Book excerpt: Though information technology adoptions have been always referred to as innovations in firms, much of the business value literature has concentrated on the tangible and immediately measurable impacts of information technology (it) adoptions. This study aims to explore the impact of information technology investments on the innovativeness of a firm. We assess the impact of information technology as a complement to the commitment shown by firms towards innovation. We explain that the organizational commitments to innovation are of three different types--financial, managerial and temporal. We show how the availability of information technologies may help the firm leverage tangible value from the various types of commitments that it has made to innovation. Most studies in innovation are in the context of either product or process based innovations. In this study, we consider the firm as a platform where both process and product innovations happen concomitantly and consider hence capabilities of a firm that are related both types of innovation together. The results of our analyses confirm and validate the vital role played by information technology investments of a firm on its innovation characteristics and behavior. Not only does the it intensity of a firm complement the various types of commitments that a firm makes towards innovation but also plays a significant role in changing the innovation behavior of the firm. The research has both academic and managerial implications. Academically, it tries to complement both the marketing literature and information systems literature. It attempts to complement the business value of it literature by explaining the innovation value of it investments. At the same time, it also tries to position it Intensity of a firm as a key antecedent to innovation in firms in the new product development literature. The study also clarifies to the manager the conditions that facilitate and lead to effective innovations within the firm both at the process and at the product level. It also provides appropriate guidance on successful innovation strategies for the firm based on the industry it belongs to. IT has transformed, and continues to transform, all aspects of our lives: commerce and finance, education, employment, energy, health care, manufacturing, government, national security, transportation, communications, entertainment, science, and engineering. IT and its impact on the U.S. economy-both directly (the IT sector itself) and indirectly (other sectors that are powered by advances in IT)-continue to grow in size and importance. In 1995, the National Research Council's Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) produced the report Evolving the High Performance Computing and Communications Initiative to Support the Nation's Information Infrastructure. A graphic in that report, often called the "tire tracks" diagram because of its appearance, produced an extraordinary response by clearly linking government investments in academic and industry research to the ultimate creation of new information technology industries with more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Used in presentations to Congress and executive branch decision makers and discussed broadly in the research and innovation policy communities, the tire tracks figure dispelled the assumption that the commercially successful IT industry is self-sufficient, underscoring through long incubation periods of years and even decades. The figure was updated in 2002, 2003, and 2009 reports produced by the CSTB. With the support of the National Science Foundation, CSTB updated the tire tracks figure. Continuing Innovation in Information Technology includes the updated figure and a brief text based in large part on prior CSTB reports.

Much is said about the information age, the information economy, the information society, and particularly about information technology, but little about information itself. If these are important, then so is information. But information is not as other goods: it has some peculiar characteristics. It cannot be displayed for sale without giving it away in the process. Sold, it goes to the buyer but still remains with the seller. Buying entails expressing demand in ignorance for buyers who do not know just what it is that they do not know. Such characteristics have long been recognised by economists, but it is not generally economists who have most to say about the importance of information. This privilege is exercised by senior managers, who speak passionately about knowledge-based, learning organizations; by politicians and public servants, anxious to compensate with policy and programme for the information failure of organization and market; and by specialists in telecommunications and information technology, bent on adding value to what they treat as just a commodity. All are particularly enthusiastic about the innovation which springs from information. Information usually requires new information. Finding, acquiring, and mixing this new information with that already in use presents problems, not least because complex information transactions are required rather than simple information transfer. Solutions can be devised, but only by accommodating the characteristics of information. This book contrasts the way innovation is normally regarded in a variety of areas from eighteenth-century agriculture to high technology, from technology transfer to industrial espionage, from corporate strategy to patents and independent inventors with how it appears from what is termed an 'information perspective', that is one that puts information first. The results are intriguing, suggesting that radically different approaches to innovation (and organization) should be considered.
