Book Parking and the City

Download or read book Parking and the City written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Shoup brilliantly overcame the challenge of writing about parking without being boring in his iconoclastic 800-page book The High Cost of Free Parking. Easy to read and often entertaining, the book showed that city parking policies subsidize cars, encourage sprawl, degrade urban design, prohibit walkability, damage the economy, raise housing costs, and penalize people who cannot afford or choose not to own a car. Using careful analysis and creative thinking, Shoup recommended three parking reforms: (1) remove off-street parking requirements, (2) charge the right prices for on-street parking, and (3) spend the meter revenue to improve public services on the metered streets. Parking and the City reports on the progress that cities have made in adopting these three reforms. The successful outcomes provide convincing evidence that Shoup’s policy proposals are not theoretical and idealistic but instead are practical and realistic. The good news about our decades of bad planning for parking is that the damage we have done will be far cheaper to repair than to ignore. The 51 chapters by 46 authors in Parking and the City show how reforming our misguided and wrongheaded parking policies can do a world of good. Book Parking and Competition for Space in Urban Neighborhoods Residents Perceptions of Traffic and Parking related Conflicts

Download or read book Parking and Competition for Space in Urban Neighborhoods Residents Perceptions of Traffic and Parking related Conflicts written by Franziska Kirschner and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infrastructure for parking and parked cars themselves (e.g., parked cars blocking bike lanes and sidewalks or the visibility range) can lead to conflicts for pedestrians and cyclists. The perception of conflicts could discourage walking and cycling in neighborhoods and undermine municipalities' efforts to provide more sustainable urban mobility. The aim of this study was therefore to analyze the effect of on-street car parking in urban neighborhoods on perceived parking and traffic-related conflicts. In addition, it examines in what way the intention to reduce one's car use influences the perception of the conflicts (Stage Model of Self-Regulated Behavior Change (SSBC)). A household survey was conducted in the inner-city neighborhood of Frankfurt-Bornheim, Germany (N=1027). The residents most often observed the conflicts in which parked cars impeded walking and cycling as well as situations in which pedestrians felt threatened by cyclists biking on the sidewalk. Results from multiple linear regression models revealed that the influencing factors for the perception of conflicts were the use of different means of transportation and the intention to change one's behavior (SSBC model) to reduce car use rather than car ownership. In addition, a resident's age and household structure seemed to affect awareness of conflicts in which pedestrians and cyclists were involved. The results suggest a group-serving bias, meaning that the residents mostly observed those conflicts that they did not cause. A separate infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists could help prevent most of the conflicts described in this study.

Book Parking an International Perspective

Download or read book Parking an International Perspective written by Dominic Stead and published by . This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most parking research to date has been conducted in Western countries. Parking: An International Perspective is different. Taking a planetary view of urbanism, this book examines parking policies in 12 cities on five continents: Auckland, Bangkok, Doha, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Nairobi, Rotterdam, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Shenzhen, Singapore, and Tokyo. Chapters are similarly structured, and contain detailed information about the current parking strategies and issues in these cities. The discussion of parking is placed in the context of transport, mobility, land-use, society, technology, and planning in each of these cities Features structured case studies focused on summarizing current and emerging trends in parking policy and practice in cities around the world Provides a systematic comparison of parking issues and approaches across a variety of situational and cultural contexts - examining each city's transport modes, social trends, land use, technology and planning policies Offers a bridge between transport planning research and practice related to the latest trends in parking and parking space re-use

Book Adaptive Reuse for Urban Food Provision

Download or read book Adaptive Reuse for Urban Food Provision written by Monika Szopińska-Mularz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the adaptive reuse potential of inner-city modern movement car parking structures for controlled environment agriculture systems and the contribution of such a transformation to urban development. Modern movement garages built over the last 60 years are becoming redundant due to changing mobility trends and growing environmental awareness. Adaptive reuse is one of the scenarios that can reconcile these megastructures with contemporary urban needs. The novel function proposed in this study for multi-storey garages is controlled environment agriculture, which is a food production technique that is now developing in cities as an innovative business and a secondary food source. First, the study focuses on the theory of repurposing existing buildings for food production, which is then summarised in the form of a guide for the analysis of the adaptive reuse potential of inner-city car parking structures for controlled environment agriculture. Second, the guide is applied to two case studies, which allows exploring their potential to accommodate urban farming from planning, architectural, and environmental perspectives. The book aims to inspire and support decision-makers, architects, scholars and students when elaborating novel solutions for repurposing buildings for alternative functions. The publication encourages treating existing building stock as a resource that can become a stimulus for the new design process, which improves urban food provision.
