Book Innovative Lock Design Report 1 Case Study New McAlpine Look Filling and Emptying System Ohio River Kentucky Hydraulic Model Investigation

Download or read book Innovative Lock Design Report 1 Case Study New McAlpine Look Filling and Emptying System Ohio River Kentucky Hydraulic Model Investigation written by Richard Stockstill and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigation improvements planned for the McAlpine Lock and Dam project on the Ohio River provided the proto-type for the laboratory model used in this study. The model was used to evaluate the in-chamber longitudinal culvert filling-and- emptying system (ILCS). In the ILCS, lock filling and emptying culverts are placed inside the lock chamber rather than in the lock walls, resulting in significant savings in lock wall construction. The ILCS also features a through-the-sill intake and discharge outlet with a longitudinal in-chamber filling-and-emptying system. Various discharge systems for the ILCS were evaluated. Construction of the filling and emptying culverts on the lock floor between the lock walls was found to be a viable design.

Book Ice and Debris Passage for Innovative Lock Designs

Download or read book Ice and Debris Passage for Innovative Lock Designs written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical and numerical models were used to assess ice and debris passage at navigation locks focusing on key factors such as the configuration of the upper approach, the design of the lock filling and emptying system and the location and design of culvert intakes and outlets. Unconventional ice passage techniques such as manifolds in the miter gates were also evaluated. Physical model results were compared to field observations and a parallel series of tests using the DynaRICE ice-hydraulic numerical model. Ice processes modeled included upper approach ice accumulation during lock filling, drawing ice into the lock chamber and flushing ice out of the lock. Initial ice thickness was found to be the most important parameter affecting ice passage. Physical and numerical model results compared reasonably well proving DynaRICE to be a useful tool for assessing ice passage for new lock designs.

Book Multiple Criteria Decision Making in the Design of Innovative Lock Walls for Barge Impact Phase 2 Implementation of Methodologies

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Decision Making in the Design of Innovative Lock Walls for Barge Impact Phase 2 Implementation of Methodologies written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop and implement a methodology for multiple-criteria tradeoff analysis supportive of lock wall design subject to extreme events. The work is the first effort for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers toward performing tradeoff analysis for lock wall design and considering very rare and severe damages such as barge impacts and earthquakes. In designing lock walls, engineers consider different levels of the extreme events for which to design (e.g., a 50-, 100-, or 500-year return-period event). In the past, lock walls may have been designed for the conservative and extreme scenario. Looking at tradeoffs among design alternatives may reasonably lower costs without sacrificing significant performance. Several criteria or metrics are identified for considering tradeoffs among different designs, including construction cost, the ratio of repair cost to reconstruction cost, repair cost, time to recover, and cost to industry. These metrics reflect the degree of severity of a barge impact or earthquake. In the methodology, three scenarios each of possible barge impacts or earthquakes are selected by a lock wall designer for evaluating the alternatives. By studying the metrics, a decision-maker can see the tradeoffs among different designs. Graphs with the cost of alternative on the vertical axis and the value of a risk metric (e.g., repair cost) on the horizontal axis show the tradeoffs among the alternatives under the extreme event scenarios. A software workbook is developed for the methodology. The implemented methodology is tested using a realistic design situation, making use of data from actual lock projects. Sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the robustness of the model results.

Book Tools for Innovation

Download or read book Tools for Innovation written by Arthur B. Markman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely known that innovation is crucial to sustain success in business, government, and engineering. But capturing the effective means of fostering innovation remains elusive. How can organizations actively promote innovation, which arises from a complex combination of cognition and domain expertise? Researchers across an array of fields are studying innovation, with exciting new findings suggesting that science is beginning to understand how it can be cultivated. It is now more important than ever for seemingly distant fields to share conclusions and, in concert, translate them into viable applications. In this unique and exciting collaboration, engineers, cognitive scientists, psychologists, computer scientists, and marketers explore the practical methods that support innovation and creative design, from different ways of thinking and conceptualizing to computer-based tools. The authors present research on processes as well as on the evaluation of existing methods. Their lessons drawn are at the forefront of the interdisciplinary movement to use science to help organizations thrive.

Book Innovations in Fishing Technology Aimed at Achieving Sustainable Fishing

Download or read book Innovations in Fishing Technology Aimed at Achieving Sustainable Fishing written by Alessandro Lucchetti and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, human exploitation of marine resources has become more efficient as the understanding of the habits and behaviour of the various species available in the sea gradually increased. Thus, technologies have developed naturally over time and fishing gears and practices have become more sophisticated. These technical advances in fishing gear have generally led to more efficient economic fishing operations and better access to resources. However, fishing implies the harvesting of marine organisms directly from their natural environment, therefore general awareness of environmental problems due to the exploitation of fishery resources has also increased. In particular, the poor selectivity of some gears is responsible for the capture of juveniles, immature and undersized specimens of many species, with negative consequences on the state of stocks. In addition, bycatch in marine fisheries is a major source of human-caused mortality of marine megafauna, often leading to the capture of vulnerable species. Finally, many bottom-towed gears are responsible for high impacts on bottom communities and habitats, with cascading consequences on the entire marine ecosystem. All these impacts can lead to changes in the structure, function and integrity of ecosystems, including effects on the food webs and multispecies predator-prey relationships.

This book was released on 2021-12-12 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this study looks at the aspect of technological innovation that firms must constantly address if they are to remain viable concerns. The chapters document key theories and ideas that have played an important role in the evolution of current understanding of how technologies change and how such changes come to be adopted by the market system; hypotheses within a specific empirical context; namely, the pacemaker industry since its commercial beginnings in 1959 until 1990; how the various dependent and independent variables are constructed; and finally the results of the empirical analysis.
