers solutions to the problems that men and women facing federal incarceration are confronted with. Jail Time provides a wealth of information to help families get through their ordeal together and get the offender back home in the shortest possible amount of time. Born into an impoverished and broken family in Ohio, Michael Frantz studied diligently and graduated with honors from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He continued his studies and earned a post graduate degree from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy with highest honors. With little or no money he started his own home medical equipment business in 1980 and grew it in sales to over $7,000,000 a year. At the height of his business he had six locations in five different Ohio cities. In October of 2002 the FBI raided all six of his stores in what was to become a two year legal and emotional nightmare. They alleged Medicare and tax fraud. In 2004 Mr. Frantz reluctantly accepted a plea agreement and was eventually sentenced in July of 2005 to 51 months in the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) in Miami, Florida. He spent nearly 16 months there. Later he was transferred to the adjacent low security Federal Correctional Institution (FCI). In 2008, he won his appeal and was released from federal prison on July 18, 2008 after serving nearly 36 months in federal confinement. This, as he likes to say, was a life and career changing experience.

Download or read book Living with Desistance written by David Honeywell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new and distinctive contribution to the desistance literature, Dr David Honeywell draws on his own lived experience to consider his route through youth delinquency and prison to a life away from crime through education, and ultimately towards academia. Drawing on perspectives from criminology, sociology and psychology, this autoethnography offers a unique perspective to the desistance process and to social identity. Honeywell considers possible convergences as well as marked differences between the desistance and the convict criminology literatures. While desistance scholars have often emphasised the need for ex-offenders to cast off their criminal identities, Honeywell demonstrates how his own trajectory has involved him embracing this identity to develop an academic career. In doing so, this book emphasises the complexity of the desistance process, and the role of stigma, and also of hope. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, psychology and those interested in the lived experience of desistance.

Download or read book Prison Puzzle Pieces 2 written by Dave Basham and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PRISON PUZZLE PIECES 2 (the second of a three volume series) is a non-fiction account of a corrections officer working in Stillwater Prison in Minnesota after he stopped traveling the country performing standup comedy and improv. Through examples, explanations and experiences, he explains how the entire system works, piece by piece, by presenting hundreds of events that occurred in that dysfunctional little city contained within those walls and razor ribbon. His unique perspectives earned him the respect of inmates and officers; on the other hand his life was in constant danger from other inmates and officers for him doing his job ethically. These books are presented from the author’s unique perspective. They contain some historic background and events pertaining to that prison; such as the infamous Younger Brothers. There is no way to explain every aspect of this restricted society, but these books come close. Many of the things that go on in the prison that have life and death consequences and are shocking can also have a very humorous side. Background on the officer is given to help you to understand how he made his decisions, whether you agree with them or not. Officers are gradually educated through strange and bizarre experiences on the job that can’t be imagined. Letters from the inmates to the officer give insight to their various states of mind. You will learn of the different areas of the prison such as visiting, shakedown, dining hall, cell blocks, segregation, etc., how it all works and what goes on there that can be inspiring or downright disgusting. Many strange relationship dynamics exist like the officers best mentor being a convicted mass murderer, inmates that break their code and have his back, the institutions most feared inmate becoming his friend, corrupt officers harassing him and deliberately placing him in dangerous situations, and inmate relationships of all sorts. Nothing is embellished. Nothing need be embellished.
