Book excerpt: This report summarizes the proceedings of UNICEF's Global Innocenti Seminar on "Achieving Gender Equality in Families: The Role of Males." The seminar examined how, as more women become economic providers for families, the role of males in families needs to develop new dimensions so that they can contribute to improved health and education of children, to making women's roles more equitable, and to increasing stability of families. Seminar topics included the following: (1) "Introduction: The Importance of Men in Achieving Gender Equality in Families," stressing the inadequacy of an exclusive focus on women; (2) "The Ongoing Struggle to Define Gender Equality," pointing out historical reasons that gender policy has focused on women; (3) "Gender Roles: How Do They Affect the Child?"; (4) "Social Change and the Loss of the Traditional Family"; (5)"The 'New Man': Male Caretakers and Gender Equality"; (6) "Family Life Cycles: Family, School and Adolescence"; (7) "The Media as Socializer of Gender Roles," detailing the pervasive and demeaning nature of the media; (8) "The Challenge of Programming for Gender Equality: How To Involve Males"; (9) "What Can UNICEF and Others Do?"; and (10) "Recommendations," including suggestions to focus more analysis on the roles of males, developing a life cycle approach for boys as well as girls, and adapting existing policy on gender. A writeup "Incorporating the Role of Fathers in the Situation Analysis: Cape Verde," sample workplans, and a five-item suggested reading list are included in the Appendices. (BGC)

This book was released on 1993 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main recommendations of the seminar on street and working children held during February 15-25, 1993, in Florence are: special efforts must be made to document the situation of the "invisible" working children ; a multidisciplinary, multisectoral approach should be adopted ; both family- and community-based activities are needed ; gender must be considered in all situation analyses and program and project interventions ; health actions as well as education can be important entry points for comprehensive programs ; primary health care delivered to children living on the streets is an important, noninstitutional approach ; mechanisms to reinforce collaboration at the international and national level between UNICEF, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and nongovernmental organizations are needed ; policy development, planning, and programming as well as advocacy need to be advanced under the umbrella of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child ; child labor and the status of laws and law enforcement concerning child labor need constant review and advocacy by all partners within an international framework ; activities to promote public awareness concerning the realities of child exploitation are needed via the media and by other means ; children need to be involved in all stages of the analytical and programmatic process ; and a grand alliance of partners working for group and individual rights is needed to work on behalf of working children.

Download or read book Lost Kids written by Mona Gleason and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and youth occupy important social and political roles, even as they sleep in cribs or hang out on street corners. Conceptualized as either harbingers or saboteurs of a bright, secure tomorrow, they have motivated many adult-driven schemes to effect a positive future. But have all children benefited from these programs and initiatives? Lost Kids examines adults' misgivings about, and the inadequate care of, vulnerable children. From explorations of interracial adoption and the treatment of children with disabilities to discussions of the cultural construction of the hopeless child, this multifaceted collection rejects the essentialism of the "priceless child" or "lost youth" simplistic categories that continue to shape the treatment of those who deviate from the so-called norm.

This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a commentary on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 20 November 1989. Part One contains a general introduction to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and deals with matters such as the drafting history, the contents, direct application, horizontal effects, limitations, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, and the Convention's final provisions. Part Two contains an article-by-article commentary, the aim of which is not to give an interpretation of the precise nature and scope of States parties' obligations but, rather, to identify the materials, or sources, which provide guidance in that regard. In the identification of such materials, attention has been paid to the general rules of treaty interpretation, as set forth in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
Download or read book Pedagogy of Empowerment written by Malak Zaalouk and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study weaves anthropological detail with hard facts and analysis as it takes the reader to visit the community schools of Upper Egypt. It offers a historical understanding of the initiative whilst carefully embedding it in the political and economic global context of the late twentieth century. The author first introduces the movement approach to development and carefully develops the notion of learning as a countermovement to the disintegrating world of today. She then moves on to describe how a community schools movement developed in the most deprived areas of rural Egypt and how such a movement is planned, mobilized and sustained and details the strategies and activities of the initiative. In the third part of the work the author describes the impact of the movement on people's lives. The last chapter places the community education movement within the political economy of Egypt's educational reform and attempts to forecast the movement's long-term impact on the educational system. The work will be of interest to anthropologists, educationalists, feminists, practitioners working in the field of development, and policymakers.

Download or read book Children Noble Causes Or Worthy Citizens written by Karl Eric Knutsson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the International Year of the Child in 1979, advocacy for children has intensified. The Convention on the Rights of the Child has propelled this advocacy decisively into the midst of the political debate over human rights. Attempts to construct and support the theoretical and empirical underpinnings for a fresh approach to children and childhood are also intensifying. Nonetheless, policies targeted at children continue to suffer from pervasive theoretical weaknesses. This is persistently constraining appropriate action. This book argues that for both theoretical and practical reasons children need to be understood in their own right. It asks fundamental questions about the perceptions we have of children and childhood and about the ways these perceptions emerge to influence and shape our assumptions, preferences and choices concerning children. It tries to deepen understanding and interest by clarifying the theoretical, ethical and pragmatic reasons for transforming the political neglect of children into recognition and action. The book is divided into two parts. The first part examines cultural and social variations in perceptions concerning children and the second part draws conclusions from the analysis. It concludes by proposing practical lessons which may be learned from the debate about children.

Book excerpt: This brief studies the phenomenon of street children in two cities in Peru. It looks at some of the conceptual issues and, after analysing why children are in the street and what behaviour and which aspirations they exhibit, deals with the policy issues and lessons to be learned. This brief investigates when and why the transition from children on the street (street-working children) to children of the street (street living children) takes place and elucidates how they survive. It explains the fluidity and the risks involved in any type of child street life.

Download or read book Cities for Children written by Sheridan Bartlett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban authorities and organizations are responsible for providing the basic services that affect the lives of urban children. Cities for Children is intended to help them understand and respond to the rights and requirements of children and adolescents. It looks at the responsibilities that authorities face, and discusses practical measures for meeting their obligations in the context of limited resources and multiple demands. While the book emphasizes the challenges faced by local government, it also contains information that would be useful to any groups working to make urban areas better places for children. Cities for Children begins by introducing the concept, history and content of children's rights and the obligations they create for local authorities. The volume then goes on to look at a variety of contentious issues such as housing, community participation, working children, community health, education and juvenile justice. The final section of the book discusses the challenge of establishing systems of governance that can promote the economic security, social justice and environmental care essential for the realization of children's rights. It follows through the practical implications for the structure, policies and practices of local authorities. Written by the top experts in the field of children's issues, and including a resource section which lists publications and organizations that can provide further information and support, this volume is a must for all involved in planning for, and the protection of, children within the urban environment.

Download or read book Development Anthropology written by Hari Mohan Mathur and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Development Anthropology: Putting Culture First, Hari Mohan Mathur highlights the role of culture—and anthropological work more broadly—in development outcomes. Anthropologists’ contributions in this area have traditionally received little attention, but this changed when the World Bank released the 2015 World Development Report. This report focused on the social, cultural, and psychological influences which affect the development process, and like Mathur, stressed the criticality of anthropological and other social sciences’ knowledge for the success of development efforts. A major contribution to development anthropology, this book will interest anthropologists, economists, sociologists, other social scientists, policy makers, planners, development practitioners, researchers and trainers, and will be particularly useful for graduate students planning their career in the field of development.
