Whether a small-scale septic tank or a large-scale centralized wastewater treatment plant, these systems are often insufficient in accomplishing their singular purpose: cleaning water. This results in the contamination of hydrological systems. In its focus on the intersection of the natural and built environment, the practice of landscape architecture may include the design of wastewater management systems. This project demonstrates how landscape architecture principles applied to waste water management systems provides both ecological and human benefits. Goals The goal of this project is to find ways that waste water systems can be a part of green infrastructure initiatives. The project proposal demonstrates that landscapes can be multi-functional; in this case, a greenway can be a recreational amenity and provide waste water management. Scope of Work Develop a typology to inventory waste water systems Case studies research of innovative waste water treatment systems Apply knowledge to address a waste water issues in region of Cape Cod, where increased development has resulted in contamination of the hydrological system. The town of Barnstable faces the following challenges: Increased development Decrease in effectiveness of septic systems Ineffective centralized sewer system Excess nutrients in groundwater detrimental to hydrological health This approach seeks to accomplish the following: Create a public greenway Reconnect fragmented hydrological network to improve ecosystem functionality Improve resilience of public water infrastructure

Book excerpt: There are 2.4 billion people without improved sanitation and another 2.1 billion with inadequate sanitation (i.e. wastewater drains directly into surface waters), and despite improvements over the past decades, the unsafe management of fecal waste and wastewater continues to present a major risk to public health and the environment (UN, 2016). There is growing interest in low cost sanitation solutions which harness natural systems. However, it can be difficult for wastewater utility managers to understand under what conditions such nature-based solutions (NBS) might be applicable and how best to combine traditional infrastructure, for example an activated sludge treatment plant, with an NBS such as treatment wetlands. There is increasing scientific evidence that treatment systems with designs inspired by nature are highly efficient treatment technologies. The cost-effective design and implementation of ecosystems in wastewater treatment is something that exists and has the potential to be further promoted globally as both a sustainable and practical solution. This book serves as a compilation of technical references, case examples and guidance for applying nature-based solutions for treatment of domestic wastewater, and enables a wide variety of stakeholders to understand the design parameters, removal efficiencies, costs, co-benefits for both people and nature and trade-offs for consideration in their local context. Examples through case studies are from across the globe and provide practical insights into the variety of potentially applicable solutions.

Book excerpt: Water quality standards across the world are being re-written to promote healthier ecosystems, ensure safe potable water sources, increased biodiversity, and enhanced ecological functions. Treatment wetlands are used for treating a variety of pollutant waters, including municipal wastewater, agricultural and urban runoff, industrial effluents, and combined sewer overflows, among others. Treatment wetlands are particularly well-suited for sustainable water management because they can cope with variable influent loads, can be constructed of local materials, have low operations and maintenance requirements compared to other treatment technologies, and they can provide additional ecosystem services. The technology has been successfully implemented in both developed and developing countries. The first IWA Scientific and Technical Report (STR) on Wetland Technology was published in 2000. With the exponential development of the technology since then, the generation of a new STR was facilitated by the IWA Task Group on Mainstreaming Wetland Technology. This STR was conceptualized and written by leading experts in the field. The new report presents the latest technology applications within an innovative planning framework of multi-purpose wetland design. It also includes practical design information collected from over twenty years of experience from practitioners and academics, covering experiments at laboratory and pilot-scale up to full-scale applications. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to address the barriers to implementation of, the role of landscape architects in, and the potential for acceptance of constructed subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands. Landscape architects, engineers, and scientists are key players in the implementation of subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands in the landscape. Through qualitative inquiry, this research uncovers the opinions of landscape architects, engineers, and scientists regarding the potential barriers to building subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands and ways to overcome these barriers. Subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands are a decentralized form of wastewater treatment, treating wastewater onsite using little to no power (USEPA, 2000b). While centralized wastewater treatment pumps wastewater to a distant plant where it is treated (USEPA, 2004), decentralized systems treat wastewater onsite (CGBC, 2011a). Decentralized systems reduce pressure on overloaded wastewater treatment plants and create green infrastructure (Libralato et. al, 2011). Both methods return wastewater to a freshwater source. This research utilized interviews with landscape architects, engineers, and scientists about their experience with the implementation of subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands. The interviews uncovered the opinions on the limitations of using this technique as a part of onsite wastewater treatment. Emphasis was placed on the domain of landscape architecture and interactions with the public when subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands are included in designs. Interviews uncovered information regarding the need for landscape architects, engineers, and scientists to work together as a team throughout the design phase and during construction. Also, the effects of education on professionals, the public, and government in relationship to acceptance of SSF are summarized. Proposals for the reuse of wastewater for irrigation, cooling, and water features are discussed as well. Findings indicate that although many barriers to implementation exist, the most prevalent is the lack of education among the public, professionals, and government regulators regarding the availability and performance of subsurface flow wastewater treatment wetlands.
