Book Innovation and Transfer of U S Air Force Manufacturing Technology

Download or read book Innovation and Transfer of U S Air Force Manufacturing Technology written by Assembly of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1981-02-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air force sponsorship of manufacturing technology projects is often based on the hope that the results will not only benefit the original contractors, but also will be transferred to other Air Force contractors. While some innovations are readily adopted, others are rejected for a variety of reasons. An understanding of those reasons and the process by which investment decisions are made will enable the Air Force to establish policies and procedures to enhance the likelihood of successful technology transfer to its competitors. As manufacturing systems become more complex and more integrated, transfers of hardware/software combinations will be increasingly common. Innovation and Transfer of the U.S. Air Force Manufacturing Technology examines three instances involving manufacturing research and development projects completed under contract to the Air Force to explain why attempted transfers of military sponsored manufacturing technology succeed or fail. The report presents a model based on these three case studies which describes the decision-making process used by potential adopters of innovations. Based on the case studies, Innovation and Transfer of the U.S. Air Force Manufacturing Technology suggests that more attention be directed towards the characteristics of the technologies, as well as to the aspects of transferring organizations. It proposes changes in contracting procedures to increase the diffusion of such technology and recommends that one or more case studies be conducted on the transfer of manufacturing systems that involve such hardware/software combinations.

Book The Role of Experimentation Campaigns in the Air Force Innovation Life Cycle

Download or read book The Role of Experimentation Campaigns in the Air Force Innovation Life Cycle written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Force (USAF) has continuously sought to improve the speed with which it develops new capabilities to accomplish its various missions in air, space, and cyberspace. Historically, innovation has been a key part of USAF strategy, and operating within an adversary's OODA loop (observe, orient, decide, act) is part of Air Force DNA. This includes the ability to deploy technological innovations faster than do our adversaries. The Air Force faces adversaries with the potential to operate within the USAF's OODA loop, and some of these adversaries are already deploying innovations faster than the USAF. The Role of Experimentation Campaigns in the Air Force Innovation Life Cycle examines the current state of innovation and experimentation in the Air Force and best practices in innovation and experimentation in industry and other government agencies. This report also explores organizational changes needed to eliminate the barriers that deter innovation and experimentation and makes recommendations for the successful implementation of robust innovation and experimentation by the Air Force.

Book Improving the USAF Technology Transfer Process

Download or read book Improving the USAF Technology Transfer Process written by William C. Martel and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1991 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer of technology is an integral part of many U.S. Air Force (USAF) security assistance programs that train and equip foreign military forces. The USAF comments on security assistance programs proposed by the other services and advises policymakers on commercial sales of weapons systems and dual-use technologies. It also engages in cooperative research-and-development projects with other nations. Some observers in the USAF believe that it has little influence on the technology transfer process and that its concerns are routinely ignored. This Note presents ideas for increasing both the external persuasiveness and internal efficiency of the USAF in technology transfer cases. They include suggestions for ways to (1) reduce delays in the coordination process, (2) remove inhibitions on dissent, (3) anticipate broader concerns, (4) identify controversial cases, (5) secure adequate information, and (6) reorganize the Internal Programs Directorate.

Book Accelerating United States Air Force Operationalization of Additive Manufacturing Through Public private Partnerships

Download or read book Accelerating United States Air Force Operationalization of Additive Manufacturing Through Public private Partnerships written by Dominic P. Clementz and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Air Force logistics, engineering, and sustainment community frequently receives criticism for its bureaucratic, outdated, costly, and inflexible maintenance, repair, and overhaul processes. The rise of additive manufacturing technologies across the aerospace industry provides significant opportunities to rejuvenate the Air Force supply chain and drastically increase readiness and lethality. However, several challenges are negatively impacting the Service's ability to capitalize on additive manufacturing. In order to harness the benefits of additive manufacturing the USAF must address three significant barriers--Cultural Change, Workforce Development, and Data Management--through active participation in public-private partnerships. The Air Force must nurture a cultural environment which rewards innovation, calculated risk taking, and horizontal collaboration. It also needs to provide additive manufacturing education and training to its workforce to facilitate understanding and development of new processes to capitalize on emerging digital manufacturing technologies. Furthermore, the Air Force must closely coordinate with key stakeholders to ensure effective digital data management practices and security. The USAF's active participation in public-private partnerships offers the best opportunity to rapidly modernize antiquated sustainment processes because engagement in public-private partnerships promotes lateral coordination and communication between key stakeholders; enables formal and informal education and training; and provides a structured, trusted forum to discuss and solve digital data management issues. The USAF must doubledown on its active participation in public-private partnerships in order to overcome the barriers preventing the USAF from more rapidly adopting and operationalizing these emerging technologies across the organic logistics and sustainment supply chain."--Abstract.
