Book Advances in Nutritional Research

Download or read book Advances in Nutritional Research written by H. Draper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the theme established in Volume 1 of providing a con spectus of the current state of knowledge on topics of active nutritional re search. It is the aim of the editors, through this series, to assist investigators in keeping abreast of developments in fields other than their own and to provide a source of reference materials for use in graduate teaching. In addition, general reviews will be published occasionally on fields of less active current research interest which have not been reviewed recently elsewhere. The quality of the contributions to Volumes 1 and 2, and of the manuscripts scheduled for publication in future volumes, gives assurance that Advances in Nutritional Research will be an asset to those engaged in research and teaching in the broad field of the nutritional sciences. vii Contents Chapter 1. Book Nutritional Aspects Of Aging

Download or read book Nutritional Aspects Of Aging written by Linda H. Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first section of Volume 2, toxicological factors affecting nutritional status are discussed. Medications and alcohol may affect nutritional status. Section 2 provides a discussion of nutrition-related diseases which occur more frequently among the elderly. Cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease are the leading causes of death in the U.S. The relative importance of cardiovascular diseases, in terms of all deaths for the given age group, rises steadily with age. The death rate from these diseases is 28% for the middle age group (35 to 44) and is 69% for the old age group (age 75 and above. This reflects the continued progression of artherosclerosis with aging. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. The death rate from cancer also rises steadily with age. The death rate from diabetes mellitus increases progressively with age and more rapidly after the age of 45. The incidence of diabetes mellitus is 0.23% under age 25 and 6.2% over 45.

Book Inorganic and Nutritional Aspects of Cancer

Download or read book Inorganic and Nutritional Aspects of Cancer written by G. Schrauzer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many decades, cancer research concentrated heavily on "or ganic" aspects of the disease and ignored the role of trace elements and minerals in carcinogenesis and tumor growth. However, in recent years, spectacular progress has been made in "inorganic" cancer research: numerous inorganic substances were shown to possess car cinogenic properties. Quite unexpectedly, certain coordination compounds of platinum were found to have powerful antineoplastic properties, and a number of essential trace elements were demon strated to have profound effects on the genesis and growth of spontaneous, induced, or transplanted tumors. It therefore appeared desirable to call upon leading authorities in the field of inorganic cancer research to present their views in a conference dedicated specifically to their discipline. But since trace elements are nor mal constituents of foods, it seemed advantageous to include nutri tional aspects into the program. The fact that diet and nutrition influence tumor growth and development has been known or suspected for a long time. However, too little research has been done in this important field, resulting in a serious retardation of knowledge. Hence, this opportunity to cover nutritional aspects of cancer was taken, even though it was clear from the beginning that this broad field could not really be treated in the available time. It was necessary, for example, to exclude entirely the vast area of nutri tion as an adjuvant in cancer therapy, and even then, further limi tation of the scope of topics to be covered had to be made.

Book Trace Metals in Health and Disease

Download or read book Trace Metals in Health and Disease written by Norman Kharasch and published by Raven Press (ID). This book was released on 1979 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The enormous amount of information accumulating recently concerning the relationship of trace metals to health and disease is comprehensively represented in a review of the 12th Symposia of the Intra-Science Research Foundation. Biophysicists, biochemists, nutritionists and pharmacologists covered such topics as the roles of metals in genetic information transfer, metals in carcinogenesis and mutagenesis and the impact of environmental metals on human health. New knowledge of the roles of zinc in pre- and neonatal development and its importance to metabolism and cell division is presented. Calcium is investigated in relation to vitamin D, calcium antagonists and verapamil. The requirements for selenium are discussed in light of the glutathione peroxidases reaction and its role in antioxidant biochemistry.

Book Biochemistry of the Essential Ultratrace Elements

Download or read book Biochemistry of the Essential Ultratrace Elements written by Earl Frieden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable development of molecular biology has had its counterpart in an impressive growth of a segment of biology that might be described as atomic biology. The past several decades have witnessed an explosive growth in our knowledge of the many elements that are essential for life and maintenance of plants and animals. These essential elements include the bulk elements (hydro gen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur), the macrominerals (sodium, potas sium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and phosphorus), and the trace elements. This last group includes the ultra trace elements and iron, zinc, and copper. Only the ultratrace elements are featured in this book. Iron has attracted so much research that two volumes are devoted to this metal-The Biochemistry of Non-Heme Iron by A. Bezkoravainy, Plenum Press, 1980, and The Biochemistry of Heme Iron (in preparation). Copper and zinc are also represented by a separate volume in this series. The present volume begins with a discussion of essentiality as applied to the elements and a survey of the entire spectrum of possible required elements.
