Book Inland Waterways of the Netherlands

Download or read book Inland Waterways of the Netherlands written by Louise Busby and published by Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 6,000km of navigable waterways, the Netherlands offers one of the most extensive yet compact cruising grounds in Europe. This book is a user's guide to the whole network, covering all the mast-up routes and excluding only those waterways which offer less than 3.5m bridge height. Navigational details are provided for each waterway, comprising dimensions and obstacles to be expected, including service arrangements for bridges and locks. This is followed by details of over 300 stopping places across all 12 provinces; some which are large or popular harbours, and others which are well off the beaten track. Comments on the significant features are expanded for nearly 100 'principal venues' where more details on things to do and see are provided, as well as information on practical facilities ashore and the authors' selective and subjective restaurant tips! The book is designed to be of interest to all crew members, not just the skipper or navigator, whether its to establish how to approach a place, or to discover what to do or see of interest on arrival. Easy to browse, the book's illustrations have been selected to give a flavour of this water-loving country as well as to prepare the visiting yachtsman, whether under power or sail. This second edition has been updated with amendments to the text and maps. There are also many new photos by the authors. Louise Busby's interest in boating has led to commissions for Motor Boats Monthly as well as the Cruising Association's magazine. She is a former CA regional Almanac editor for the Netherlands and Belgium.David Broad is a detailed journal writer and log keeper, many of David's notes and sketches have been used in the compilation of this book. He is a Council member of the Cruising Association and the Chairman of the Broom Owners Club. A website, which is a useful annexe to the book, is kept up to date with details of changes to the waterways along with useful links to further information. Book Bio optical Modeling and Remote Sensing of Inland Waters

Download or read book Bio optical Modeling and Remote Sensing of Inland Waters written by Deepak R. Mishra and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bio-optical Modeling and Remote Sensing of Inland Waters presents the latest developments, state-of-the-art, and future perspectives of bio-optical modeling for each optically active component of inland waters, providing a broad range of applications of water quality monitoring using remote sensing. Rather than discussing optical radiometry theories, the authors explore the applications of these theories to inland aquatic environments. The book not only covers applications, but also discusses new possibilities, making the bio-optical theories operational, a concept that is of great interest to both government and private sector organizations. In addition, it addresses not only the physical theory that makes bio-optical modeling possible, but also the implementation and applications of bio-optical modeling in inland waters. Early chapters introduce the concepts of bio-optical modeling and the classification of bio-optical models and satellite capabilities both in existence and in development. Later chapters target specific optically active components (OACs) for inland waters and present the current status and future direction of bio-optical modeling for the OACs. Concluding sections provide an overview of a governance strategy for global monitoring of inland waters based on earth observation and bio-optical modeling. Presents comprehensive chapters that each target a different optically active component of inland waters Contains contributions from respected and active professionals in the field Presents applications of bio-optical modeling theories that are applicable to researchers, professionals, and government agencies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Inland Waterways: Their Relation to Railway Transportation and to the National Welfare; Their Creation, Restoration and Maintenance; With 80 Illustrations and a Map The disappearance of commerce from our water ways seemed like a striking instance of the death of the unfit in the struggle for commercial existence. The experience of other nations shows that this is not so. Fitness to live for human service is quite another matter from fitness to survive in the contests of the jungle. We fit the earth for use by determining what organisms shall survive. We must so bend the ener gies of the agencies of land transportation as to allow the waterway to live as a tool of trade, to the benefit of the whole nation, including the railways. Having found the way by which the railways may be prevented from killing water-borne traffic, we must make our waterways fit for their work. Traffic will follow even the shallow river or canal, if protected from uneconomic competition, but it is wasteful to compel trade to follow the water unless those facilities are provided which are necessary to make water traffic economical. A first requisite of cheap water transport is depth of water. The great trunk lines of traffic, like the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, the Ohio, the Missouri, the Columbia, and the Tennessee must be given depths in proportion to their functions. The Mississippi must be made a loop of the sea, and given connection with Lake Michigan as our part of the continental back water of which Canada will build her part, and thus gain the whip-hand over us if we do not build ours. But most of our waterways must in the nature of the case be rather shallow, and our problems with them are to be found in matters of terminals and the types of vessels.
