Book Innovative Bridge Design construction Techniques to Expedite Construction

Download or read book Innovative Bridge Design construction Techniques to Expedite Construction written by Richard A. Miller (Professional engineer) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project examined various methods of innovative bridge design and construction techniques to expedite construction. The following methods have been identified as possible method of reducing the time needed for bridge construction: precast substructures; prefabricated composite bridge units; prefabricated superstructure units, such as adjacent boxes, which do not need a separate wearing surface; full depth precast concrete decks; stay-in-place concrete or steel forms; completely prefabricated bridges; and, rapid curing concrete materials. The first 6 items have been tried in various states and the results of these trials can be found in an AASHTO Technology Implementation Group (TIG) report at www.ashtotig.org. In order to find additional information on barriers to rapid construction, a survey of contractors was conducted. This survey showed that the main obstacle to fast bridge construction is the forming of the deck. The contractors also indicated that the best way to build bridges faster was to allow the entire bridge to be closed and the reconstruction to occur all at one time. One possible solution to the deck forming problem is the use of stay-in-place steel deck forms. A survey of states showed that approximately 34 states use stay-in-place steel forms for decks. The main concerns about using these forms are the inability to inspect the underside of the deck, trapping moisture between the concrete and the form, deterioration of the form, and additional weight due to the flutes in the forms. However, those states which use SIP steel forms contend that all of these concerns can be overcome. An attempt was made to assess the cost of implementation, but as most of the techniques are still in a pilot phase, cost information was not available.

Book Accelerated Bridge Construction

Book Innovative Tools and Methods Using BIM for an Efficient Renovation in Buildings

Download or read book Innovative Tools and Methods Using BIM for an Efficient Renovation in Buildings written by Bruno Daniotti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book describes a BIM-based toolkit that has been developed according to the latest research activities on building information modelling and semantic interoperability to optimize the building process. It highlights the impacts of using such new tools to fast renovation activities starting from the decision-making and design stages to the construction site management with the possibility to monitor occupants' and owners’ feedback during the realization process. In this process, a framework has been developed and implemented to allow stakeholders involved in a renovation project to efficiently compile, maintain, and add data about (i) building elements, (ii) building services systems, (iii) tenants, operators, and owners of the building, and (iv) current and predicted performance of the building from the various data sources available. The framework applies and specializes the existing practices in the Semantic Web, Linked Data, and ontology domain to the management of renovation projects. It has been designed to be open so that any system which implements the required functions and uses the specified conventions will be able to achieve semantic interoperability with other framework-compliant systems in the renovation domain. Finally, this book represents the validation process of the toolkit that has been held in three demo sites: a social housing building in Italy and two private residential buildings in Poland and Finland. The outcome shows that the toolkit facilitates the renovation process with relevant reductions of time, costs, and energy consumption and that the inhabitants can take advantage of the increase in building performances, quality, and comfort.

Book Accelerated Rigid Paving Techniques

Download or read book Accelerated Rigid Paving Techniques written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report represents nearly 6 years of collaboration among Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), State, and American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) engineers on the subject of Fastrack Concrete Paving. As an outgrowth of activities begun in 1986 in Storm Lake, Iowa, a Technical Working Group (TWG) assembled under the auspices of the FHWA's Special Project 201. Since the first meeting in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1988, the TWG has cooperated to construct pilot projects, test concrete material with the FHWA's mobile laboratory, sponsor workshops and conferences nationwide, simulate exercises on urban project designs, complete ACPA's Technical Bulletin on Fastrack, and support follow-on research. This report formally completes activities carried out under SP-201. It presents key information on opening-to-traffic criteria and pavement slab temperature management. It includes a summary of key projects built around the country in the last 6 years. It also includes a copy of ACPA's new bulletin and closes with reprints of several technical reports that may be of interest to the reader.
