Herbert Simon held that the fundamental turn in the study of bounded rationality is the turn from substantive to procedural rationality. Theories of substantive rationality begin with normative questions about attitudes: what should we prefer, intend, or believe? By contrast, theories of procedural rationality begin with normative questions about processes of inquiry: how should we determine what to prefer, intend, or believe? If Simon was right, then the central task for theories of bounded rationality is to develop an account of rational inquiry for bounded agents. We need, that is, a theory of inquiry under bounds. Inquiry Under Bounds takes as its starting point a five-point bounded rationality program inspired by recent work in cognitive science. To elaborate on and defend that program, Thorstad argues we need an account of rational inquiry for bounded agents. Inquiry under bounds develops an account of rational inquiry for bounded agents: the reason-responsiveness consequentialist view. I use this account to clarify and defend key insights from the bounded tradition as well as to shed light on recent controversies in the epistemology of inquiry.

Book Unknowability

Download or read book Unknowability written by Nicholas Rescher and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The realities of mankind's cognitive situation are such that our knowledge of the world's ways is bound to be imperfect. None the less, the theory of unknowability--agnoseology as some have called it--is a rather underdeveloped branch of philosophy. In this philosophically rich and groundbreaking work, Nicholas Rescher aims to remedy this. As the heart of the discussion is an examination of what Rescher identifies as the four prime reasons for the impracticability of cognitive access to certain facts about the world: developmental inpredictability, verificational surdity, ontological detail, and predicative vagrancy. Rescher provides a detailed and illuminating account of the role of each of these factors in limiting human knowledge, giving us an overall picture of the practical and theoretical limits to our capacity to know our world.

Book Culture and Cognition

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ronald Schleifer
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-05-15
  • ISBN : 1501746731
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Culture and Cognition written by Ronald Schleifer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book challenges the disciplinary boundaries that have traditionally separated scientific inquiry from literary inquiry. It explores scientific knowledge in three subject areas—the natural history of aging, literary narrative, and psychoanalysis. In the authors' view, the different perspectives on cognition afforded by Anglo-American cognitive science, Greimassian semiotics, and Lacanian psychoanalysis help us to redefine our very notion of culture. Part I historically situates the concepts of meaning and truth in twentieth-century semiotic theory and cognitive science. Part II contrasts the modes of Freudian case history to the general instance of Einstein's relativity theory and then sets forth a rhetoric of narrative based on the discourse of the aged. Part III examines in the context of literary studies an interdisciplinary concept of cultural cognition. Culture and Cognition will be essential reading for literary theorists, historians and philosophers of science; semioticians; and scholars and students of cultural studies, the sociology of literature, and science and literature.

Book Crafting Collaborative Research Methodologies

Download or read book Crafting Collaborative Research Methodologies written by Christina Hee Pedersen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crafting Collaborative Research Methodologies demonstrates a number of collaborative, visual and narrative methods that explore the promises and the ethical, relational complexities inherent in collaborative research. It engages with both the potentials and complexities of doing collaborative analysis and offers a medley of methods for analysis. These methods revolve around co-produced texts from Peru, Denmark and Bolivia, and involve images, memory work and practical approaches to intersectionality thinking. Through detailed explorations of the complex interweaving of issues of meaning-making, difference and the co-production of knowledges, dynamics of social exclusion and segregation become visible in the nexus between evocation and interpretation. Christina Hee Pedersen takes up the poststructuralist challenge of including researcher subjectivity as part of the analysis and, through a lively writing style, the reader is invited to engage in this analysis of the performativity of selves. This book can inspire analytical thinking for researchers and advanced students interested in expanding the rich dialogues among feminists doing poststructuralist and interdisciplinary inquiry, and for all students of qualitative and collaborative methodologies.

This book was released on 1994-08-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches professional inquiry in psychology from a perspective that integrates research and practice and prepares students for the diversity of methods employed in the field. It examines a broad range of models and methods of inquiry in both research and practice and provides a framework for linking issues of knowledge to the special context of professional psychology. Guided by a vision of psychology as a self-critical discipline and a reflective profession, Hoshmand provides a pluralistic perspective on inquiry, including alternative paradigms, for the professional education of clinical, counseling, consulting, and other practicing psychologists as reflective scientist-practitioners. She gives special attention to the cognitive development and knowledge processes of the professional and offers suggestions for professional training and mechanisms of teaching and learning.

Book Artful Collaborative Inquiry

Download or read book Artful Collaborative Inquiry written by Davina Kirkpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artful Collaborative Inquiry comprises essays created collectively by a group of scholars and artists, the majority of whom have several decades of experience of working together. The book challenges commonly-held, individualistic beliefs about ownership, authorship and scholarly and artistic ethics and practices. The essays exemplify the entangled kinds of scholarly and artistic works that emerge in a post-human world, where humans, other species, environments, things and other matters, all matter and are of equal concern in the conduct of ethical artful scholarship. Situated at the (messy) crossroads where contemporary scholarship and artistic practice converge, the seamless mo(ve)ment and interplay between text and image make up the main body of the work in this book. The chapters combine the playful use and merging of time, space and place, researcher and researched, to give a unique exemplar of research and creativity in the rapidly emerging field of collaborative scholarship. It will be of particular interest to creative and qualitative scholars wishing to conduct more artful research, and artists engaging with scholarship.
