Book China s Fintech Explosion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial technology—or fintech—is gaining in popularity globally as a way of making financial services more efficient and accessible. In rapidly developing China, fintech is taking off, catering to markets that state-owned banks and an undersized financial sector do not serve amid a backdrop of growing consumption and a large, tech-savvy millennial generation. It is becoming increasingly likely that some of China’s fintech firms will change the way the world does business. In China’s Fintech Explosion, Sara Hsu and Jianjun Li explore the transformative potential of China’s financial-technology industry, describing the risks and rewards for participants as well as the impact on consumers. They cover fintech’s many subsectors, such as digital payment systems, peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding, credit card issuance, internet banks, blockchain finance and virtual currencies, and online insurance. The book highlights the disruption of traditional banking as well as the risks of fintech and regulatory technology. Hsu and Li describe major companies including Alipay and Tencent, developer of WeChat Pay and a wealth-management business, and other leading fintech firms such as Creditease, Zhong An Insurance, and JD Finance. Offering expert analysis of market potential, risks, and competition, as well as case studies of firms and consumer behavior, China’s Fintech Explosion is a must-read for anyone interested in one of the world’s breakout sectors.

Book Complexity Perspectives in Innovation and Social Change

Download or read book Complexity Perspectives in Innovation and Social Change written by David Lane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-13 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation is nowadays a question of life and death for many of the economies of the western world. Yet, due to our generally reductionist scientific paradigm, invention and innovation are rarely studied scientifically. Most work prefers to study its context and its consequences. As a result, we are as a society, lacking the scientific tools to understand, improve or otherwise impact on the processes of invention and innovation. This book delves deeply into that topic, taking the position that the complex systems approach, with its emphasis on ‘emergence’, is better suited than our traditional approach to the phenomenon. In a collection of very coherent papers, which are the result of an EU-funded four year international research team’s effort, it addresses various aspect of the topic from different disciplinary angles. One of the main emphases is the need, in the social sciences, to move away from neo-darwinist ‘population thinking’ to ‘organization thinking’ if we want to understand social evolution. Another main emphasis is on developing a generative approach to invention and innovation, looking in detail at the contexts within which invention and innovation occur, and how these contexts impact on the chances for success or failure. Throughout, the book is infused with interesting new insights, but also presents several well-elaborated case studies that connect the ideas with a substantive body of ‘real world’ information.

Book Managing Technology Innovation

Download or read book Managing Technology Innovation written by Yunus Dauda and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology in the world today has contributed to promote organisational competitiveness and national development. But most developing countries have not substantially benefited from science and technology, hence their underdevelopment and poverty. They could not harness and manage their scientific and technological innovations and use their human and material resources to meet basic needs of their people, reduce socio-economic inequalities, create employment opportunities and improve national security. The achievement of these is considered in this book to be dependent on provisions of conducive environments for effective human resource management for scientific and technological innovations. Human resource management concepts and practices were used to evolve frameworks and processes for the generation, acquisition, adoption, and transfer of technology, depending on the objectives of different countries and organisations.

Book excerpt: Far from setting down hard and fast rules for organizational innovativeness, the authors introduce the concept of situational innovativeness recognizing that depending on the strategic objectives, conditions, and business environment companies face, managers have to be able to react accordingly, i.e. to choose a relevant combination of innovative management role-composition. Using the anecdotal form, the authors demonstrate how examined managerial traits and characteristics contribute to success, but also how certain traits carried out to excess or in an inflexible manner can signal the beginning of potential failure.

Book Ignorance Explosion

Download or read book Ignorance Explosion written by Julius Lukasiewicz and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall McLuhan once noted that We do not know who discovered water, (but) it was almost certainly not a fish. Anybody's total surround, or environment, creates a condition of non-perception. This statement has become a metaphor for what has happened in Western societies, caught as they are between states of civilization created by the industrial revolution and emerging post-industrial technology. This unveiling of our cultural condition and the seeming inability of our social sciences to recognize or influence current or future trends, presents forceful challenges to those who believe they are planning for the future of humanity. Lukasiewicz proposes that there are limits beyond which the human mind cannot comprehend its increasingly artificial, unnatural, and, in the end, dehumanized environment. Despite the grim probabilities he sees in the future, Lukasiewicz's work is, nonetheless, undergirded by a sense of optimism, and good humor informs this evocative analysis of our time.A readable, comprehensive and stimulating examination of the changing dilemmas of the human condition. Zbigniew Brzezinski Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Affairs, 1977-1981.

Book Things That Changed the Course of History The Story of the Invention of the Typewriter 150 Years Later

Download or read book Things That Changed the Course of History The Story of the Invention of the Typewriter 150 Years Later written by Hannah Sandoval and published by Atlantic Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maybe you've never used a typewriter yourself, but you've probably seen a movie set sometime in the 20th century that features a room full of them. Perhaps you've heard the distinctive clickety-clack of the machine, the loud ping when the typists get to the end of the line, and the gentle swoosh as the typists start all over again. For those of us who grew up with computers, typewriters have an undeniable fascination, but let's stop trying to think of the typewriter as something that is vintage. Let's start considering it as the amazing technological development that it was and is. To this day, keyboards follow the QWERTY format because Christopher Latham Sholes -- the inventor of the typewriter -- designed his keyboards this way. Women were able to enter the workforce with decent-paying jobs because being a typist was deemed an acceptable position for women. The industrialization of the economy was helped along by this more sophisticated device. Not only is the typewriter the direct predecessor of the computer, which has completely changed the way we communicate, but it's also a charming machine in its own right, with its clickety-clack, ping, and swoosh. Experience the story of the invention of the typewriter with help from our featured guests: Linda Deutsch, famed former Associated Press reporter; Dorothy Portnoy, long-time typing teacher in Manhattan, and Steven Hausman, technology consultant and former Deputy Director for the National Institute of Health.-- (10/19/2016 12:00:00 AM)

Book Global Events and Event Stratigraphy in the Phanerozoic

Download or read book Global Events and Event Stratigraphy in the Phanerozoic written by Otto H. Walliser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of rapid and even catastrophic turnovers within the Phanerozoic ecosystems has been discussed controversially for more than 170 years. Since 1980 this discussion has become even more intensive after the hypothesis of Alvarez, explaining the end-Cretaceous mass extinction as the result of a huge asteroid impact on the Earth. This theory stimulated several thousand papers and is still controversial. The international research programme on "Global Biological Events in Earth History" attempts to bring the discussion back to the facts by using multidisciplinary investigations of the major Phanerozoic events. The results of an international group of experts are presented giving a wealth of information and a thorough discussion of the causes of the various global events.
