Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst France's contemporary architecture is highly regarded throughout the world, her architects have hardly been leading protagonists in the debate on ecological building. The developments featured in this book, however, should serve to correct this impression. Between 1999- 2002 Electricité de France (EDF) initiated an ambitious research programme to bring together first-class architects and innovative technologies involving renewable energy, strategies to reduce energy consumption, newly developed software programs to support ecologically oriented architectural design etc. The goal was to create sustainable and aesthetically pleasing architecture. This book documents the submissions from both established and younger architects. Amongst those included are Jacques Ferrier, Christian Hauvette, Marc Mimram and François Roche.

Download or read book Digital Heritage written by Marinos Ioannides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the Third International Euro-Mediterranean Conference (EuroMed 2010) on the historical island of Cyprus. The focal point of this conference was digital heritage, which all of us involved in the documentation of cultural heritage continually strive to implement. The excellent selection of papers published in the proceedings reflects in the best possible way the benefits of exploiting modern technological advances for the restoration, preservation and e-documentation of any kind of cultural heritage. Above all, we should always bear in mind that what we do now may be used by people in another century to repair, rebuild or conserve the buildings, monuments, artifacts and landscapes that seem important. Recent events like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, fires and insurrections show that we can never be too prepared for damage to, and loss of, the physical and, non-tangible elements of our past and, in general, our cultural heritage. To reach this ambitious goal, the topics covered included experiences in the use of innovative recording technologies and methods, and how to take best advantage of the results obtained to build up new instruments and improved methodologies for do- menting in multimedia formats, archiving in digital libraries and managing a cultural heritage. Technological advances are very often reported in detail in specialized fora. This volume of proceedings establishes bridges of communication and channels of co- eration between the various disciplines involved in cultural heritage preservation.
Download or read book Innovation and Sustainable Development written by Frieder Meyer-Krahmer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a workshop of the "Six-Countries-Programme" - the international network of political decision makers, scientists, industrialists and practitioners in innovation. It gathers papers from experts for sustainbale development and those for innovation and innovation policy to bridge the gap between these two communities and to develop mutual understanding. It shows the still very open character of the discussion about the links between innovation and sustainable development and also displays the gaps, deficiencies and necessities for completion not only in scientific analysis but also in political actions. Yet it makes clear how the concept of sustainable development can serve as guiding principle for future innovation policies and that it also offers business opportunities.

The Handbook explores the distinctiveness of sustainable innovation and concludes with suggestions for generating future research avenues that exploit the current diversity of work while seeking increased systemic insight.
Download or read book Crisis Innovation and Sustainable Development written by Blandine Laperche and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book talks about a genuine greening of the economy: from the most theoretical aspects, e.g. the genealogy of ecological economics, to the most practical. The two most prominent conclusions are, for me: this greening cannot be achieved by companies alone, but can only be the result of different kinds of innovation: technological, organizational, institutional and lifestyle changes. The changes must be implemented at all levels, from the firm to international governance.' Dominique Bourg, University of Lausanne, Switzerland 'Crisis, Innovation and Sustainable Development is a fascinating exploration at the frontiers of economics and ecology. It combines topical surveys of current work with deep reflection on the repressed role of nature in the history of economics. A work of great range and value, especially for all concerned with the strategy of economic policy going forward.' James K. Galbraith, The University of Texas at Austin, US This unique and informative book highlights the relationship between crisis, innovation, and sustainable development, and discusses the necessary conditions required to seize the ecological opportunity. The authors study the strength of change for building a new society, and the theoretical origins and political aspects of environmental concerns. They also sketch the outlines of a global governance system seeking to promote sustainable development. Written from a multidisciplinary perspective, this volume will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers in the economics of innovation, environmental economics and political economy, as well as policy makers and practitioners.

Download or read book Circular Economy Implementation for Sustainability in the Built Environment written by Cobîrzan, Nicoleta and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction sector plays an essential role in the global economy, using many exhaustible natural resources, most of which are renewable in low percentages. Moving towards a circular economy is essential because optimizing the consumption of materials and energy contributes to the development of an economic system that is independent, more competitive, and more resilient in the face of economic and social crises and various environmental factors. The current “take, make, and dispose” model of the economy is unsustainable, so a shift in thinking towards a circular economy is necessary. This circular economy is an economic model that minimizes the use of natural resources by selecting them intelligently and minimizing the use of raw materials, favoring the use of recyclable materials wherever possible while managing the resources used and maintaining and reusing them in the economic system for as long as possible. Circular Economy Implementation for Sustainability in the Built Environment emphasizes the need to implement a circular economy model in the built environment and how to create a system that optimizes the use of resources and construction materials while preserving their properties and values. Covering topics such as automobile industries, lean manufacturing, and operation strategy, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for engineers, construction managers, business leaders, urban planners, students and educators of higher education, researchers, and academicians.
