Book Inland Waterway Transport

Download or read book Inland Waterway Transport written by Bart Wiegmans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland waterways are a host for a mode of transport that is not as visible to the general public or as used as it once was. It is, however, generally perceived to be very important to our freight transport system today, although a closer look into the inland waterway transport system rebuts this perception and reveals the strengths and opportunities of this mode of transportation. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of the current role of inland waterway transport as a freight transport system and its conditions. Drawing on case studies from across Europe, this text explores the economic, logistic, and technological and policy issues related to inland waterway transport and the challenges that changes in these areas present to this transport mode. It also explores the strategies for the inland waterway transport sector to secure and then enlarge its role in the future of freight transport. Inland Waterway Transport will be an invaluable source for students and researchers of transport studies. In addition, the book will be useful to policymakers and practitioners involved in its development. It may also appeal to wider readers with an interest in the fascinating business of inland waterway transport.

Book Mathematical Modeling of Inland Vessel Maneuverability Considering Rudder Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Mathematical Modeling of Inland Vessel Maneuverability Considering Rudder Hydrodynamics written by Jialun Liu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that different rudder configurations have different hydrodynamic characteristics, which are influenced by the profile, the parameters, and the specific configuration. The author proposes new regression formulas to help naval architects quickly estimate the rudder-induced forces and moments in maneuvering. Furthermore, the author proposes and validates an integrated maneuvering model for both seagoing ships and inland vessels. Using the proposed regression formulas and maneuvering model, the specific impacts of rudder configurations on inland vessel maneuverability are studied. In turn, the book demonstrates the application of Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations to obtain rudder hydrodynamic characteristics, and the integration of the RANS results into maneuvering models as an accurate estimation of rudder forces and moments needed to quantify the impacts of rudder configurations on ships’ maneuvering performance. In addition, the author proposes new criteria for the prediction and evaluation of inland vessel maneuverability. Simulations of ships with various rudder configurations are presented, in order to analyze the impacts of rudder configurations on ship maneuverability in different classic and proposed test maneuvers. Offering essential guidance on the effects of rudders for inland vessel maneuverability, and helping practical engineers make informed design choices, the book is of interest to researchers and academics in the field of naval engineering, as well as students of naval architecture. Industrial practitioners working on ship design may also find it beneficial.

Book The Inland Steel Fleet 1911 1998

Download or read book The Inland Steel Fleet 1911 1998 written by Raymond A. Bawal Jr. and published by Inland Expressions. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly ninety years, lake freighters belonging to the Inland Steel fleet transported the raw materials necessary for the manufacture of steel at their owner’s sprawling industrial complex at Indiana Harbor, Indiana. Easily distinguishable from vessels operated by other shipping companies following the incorporation of a unique color scheme in 1950, the members of the Inland Steel fleet became some of the most recognizable and popular ships to ever sail the waters of the Great Lakes. This volume traces the history of this fleet from its formation, through an era of expansion that included the construction of two groundbreaking vessels and the rebuilding of its older units, to its demise following the sale of the Inland Steel Company in 1998. In addition, complete factual accounts chronicle the careers of each of the ten vessels that served in this fleet over its long history.
