Estamos en un escenario con una lógica dual, que se manifiesta en la coexistencia de territorios rurales que declinan y territorios que experimentan una dinámica de crecimiento asociado a procesos globales de valorización de actividades y recursos. No obstante, actualmente se observa en ambos continentes procesos de innovación que presagian la transición hacia escenarios de desarrollo rural más sustentables. Nuevas iniciativas que ponen en valor el patrimonio biocultural del mundo rural en un contexto de pluriactividad y de nuevos diálogos rural-urbanos emergen como posibilidades para el desarrollo y el renacimiento rural, aun en espacios históricamente postergados. En este libro se reflexiona sobre los procesos de innovación presentes en el mundo rural actual y sobre una posible agenda para consolidarlos, de modo que dejen de ser simples casos especiales o productos de nicho, para transformarse en vectores de un cambio de rumbo en el desarrollo rural. Esta reflexión se sustenta en el análisis de numerosas experiencias de innovación en la mejora del hábitat y el ambiente, en la innovación productiva y de generación de nuevas actividades y empleos, y en la innovación en torno a la promoción y gobernanza del desarrollo. Este libro es producto de un trabajo compartido entre investigadores, académicos y promotores del desarrollo involucrados en el Proyecto EARTH (Education, Agriculture and Resources for Territories and Heritage) financiado por el Programa ERASMUS + de la Unión Europea.

At the same time, the reviews and discussions included are used by the authors as starting points to draw conclusions and propose a theory of socio-ecological transformations. The theoretical and methodological innovations of this book include a distinction of two types of metabolic processes: tangible and intangible; the analysis of the social metabolism at different scales (in space and time) and a theory of socio-ecological change overcoming the merely “systemic” or “cybernetic” nature of conventional approaches, giving special protagonism to collective action.
