Book Observations on the Nodulation of Leguminous Plants of the Southwest

Download or read book Observations on the Nodulation of Leguminous Plants of the Southwest written by William Paxman Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Nodulation of Leguminous Plants of the Southwest: Regional Bulletin No. 107, Plant Study Series No. 4, November 12, 1943 Leguminous plants have been considered to be of particular importance by the soil conservationist since they may flourish in badly eroded soils where nitron gen is a limiting factor for the growth of other plants. It has often not been realized, however, that nodulation and subsequent nitrogen-fixation cannot be taken for granted in the development of a leguminous plant. The proper species of bacteria must be present in the soil to produce root nodules or must be sup plied artificially by way of inoculation. The bacteria which produce nodules on different leguminous plants are not universally distributed in the soil. Tn addition to this, it is now well known that many of the bacteria which do produce nodules are not active nitrogen fixers and may in certain instances even be parasitic on the plant. There are some leguminous plants which do not produce nodules under any circumstances. Cursory examination of many legumi nous plants in the field, extending over several years, did not show root nodules to be present and abundant in many instances. Most nodules observed did not appear to be healthy and were thinly scattered over the root system. It was consequently thought desirable to Study the nodulation of leguminous plants native to the Southwest and of certain introduced Species which are being tested out in Soil Conservation Service nurseries for possible use in this area. Book Microbes for Legume Improvement

Download or read book Microbes for Legume Improvement written by Almas Zaidi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents in-depth insights into strategies involving plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), including symbiotic/asymbiotic nitrogen fixers and associative/endophyte bacteria, phosphate-solubilizing microbes, as well as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and their active biomolecules in legume production. It also examines the latest research findings on the taxonomic status of rhizobia and signal molecules affecting rhizobia-legume symbiosis to improve readers’ understanding of the cultivation of legumes in conventional and derelict soil. The agronomically important microflora broadly discussed have offered solutions to some of the problems associated with expensive fertilizers used in many production systems. This second edition provides an overview of metal toxicity to legumes and presents strategies for the abatement of metal toxicity to legumes. Aimed at professionals, practitioners, researchers and graduate students in microbiology, crop sciences, soil microbiology, biotechnology and environmental microbiology, the book focuses on the basic concepts and practical aspects of useful soil microbiota in legume production.

  • ISBN : 9783642301193
  • Pages : 567 pages

Download or read book The Prokaryotes written by Edward F. DeLong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prokaryotes is a comprehensive, multi-authored, peer reviewed reference work on Bacteria and Achaea. This fourth edition of The Prokaryotes is organized to cover all taxonomic diversity, using the family level to delineate chapters. Different from other resources, this new Springer product includes not only taxonomy, but also prokaryotic biology and technology of taxa in a broad context. Technological aspects highlight the usefulness of prokaryotes in processes and products, including biocontrol agents and as genetics tools. The content of the expanded fourth edition is divided into two parts: Part 1 contains review chapters dealing with the most important general concepts in molecular, applied and general prokaryote biology; Part 2 describes the known properties of specific taxonomic groups. Two completely new sections have been added to Part 1: bacterial communities and human bacteriology. The bacterial communities section reflects the growing realization that studies on pure cultures of bacteria have led to an incomplete picture of the microbial world for two fundamental reasons: the vast majority of bacteria in soil, water and associated with biological tissues are currently not culturable, and that an understanding of microbial ecology requires knowledge on how different bacterial species interact with each other in their natural environment. The new section on human microbiology deals with bacteria associated with healthy humans and bacterial pathogenesis. Each of the major human diseases caused by bacteria is reviewed, from identifying the pathogens by classical clinical and non-culturing techniques to the biochemical mechanisms of the disease process. The 4th edition of The Prokaryotes is the most complete resource on the biology of prokaryotes. The following volumes are published consecutively within the 4th Edition: Prokaryotic Biology and Symbiotic Associations Prokaryotic Communities and Ecophysiology Prokaryotic Physiology and Biochemistry Applied Bacteriology and Biotechnology Human Microbiology Actinobacteria Firmicutes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria Gammaproteobacteria Deltaproteobacteria and Epsilonproteobacteria Other Major Lineages of Bacteria and the Archaea

Book Biological Nitrogen Fixation Associated with Rice Production

Download or read book Biological Nitrogen Fixation Associated with Rice Production written by Mustafizur Rahman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) has become important in rice farming systems because this process diminishes the need for expensive chemical fertilizers which have been associated with numerous health and environmental problems. The extensive exploitation of BNF would provide economic benefits to small farmers, avoiding all malign influences of chemical fertilizers. Meanwhile, advances in biotechnology have brought rice genetics to the threshold of new opportunities for increasing rice production. This volume focuses, in six different sessions, on the role of BNF in the improvement of rice production in the light of the current state of the art of BNF technology transfer and diffusion. New ideas on BNF technology in research, extension information and inoculant technology are also included, together with the socio-economic impacts of using BNF in rice farm systems.

Book Good Germs Bad Germs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jessica Snyder Sachs
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2008-09-30
  • ISBN : 1429923296
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book Good Germs Bad Germs written by Jessica Snyder Sachs and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Peace with Microbes Public sanitation and antibiotic drugs have brought about historic increases in the human life span; they have also unintentionally produced new health crises by disrupting the intimate, age-old balance between humans and the microorganisms that inhabit our bodies and our environment. As a result, antibiotic resistance now ranks among the gravest medical problems of modern times. Good Germs, Bad Germs addresses not only this issue but also what has become known as the "hygiene hypothesis"— an argument that links the over-sanitation of modern life to now-epidemic increases in immune and other disorders. In telling the story of what went terribly wrong in our war on germs, Jessica Snyder Sachs explores our emerging understanding of the symbiotic relationship between the human body and its resident microbes—which outnumber its human cells by a factor of nine to one! The book also offers a hopeful look into a future in which antibiotics will be designed and used more wisely, and beyond that, to a day when we may replace antibacterial drugs and cleansers with bacterial ones—each custom-designed for maximum health benefits.
